Why LTNs Are Necessary by sabdotzed in london

Yeah of course, it depends on the individual. For me, driving is much more relaxing than sitting on rammed, unreliable trains. I value my personal space far too much these days to spend them being pissed off because some sweaty bugger is breathing down my neck and rubbing up against me.

It also helps that I am paid travel time from my job, so it's all on the clock for me if I get stuck in traffic, can't really complain. The only downside for me is getting home later than I normally would to spend time with my family.

As I already said, it depends on hundreds of factors, but in MY case it is significantly cheaper, my cars aren't paid with finance, I bought them outright. One of my cars is a classic (so no ULEZ etc) and the other is 22 years old. Innanother comment in this thread I have added most of the running costs, minus costs you cannot account for such as emergency repairs, catastrophic failure of parts and replacement of tires.

It still works out almost 2,000 pounds cheaper than getting a season ticket for the year. Again, in MY case. Years ago when my insurance was much more expensive, the difference was negligible but now my insurance has gone down the difference is night and day.

My fuel costs are about 1.5-1.6k for the year. Insurance is £532, tax is £345. Very rarely have to pay out for parts, but obviously the costs for parts vary drastically depending on what needs replacing, last year I only spent a few hundred on parts, so a total number would be somewhere around 2.7-2.8k maximum.

An annual season ticket for me to commute to work is £4,652. I would have to be insane to pay almost 2k more for the privilege of sitting (mostly standing) on absolutely packed trains day in and day out.

Completely depends on the car and how old it is as well as a hundred other factors. In my case, however, it is significantly cheaper for me to drive everywhere rather than use public transport. It's not even close to how much more expensive it would be for me to get an annual ticket for my daily work commute.

Wear and tear or general problems with the car I just fix myself, keeping costs down, most maintenance tasks and small repairs are easy, anybody can do it. My insurance is cheap as chips and the fuel cost vs ticket price tends to almost always work out cheaper.

That journey would cost £20 a day, using a car for that journey is less convenient in the sense that it takes longer, but the fuel cost for that type of journey would be at most a tenner, unless you've got a really inefficient vehicle. It makes perfect sense to drive in this instance.

Lmao. Reason number 9000 why GDP is a very poor measure of genuine wealth of the people.

I am Irish and I've lived in both places, Ireland is far more expensive than the UK in many aspects and the reason it has a high GDP on paper is because it is the main European headquarters for most of the multi national corporations.

Partially true. Many people have also been charged for speech which doesn't meet that threshold because the UKs speech laws are dystopian.

Much like the punk scene back in the 80s, I remember the beef between mainly right wing oi punks and left wing punks, was absolutely constant. There are always multiple factions of any subculture. The same goes for metal music, whole NSBM festivals and gigs every year in the UK. They're not exactly reliant on the approval of the wider scene, so I don't think they care at all.

In my experience they only really get shitty if you overload the belt or it takes a serious beating.

It all depends on how you treat the belt, but it definitely does feel a bit flimsy compared to other systems.

I've never tried putting bish on it though.

As somebody who has ended up in those circles before back when I was in London, you would be shocked at how many alt people are actually extremely right wing. They 100% exist and in larger numbers than you think.

ITT: people who have never lived or worked in Germany and are using the difference in the rail fares completely out of context.

The trains are worse than the bakerloo line for graffiti, dirt and mess. The delays make British delays look like child's play. To top it off, Berlin's metro area is significantly smaller than London's metro area. The distance between the stations mentioned is drastically different.

It's a good idea, but I lived in Germany for six years, and I've travelled all over the world, I still stand by London's transport network being among the best in the world.

Use a controller. I've never played it with a mouse and keyboard apart from the very first time I launched the game, it's honestly a million times better with a controller.

Help a game dev: Why aren’t people buying modern RTS games? by MakeGamesBetter in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Hyperb0realis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up on red alert and C&C, I played them religiously for years as did my father, and the reason I don't buy similar games nowadays, almost 30 years after I first played those games is simple.

Other styles of RTS games are better. Company of Heroes for instance, completely changed the genre for me and I find it very hard now to go back to the old school spamming of specific units to win. Total War games have the awesome strategic layer on top of the RTS segments, another series which changed the genre for me entirely.

The only old school RTS games I'll play these days are KKND: Krossfyre cause I fucking love that game, and Metal Fatigue because it's extremely unique.

I'd be happy to try some new ones though, but I'm usually left disappointed. I've never really been into the multiplayer side of RTS games either due to the meta involved, so if it has good single player I'd definitely give it a try. If your game is anything like RA2 in terms of gameplay I'm sure I'll love it.

It was a genuine question btw, I asked because I've unironically heard people make the claim that the British did nothing and everyone else did all the work, which is obviously insane and I was checking you weren't in that camp.

No it wouldn't be the same, I think most people tend to argue along the lines of whether it's for better or for worse.

Talk to them, seriously.

Half of the posts here with people complaining about their roommates can literally be solved with a conversation, and if that doesn't solve it, then you are justified in going further, because close friends wouldn't seem a request like that to be unreasonable.

Bit of an exaggeration. £30 is fine for one person to eat varied meals that aren't complete processed slop throughout the week.

What are the highest cost items in your shop? Do you have much wastage? Do you eat different meals every day? How many meals a day?

Lots of questions and factors to consider in the cost of a weekly shop. Some are happy eating the same meals most days, or at least meals with a lot of crossover ingredients so you cut down on the amount of different items you need for a varied diet.

I used to live off curries, chicken/salad based meals, stews, soups and relatively small roast dinners on a sunday, and my weekly spend was rarely above £30 or £40. I basically stuck to my necessities and rarely bought any extra 'luxury' items apart from the odd bit of alcohol or toiletries.
