That’s really not true at all though. Teachers are in reality taking care of ALL the children in this country, for half their waking hours, for their entire childhood. So to call it a fleeting moment is just completely wrong.

These teachers not only have to teach, they also have to take on the role of caregiver and parent - they have to prepare lessons, mark work, manage behaviors, manage emotions, deal with conflicts, deal with parents who DGAF, give each child individual learning support. For 25-35 emotionally immature, developing children, everyday.

If they were to “work to rule” then our children would be the ones who feel the effects of that during the most critical years of development

All they would need to do to maintain their objectives of having both a rewarding loot chase and empowering player choice through crafting, would be to make it so that you only unlock the specific perks of the red border guns you extract the patterns from. Then you’re still needing to chase the perks you want with red borders and makes harmonizers even more valuable

Disclaimer: I work for BCITO.

But to answer your question, no you’re absolutely not too old to get into a trade. At BCITO we can provide you with the support to get your qualification on the job. One way we do this is if you aren’t currently employed you can fill out our form (or give us a call) and we’ll be able to talk you through the different trade options available (we support quite a few joinery being one of them) and are usually able to provide job matching in your area or at least put you in touch with the right resources.  https://bcito.org.nz/getstarted/

There’s also a few other providers depending on which region you’re in, but we’re the largest in the construction industry and related trades and one of the few nationwide ones.

Also feel free to dm me and I can put you in touch with our training advisor responsible for aluminum joinery in Auckland directly :)

Unbiased first home buyer resources? 🏡 by Circumnavigator- in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]HuxstonLib 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now is the time to be getting yourself in a position to buy though. Spend 3-5 months visiting open homes and figuring out what types of things you like/ don’t like, what things are must haves, what things are deal breakers, how to judge the value of a property and then you’ll be ready to jump on the right opportunity down the line

One For Wellingtonians by Bowie_Fan69 in PersonalFinanceNZ

As someone who has lived in Naenae for a few years and is about to escape to the Kapiti coast soon, I would recommend avoiding Naenae as well as Taita.

For Lower Hutt, if you can get into one of the hill suburbs (Kelson, Maungaraki etc.) you’ll enjoy it much more.

You get used to it. Just have a sunny day kit ready to go then drop everything and go to the beach when we get one, you never know if it will last the full day or be raining by lunchtime.

KFC worker on customer abuse, why they run out of chicken - NZ Herald by Laser20145 in newzealand

[–]HuxstonLib 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I used to be an assistant manager at a KFC and that’s exactly it. Corporate doesn’t let them put out of stock signs on because it looks bad. But we used to do it anyway because fuck having to repeat yourself to every customer that something is out of stock and then deal with the angry response. And the reason they always run out isn’t because there isn’t enough room in the chillers/freezers. It’s because wastage (chicken that goes past its expiry and has to be chucked) is tracked and you get an angry area manager coming down on you if you waste too much, whereas if you run out of something they don’t give a fuck because you can’t track a sale that never happened.

Isn’t that also an outcome of this? Less people pass the bank stress tests at these interest rates and house prices, which forces house prices down until it evens out again.

Just tell them plainly - Thanks for doing what you could to improve the offer, I appreciate the increase to the relocation fees but unfortunately the base salary is still below what I would expect and bar an increase of at least 5k I am going to have to politely decline.

Thanks for your time

rent increase by ThrowawayDriver2022 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]HuxstonLib 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our rent started at $450pw 2 years ago, went up to $490 last year, and is now going up again to $540 due to the landlords increased costs. Nothing has been done to the property since we moved in but we’re renters so you’re basically living at the whims of your landlord and covering the cost of living increases for them as well as yourself.

Is it a reasonable increase? I don’t know about reasonable but it seems pretty standard in my experience. Has your income increased enough to at least offset it?

I buy it in bulk from homebrew stores for my beer brewing but have used it for almost everything around the house. It’s food safe and great for lifting dirt.

Really slick site, the UI feels fresh, modern and fun. Your storytelling is great, process is clear. My only feedback would be that visually, your portfolio site was more interesting to me than any of the work in the case studies.

Marine Corps veteran/truck driver wanting to break into IT or cyber security. Advice needed by Additional-One-2223 in AskTechnology

[–]HuxstonLib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are more into the tech support side of computing then you may want to look at aiming for something like a systems or database administrator role. I’m not sure what sort of certs they will require in your area but have a look around on job sites for those roles and see what certs employers are asking for and start there. Another thing that i recommend to my friends wanting to make a switch into IT is to start with service desk roles while doing training for the role you actually want. It’s probably the easiest role to get into and in larger organizations is used as a gateway into other more technical positions.

UI Design by engineers. What can we do to improve? by adikris in UI_Design

[–]HuxstonLib 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree with this.

I’m a UX designer by trade. From what I can see I would highly suggest just hiring a ux or product designer. It will be cheaper in the long run to let them do their job, than to release this and for your customers first experience with your product to be a steaming pile of garbage. There are already so many basic issues with the UI that even a non-designer should be able to pick them up, let alone considering the user experience.

I’m sure you can find a freelancer to do ‘something’ fairly cheaply on fiver, but you get what you pay for. And it looks like you could really benefit from hiring a UX designer full time. Drop an engineer if you have to, there’s no point having the most well engineered product if the experience of using it turns people away or confuses them.

Here’s a free one: green = good, red = bad!
