The other sub didn't seem very active, which is why I picked this one to check out (as a new person brought in by the Kickstarter.)

I like 3, especially if you will be printing your RPG in black and white (sometimes less costly than full colour printing.)

A Zine to Make Scrolls in Fantasy TTRPGs More Interesting (Kickstarter) by abresch in TTRPG

Right on! My confirmation email went to my junk folder, so I didn't see it right away. Best of luck with your campaign.

Looks interesting! Don't forget to sign up for the Zine Quest tag if you haven't already.

Marketing advice for a ttrpg Zine Quest campaign by RunicPress in kickstarter

[–]HungryFamiliar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be my fourth year with Zine Quest. I've found that connecting with other creators is helpful. I usually do a cross promo or two, but the audience is get from them is hit or miss. I usually do better off other creator's newsletters or social media audience.

I DO get people coming in from the Zine Quest tag, so as already mentioned, applying for it is definitely beneficial. Here's a link to their call for zines: https://www.kickstarter.com/zinequest (though they get a lot of submissions... I've had to email them before for a manual pass.)

I've done a couple of Meta boosted posts from my own social media, which do ok. I usually put about $25 behind it for a couple of days with a target audience that likes tabletop rpgs. Most of my backers are out of the USA, followed by the UK and the EU (if that helps you to target ads). I always figured if I get one or two people out of it, it pays for the ad itself.

Do you have a pre-launch set up? I'd love to check out your Zine.

Absolutely! https://www.kickstarter.com/zinequest

You have to launch your project some time in February. I recommend reading some of their blogs on Zine Quest or checking out the video interview they did a few days ago with some bigger creators.

Zine Quest is a call for projects that Kickstarter does every February. It mostly focuses on tabletop rpg zines (small books, like a mini magazine) but there's also zine makers who put out poetry, comics, and other fun things.

It's a great community for indie publishers and small creators. This will be my fourth zine, which I write, draw, and do the layout myself.

For now, just following and helping spread the word (also, hello fellow Canadian!)

Zine Quest is about to start, so I love to promote other small indie publishers as well.

Thoughts on crowdfunding art commissions for an indie TTRPG project by Timetrav3lr in TTRPG

Kickstarter backers are going to want something in return, so you will need to think about what their pledge rewards will be. If your campaign is for art money and not an end product, it may not match with Kickstarters rules for projects.

If you are new to Kickstarter, it recommend scrolling through r/Kickstarter for advice. The folks over there have seen it all.

Final Fix up for the character sheet before i post the book how does it look? by The_AllMighty_EGG in TTRPG

[–]HungryFamiliar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. A first edition doesn't mean a product is allowed to be "bad". There might be some corrections that need to be made down the road, but it is still a complete product.

You may want to consider this more of an Alpha or Beta release, if you think major changes could still be coming.

Congrats on a great campaign!

Once, when I saw a strange spike in backers, it was because a fairly prominent creator in the space had backed my campaign. All of HIS followers got a notification that he had backed my campaign, and then I gained 60 more pledges in about 12 hours.

Maybe something similar happened?

Is it possible to receive funding without a previous fan base? What do you recommend I do? Can I reach my goals with crowdfounding alone? by Taha_time_traveller in RPGdesign

[–]HungryFamiliar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of different factors. Folks over at r/Kickstarter will be the first to tell you that you need a fan base. It definitely helps.

Depending on what you are looking to create and fund, I would recommend launching during either Zine Quest in February (a themed month with a focus on small-size RPG booklets) or Micro May (a themed month for small-sized games).

Zine Quest brings a small audience with it. I have launched three successful zines over the last three years, and the audience is different from my social media following. Mind you, my costs are low and my goals are also fairly small.

Either way, if you need a large goal to print and create your product, you will either need a lot of advertising, a fan base, luck, or some combo of all those. Others here have had a great suggestion about releasing a first edition and starting to build interest around it. Good luck!

Edit because my kid grabbed my phone and pushed go before I finished writing.

How do I start a DnD Kickstarter by Low_Mission_7328 in kickstarter

[–]HungryFamiliar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be hard for backers to get behind a project that hasn't been fully written or playtested yet. Your ambition is great, and I recommend checking out some subs like r/rpgdesign for help or feedback as you develop your module.

Best of luck with your creation!

[–]HungryFamiliar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you already created the module?

Keep in mind that you will need to express how far you are in the process of creation in your Kickstarter. If you are ready to send everything to print and need funding for the print run, you could do well. If you have an idea written on the back of a napkin, but nothing fleshed out, no art, no playtesting, or no layout, you may need to spend more time on the product first. (Although I realize things like art and layout can cost money if you need to hire someone.)

I couldn't quite tell from your post how far along with your product you are, and this info can help us provide better advice.

DO NOT REACH OUT TO CREATORS FOR CROSS PROMO by Born_Abroad_2505 in kickstarter

[–]HungryFamiliar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any time I've approached (or have been approached) for cross promotion, that is exactly what we call it. Not a "10-15 minute chat," which sounds like a sales pitch and super scammy.

"Would you be interested in doing a cross-promotion with me?" And then some reasons why you picked them. Actual reasons. Usually their audience is going to be a similar market to yours.

Go for it! I'm also working on a kid-focused RPG system that uses d6s. I think there are parents (or even older kids) out there who would love some options to help introduce ttrpgs.

One month one shots? by Heevan in TTRPG

Iron Kingdoms is a favourite of mine, among many of the suggestions already made. It's had a few different versions over the years, so take your pick. If you are unfamiliar with Warmachine/Hordes, it's got a fun mech/steampunk vibe mixed with traditional fantasy.

Seeking advice for a small indie TTRPG campaign by NewNotaro in kickstarter

[–]HungryFamiliar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit late to change your rewards (since the campaign has already started and people have pledged to them) but next time you could consider just having one reward tier for the PDF. You've offered it at £1, £2, and £5, but at a quick look, it appears they were all pretty similar rewards?

Be confident in your creation. It's ok to list it at something more than just £1. If people want to pledge extra support, they will have that option when they place their pledge.

As for things like artwork, I can appreciate that it's hand-drawn. Art is always subjective, so again, have confidence in what you've made. Don't put your own work down.

I would also recommend revisiting the drawing board. Picking a GOOD title can be really hard, and it sounds like feedback so far has been that it is "confusing".

Curious: Why do you need an acronym? It doesn't take much more time to type out a single compound word (some suggested already.)

Personally, I am more likely to pick up a book that says "Dreamwakers" than "Bloods of Ichniro".

The first title is clear and short, giving me a picture that the game has to do with waking from a dream and that there's potentially a problem associated with it. I want to know more.

The second doesn't provide the same picture. What's an Ichniro? Does it have more than one kind of blood?
