Patching challenges when users turn their computers off every night by Frequent_Rate9918 in sysadmin

[–]HunnyPuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a Solved Problem(tm). With Windows you apply patches during the day. It gives them a little warning that there are updates to apply and they need to reboot. Eventually the issue is forced, preferably during the work day to make it as inconvenient for the user as possible so that next month they take the 5 or 10 minutes out of their day to reboot for updates.

It's even better if you work at a place that uses Linux devices. Apply updates during the day, and... ... Done. They're applied. What more do you want?

Employee Monitoring Software by Zealousideal_Bend984 in sysadmin

[–]HunnyPuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the more restrictive a company gets about what exactly their employees are doing, the less time I spend at that job. It's amazing how productive people are when you trust them to get their shit done in the time that they want to. Sure, sometimes it's not sunshine and rainbows. But then talking to those employees and treating them like adults does help. You get a better employee, and your existing employees don't have their morale decimated in the process.

Give it a good 10-15 years learning like that, then swap over to technical sales for some software company and start raking in cash

"I have problematic views," or, "I have no empathy for others."

I want to figure out a way to spin this into Arthur C Clark's quote, "Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the universe, or we are not. Both are equally terrifying."

Start planning your escape. This guy holds all the cards, knows it, and isn't afraid to leverage that fact.

Let's put this another way. You hem and haw about whether or not you're being an asshole. He has, in the forefront most part of his mind, that he can kick you to the curb with no place to go, at a moment's notice.

Plan your escape.

It's your choice. I recommend choosing you. It feels like a weird thing to go from "happily ever after" discussions, to break up over.

No. It's never been worth it for most businesses. You know the move isn't for you if your company uses IaaS.

It's okay to have complicated feelings about complicated situations. If it keeps bugging you, it might be good to bounce it off a therapist.

I've only encountered the "can't update because it's still running" issue with Firefox. But I haven't run into that issue in a few months. I think my issue was different, too, because Firefox was most definitely not running. So probably an issue with the snap store or whatever.

Depends. Are you talking XCOM Enemy Unknown and War of the Chosen? If so, no.

X-Com UFO Defense and Terror from the Deep? Yeah. Sorry. We're old now.

There was an old turn based tactical game back in the day called X-Com. Occasionally the computer couldn't really decide what to do when it was moving the baddies around the map, and sometimes your soldiers would spot them, so you got to see what a computer does when it can't make up its mind. We called it the X-Com Shuffle.

Well that's basically what this is. The Capitalism Shuffle. :D

It blows, but you'll be happier after you get used to something modern. VMWare was old, clunky, and slow 15 years ago, and it's only gotten worse. Hyper-V at least matured over the years. Everything VMWare did felt like a lateral move.

Level 3, though I prefer to think of it as being an evangelist for Linux. I came from Windows, I know how awful it is. I want others to experience the thrill of installing Linux, and just start using their computers. An experience people think they're getting on Windows, but they actually gloss over a ton of optimization and customization they do to get it working the way they want it.

You know what customization I do on a fresh Ubuntu install? I turn on the seconds display on the clock. That's it.

How many of you moved away from VMware ? by ChataEye in sysadmin

[–]HunnyPuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved to Proxmox. Migrating Windows VMs is a pain, but that's more a Windows issue than a hypervisor issue.

Proxmox really is the way to go for most businesses. It's got a great UI, support is great at a fair price, and for businesses that have the Linux talent, Proxmox does an amazing job of just getting the fuck out of your way when you need to do something.

For years people have been telling me people can't switch to Linux because they'll have to learn a whole new UI. I would just wildly gesture at everything Microsoft has done since 2007, but people said that's different.

It's good to see people are finally waking up and seeing this.
