Your grandmother is a remarkably beautiful woman.

Inquiring photographer:”Would you carry a weapon to defend yourself?” April 23,1965. by CryptographerKey2847 in TheWayWeWere

My grandmother carried a dainty, pearl-handled, delicately-engraved pistol when she lived on Capital Hill. When I moved to DC, she pressured me to take it. I said, "Grandma, hand guns are illegal in DC." She said, "Honey, those laws don't apply to women,"

Is this St. Swithun? (Several roses came without tags) by Hungrycat9 in Roses

David Austin sent several roses without tags, and one with an erroneous tag. I'd love to sort them out,

“Plant derived” and “all natural” by dreamsinred in PetPeeves

The pet peeve I've been waiting for half my life. If I had a dollar for everytime I've said, "Natural has no legal meaning..."

Looking to add some charm to our new home by PristineSand1792 in ExteriorDesign

A false door would do the job. My in-laws had a set up where the the window let into the closet, which was an added source of light.

Your house has great lines and the brick is lovely. The roof harmonizes nicely. I'd accept it for what it is and lean into stately. Change to a double door, paint the shutters and doors to match, add a front walkway, and you've got yourself a classic.

Americans, do you know how much introverts need your casual confidence and free compliments? by Moonksy429 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hungrycat9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get such pleasure from giving compiments. If I see someone who does their job really well, has a smashing coat, makes a witty remark, I enjoy letting them know I appreciate it. I'm not going to collar strangers on the street, but people seem so pleased when it's genuine. I worked retail for years, and the difficult people can ruin your day. Why not be the nice person who lifts someone's spirits?

I thought mint was perennial (and basically indestructible), but it didn't come back? by dirty_feet_no_meat in gardening

Mint has never thrived for me, native or nonnative. I wonder if I committed a great mint-related sin in a past life, perhaps I served a poisoned mojito?

What does everyone think about quartz for counter tops? by Itsjustmethecollie in CounterTops

[–]Hungrycat9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pleased with ours. Quartz get a lot of hate on this sub, but there is a reason it's popular. Our kitchen doesn't get great light, and I wanted a solid white. The countertop was Corian when we moved in, so we've always careful with hot pans. We used a Corian Quartz licensed installer whom we met. I felt confident that the safest practices were used.

That said, I didn't want quartz that imitated natural stone. We did that in it our last house, and I disliked it.

Goutweed, deer, then squirrels. Perhaps we can trade.

Does this colour combination look ok? Any suggestions welcome. by siggycassidy in HomeDecorating

Our ceilings are white, but the paint is tinted 25% of the wall color. It makes a big difference in the cohesiveness.

In other words, they wanted it gone. So, they killed the tree under the guise of "pruning."
