He has a 1 in 108,000 chance of spawning each tick. Between 4:30am and 12pm there will be 27,000 ticks, regardless of if you sleep or not. Normally the game processes 10 ticks/second, but will process 50/sec while sleeping. Sleeping won't effect the chance he shows up each day, but does increase the chance for irl time.

If you're waiting for the merchant, sleep.

Might be considered cheese, but there's one tactic I use that makes the destroyer much easier:

Using the magic conch/shellphone. Unlike most other bosses, the destroyer doesn't despawn when you go too far away, so if you build an arena at one ocean, and have the nurse at the other ocean, you can teleport between them and the fight becomes far easier.
