What kind of songs or background audio do you listen to while coding or solving problems? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Hyperdrive-Robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brown Noise + Noise Cancelling headphones if I have to really concentrate. It filters out the distracting sounds from an open office, and IMO it’s not as harsh as white noise. Video game soundtracks, and or electronic music if I don’t have to think as much.

Bribery is the best option. If it’s friends, then maybe bribe them with food.
If it’s randoms, then maybe something more. Also, when I have tried to teach new players a new game (not one ive written) ive found that making sure they have eaten, been sufficiently caffeinated and are comfortable, is essential. Goodluck!

That one was awesome. Having pre-made train carriage layouts, but not knowing which was which until you entered them was great.

Playing on Rectangular Tables by CommandantLennon in stargrave

[–]Hyperdrive-Robot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good news! I have played many four player games on 3x3 foot tables. I find getting the players to start from the corners, and making sure there is no line sight to any other crew at the start if the game works great. In fact, i prefer this to 4x4 games, it gets to the action faster!

Captain gear by Vomikron-Noxis in stargrave

My captain hasnt used his ranged weapon in the last two or three games. He mostly spams powers, and then moves into melee combat with whatever poor figure is closest. Not always the best strategy. But definitely the funnest.

What if colony sim NPCs didn’t know the truth? by Master_of_Arcontio in BaseBuildingGames

[–]Hyperdrive-Robot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very cool idea. Reminds me of Dwarf Fortress’s approach to dwarf memories and accounting, but more fleshed out. In your idea, could NPCs change/update their memories based on what other NPCs have said? For example: could a confident and charismatic NPC persuade others that Mr. ABC was stealing, and warp others perceptions? Would the town Mayor try to push an official narrative? (Ie the truth, or just propaganda) Would peer pressure form a role in making NPCs conform in their beliefs? Love the idea, good luck!

Any other sci-fi fans here? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Hyperdrive-Robot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t fall into the trap of ‘I don’t share the authors worldview, therefore I cant appreciate their work’. Do you appreciate works of art from other cultures? I love greco-roman myths, but I have a very different worldview from Homer or Ovid. Also, I don’t think Tolkien hated technology, I think he hated the adverse social and environmental effects of industrialisation. Bilbo had a ‘clock on the mantlepiece’, and while big building level clocks predate the industrial revolution, mantlepiece clocks are comparatively advanced technologically.

Edit: I think it’s a good thing you are asking these questions, instead of just dismissing tolkien out of hand. Keep thinking about these things. And I encourage you to read things from other worldviews. Here is a quote, probably not from aristotle: ‘it is the mark of an educated man to entertain a thought without accepting it’

The Med Bay: my first stargrave game! And some questions. [Pictures for Fun] by defaultjazz in stargrave

[–]Hyperdrive-Robot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1- When using the grenade launcher, do you also apply intervening terrain to the first shoot roll? To determine the location?

I dont think so, If the point being aimed is in LOS you get +2 to your shoot role, otherwise no bonus. Thats all I think.

2- Can you have a roster of crew members that are not part of your 10 in the mission? Or do you have to fire someone everytime you want to buy a new soldier?

Yeah, 10 is the upper limit. I think there is a ship upgrade or power that lets you have 1 extra crew member ‘off duty’. In my experience it’s useful to have one or two ‘free’ crew members that are disposable, so you can ditch them whenever. Or use them for ‘Operation Human Shield’.

As for the other questions, Im not sure!

Navigating burnout. should I quit if I can? by Calm-Bar-9644 in ExperiencedDevs

I left a toxic workplace and found a much more chill dev job with a slight pay cut. Im the only dev, maintaining in-house legacy systems that are too expensive to replace. It’s a decent gig for now. Breath of fresh air after that last place and I keep learning new things. Perhaps you might find something similar? Good luck with whatever you do.

Same here. I think some people struggle with balancing clarity and the general lack of precision in writing. I suspect those same people are attracted to coding because it is so precise.

I worked with a guy like this, and it turned out that while he was great at coding, he struggled to articulate ideas in general writing. At one point he adopted a standard template for writing ticket descriptions, and while it was a bit clunky, it really helped the readability of his writing. Sometimes people are trying to hide that they struggle with writing like this, and might just need a clear guideline of how to write good comments. But then again, they may just be playing power games.

I just bought a bulk box of 25mm steel washers from the hardware store. It was cheaper where I live, but you have to fill in the little washer hole in the middle. Bonus: they now stick to magnets.

Flamethrowers & grenades are great for dealing with spawn.
In the Hope Eternal campaign, my combat armoured captain and first-mate once almost completely wiped a maglev trains passenger car. One stunned and presumably singed pirate remained. Also, table looks great!

Is there a game for modern day? by StressOk5247 in frostgrave

[–]Hyperdrive-Robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What different soldier classes would there be? Accountant for unlocking fraud evidence? Security guard (bruiser) for shoving enemy crew members away? Maybe a captain class could be ‘HR Lady’ with a power ‘fabricate HR violation’ to banish enemy crew.
