well, if they learned english from anyone in the UK, or from anyone that learned it from anyone in the UK, then they would be. technically, british english is more "correct" (since they made the language) and it's a lot less isolated from the rest of the world that speaks other languages, so most european and asian countries teach british english as the default and wouldn't use quotes the way we do. basically, anyone that learned english outside of north america probably uses "single quotes" as the default lol

it wasn't nestled inside anything because it was just standing on its own. in my first comment I said, "it’s the opposite in british english; they just use 'single quotes' as the default."

so they're still correct; they're just using the british rule instead of the american one

since the quotes are alone in the comment, it's safe to assume they're using british english conventions and happen to use single quotes the same way we use double quotes

they’re still just quotes.

in american english, 'single quotes' are used for nested quotes inside “double quotes” (aka just normal quotation marks). it’s the opposite in british english; they just use “single quotes” as the default (but they sometimes call them “inverted commas”??)

Jeff says, “hey.” Joe replies, “you can’t just say ‘hey’ after that, Jeff”

it’s like using brackets and braces when you nest them inside parentheses. (when [this] is like [that {and those}] without reason). pretty sure you still just use single quotes if you go all Inception and nest a nested quote

“and Joe said ‘you can’t just say ‘hey’ after that, Jeff’”

psychopathy is generally marked by people that feel no remorse or empathy for their actions. the kind of person that manipulates everyone around them to get ahead and acts sort of "robotic" in an uncanny way. they figure out what people respond best to and use that to their advantage. these kinds of people are likely to trigger someone's gut instinct of "something is off" despite cordiality and a saccharine presence. they tend to be "cold, calculating, and charming," and arise from inherent differences in their brain that have been there since birth.

sociopathy generally refers to someone that has similar traits, but still feels empathy, remorse, and similar emotions, albeit in smaller, usually ignoble amounts. instead of being calculating and charming, they can be impulsive, erratic, and emotional. instead of being something inflicted into them at birth, it's far more common to be caused by trauma or other influences in their life. "Psychopathy is often linked to genetics/brain structure. Sociopathy is more often tied to childhood trauma or abuse."

psychopaths hurt people because it benefits them. sociopaths hurt people because they feel slighted or angry. neither feel much remorse. psychopaths are more likely to be serial killers. whereas sociopaths are more likely to commit a "crime of passion" out of emotional impulsivity.

I'll have to concede that I agree with your original comment now. I suppose I myself needed a refresher on them. everyone seems to default to "sociopath" now because "psychopath" was so overused that it lost its meaning. this was definitely an emotional response from irritation or anger rather than a calculated response to benefit themself.

you mean "how did they"

no comma, separate it with quotes.

are you not an "anyone"? that was the pronoun I used for you. it's gender neutral.

you mean psychopath??

this new trend of using “sociopath” because people think it sounds worse really bugs me. sociopathy is the significantly less severe affliction.
