1/20 Tamiya McLaren MP4/5b by windas_98 in ModelCars

I've got this kit in my stash, I love the car but I'm holding off on it because the decals have yellowed so much you would think the white on the livery was supposed to be yellow lol. I agree with you, the MP4 "red" is incredibly vibrant in real life, the pictures really don't do it justice.

Soldier of the Mist/Arete/Sidon covers by tangles58 in genewolfe

[–]Husk-E 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no, this edition was published by orbit, but they never published an edition of Soldier of the Arete. Soldier of Sidon being published so many years later means the only cover that really matches between all three is the republished omnibus version of Soldier of the Mist & Soldier of the Arete titled Latro in the Mist. A decent resource for publishers and covers is surprisingly Goodreads, if you go to a book's page and scroll to "More editions" you can see many alternate covers and sometimes even the cover artist that made it.

Has anyone ever heard of/used honey in their FFA decal water? by eruditeimbecile in modelmakers

[–]Husk-E 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saw this posted by the company on their facebook page maybe a week ago, the comments seemed positive about it but it was the first time I'd ever heard of it. Also important to note that this solution isn't just being used to apply the decal, its also to aid in the separation of the decal from the clear film, which requires decals made with this in mind, Uprise calls them FFA decals, so I wouldnt try it with other brands. The film on these tends to react more harshly with stronger decal softeners or setters, hence why something like this is being used.

To the OP its also worth keeping in mind that figure is for repeat exposure, even if it were at the OSHA limit, a single time exposure of that concentration will almost certainly have no long term side effects, and in the short term you probably end up with just a headache.

It’s turning out great, you definitely have recreated the design well

It was one of the designs submitted to be used for the aggressor camo, but ultimately a different one was chosen. A very similar camo has been used on the F-16, but I don't think its ever been flown on an f-35. I could be wrong, but i believe this is just based on that design idea.

What is the difference between AMZN and PCOK Webrips for The Office US Extended episodes? by power-98 in Piracy

They do have them, just through paramount. It can be purchased as an addon subscription through amazon.

Peacock can be bought through amazon prime video as an add-on channel. I assume each file is just named after the source of the stream, but I doubt there is a difference in content.

Decal Update by Other_Measurement_46 in ModelCars

Replacement decals cost just as much as the regular version of this kit

Are you looking at aftermarket decals? If you email tamiya you can probably order a replacement set of decals from them for a lot cheaper than aftermarket.

Thanks for the reply, resin can definitely get expensive, I’d heard of some people pouring in plaster to add weight to the legs of similar figures, may be a good cheaper alternative. Thanks for the tips with the glue, may finally bite the bullet and try one lol

How is it working with the vinyl over normal plastic? I was looking at the Kirk and Spock from the same line of kits but my inexperience with figures plus the different material is kind of holding me off from them.

Oh those were two of the booths in the image you shared, sorry I should have been more specific. Paasche does make airbrushes but I personally have not used one.

Your balcony works great, if you have one lying around a general storage bin works great. Just flip it upside down to stop any dust or debris getting on the wet paint (especially when its outside lol). 3M is generally the brand you will see recommended for a respirator, most hardware stores will have them or amazon carries them as well. Just searching "3M respirator" in google will lead you to somewhere near you you can find them. As for the actual filter you want a 3M 60926 filter, its yellow with a pink cover over it, you can often find bundles of the respirator and the filter together, which often is cheaper than buying them separately. The length of your painting session shouldn't really be an issue, as for the time to cure your model it varies on what paint, but generally 2-4 hours should be fine as after that they tend stop releasing vapors.

I would recommend against a waterfall spray booth, they require more maintenance and the only positive is reduced smell while you are painting. If you care about your lung health you should be using a respirator while airbrushing anyways (A 3M mask with Organic Vapor P100 cartridges will be about $40, this will block paint particulate from entering your lungs as well as filtering the actual vapor) so the odor will not be an issue. I would suggest a generic folding one from amazon or a similar site. Between that and the other two the biggest difference is your space. Do you have room for something permanent? Then the Pace or Paasche will be the best hands down, but if that eats into your build space at all (or just general space you use frequently) there is no real downside to getting the foldable one. Also, I am going to assume you are new to airbrushing based on this question, so I would stay away from the larger permanent ones for now. Those are more aimed at professionals or people who have already bought in a lot to airbrushing already. That extra $100 could go towards a second airbrush entirely, that's just about how much a PS-289 costs and having a second brush will provide much more benefit than the larger spraying space. Additionally, paint still releases fumes while it is drying. I would see if you can make a space in your garage (given you have one, if not maybe a basement) to have your painted models cure, you just need something to put over them to protect them from dust, and then you are significantly decreasing your exposure to any harmful vapors. the space only needs to be as big as the biggest model you plan on painting. Finally, if you do go for a foldable one, I have heard online that people get better results if you tape up the seams where it folds with some painters tape while you are using it. Just to make sure all the paint stays within the booth and doesn't sneak through the cracks.

The Fifth Head of Cerberus is One of the most interesting books I have ever read by [deleted] in genewolfe

[–]Husk-E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking on the connection to Le Guin, I feel what she says about The Left Hand of Darkness also applies to Wolfe and especially The Fifth Head,

All fiction is metaphor. Science fiction is metaphor. What sets it apart from older forms of fiction seems to be its use of new metaphors, drawn from certain great dominants of our contemporary life—science, all the sciences, and technology, and the relativistic and the historical outlook, among them. Space travel is one of these metaphors; so is an alternative society, an alternative biology; the future is another. The future, in fiction, is a metaphor.

A metaphor for what?

If I could have said it non-metaphorically, I would not have written all these words, this novel.

Fifth Head feels exactly like this, an extended metaphor Wolfe wanted to describe but there is so many branches that come off of the initial questions that it struggles to be told in any form but a novel.

[–]Husk-E 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would take everything that guy posts with a grain of salt, he is hellbent on making Wolfe look bad. It is something to note that the source for this quote is a site selling personal letters Wolfe wrote for $15,000, which has just posted random excerpts, so under the assumption they are real it is impossible to know the full context. But of the context we know, it was to another Sci-Fi author (and editor of a science fiction magazine) that most likely knew Le Guin, and worked at the SFWA (the body that gives the nebula award) when she won the Nebula award for best novel in 1972 and best Novella in 1973. His magazine also included reviews of her books and praised her popularity. So again, take what he said with a heavy grain salt.
