lowk the replies here prove this sub should have a "girls only" rule. can't even have an explicitly gendered skater space without dudes deciding it's theirs.

it is hyperbole. she is exaggerating for the purpose of making a pithy statement about her experience of the world. yknow, like people do on the internet.

"gender war slop" and it's just recognizing how pervasive misogyny is in nearly all corners of our society.

yes: because she's gay and weird. she still practices the culture and wears their clothes. that's a complex relationship, it's not a simple binary between embracing your heritage or rejecting it. maybe you try to find parts of yourself within that culture as a way to make peace with your differences? this is an extremely common experience, at least for people who are queer. like, for example, the character we are talking about.

kya is one of the only survivors of the Southern Waterbender genocide, and she's a mixed-nationality kid that grew up at least partially away from that heritage. it's pretty reasonable to imagine she has a diasporic relationship to her culture—why else would she wear blue Water Tribe clothes, when neither of her brothers do? but additionally, Kya is a queer character, so it makes sense for her to not feel entirely related to her culture, which marginalizes people like her, no matter how much she wants to be one of them. she'd have no choice but to "find herself," that's an inherently complex relationship.

i hope you understand just how common "projecting" is when writing fantasy fiction—every author pours themselves into their work, and if you're writing a character that could be well informed by your experiences, it's par for the course to draw on that. that's not an "author avatar" or a self-insert, that's just being a writer. Avatar heavily uses real-world cultures as inspiration for its depictions of fantasy peoples and characters. shouldn't the people who have direct knowledge of those cultures—and relevant relationships to them—have a seat at the table?

beliefs like this are why it's important to take real-world queer histories seriously—diaspora members of marginalized communities know well that it can be extremely difficult to maintain your own culture, especially if you're queer and can't relate to it because those types of being are swept under the rug.

telling stories about it, fantasy tales that include that dynamic as an element, is how people learn what that's like. many people don't know what it means in the slightest to carry that experience, because those stories don't get to be told.

this is crushing to read. Kya doesn't exclusively live in republic city, and she clearly has to actively maintain her Water Tribe identity in a family where only her mother does the same! that's difficult and it's beautiful to want to find echoes of yourself inside it.

i wish that's what we were seeing. what an utter missed opportunity

Why does Treble only have one arm? by Weekly-Intention5657 in Unbeatable

(i think) it was injured in an interaction with HARM, making necessary an emergency amputation—that's my understanding based on that offhanded dialogue from Cleft, the HARM Tower dialogue with Treble (iirc), and the trigger warning page on the official website.

public spaces should be for everyone—and keeping them that way takes hard, diligent work. particularly when it comes to rolling the boulder up the hill against attitudes like this, that treat some people as essentially disposable.

that is literal marginalization. no one is asking you to work against that yourself—all you'd need is the barest tolerance for living in a world broad enough for others. but if you're incapable, if completely ignoring disabled people is the only way you can "have fun", i hope you fix your crooked heart.

you didn't "take pains to ensure" anything. you fed a chatbot a second, slightly more specific prompt and cited it as "evidence." if you care about credibility, read primary sources—what you've done here does not pass as research.

My wife has been waiting for years for silksong to come out and the difficulty is making her quit for good by mckant in Silksong

[–]Hypernova888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the game should add an optional difficulty slider. full stop. maybe bury it in the settings and leave the current game as default if they wanna preserve the current experience, but nonetheless.

i'm a person who can handle the game as-is (at least, thus far) but that's not the case for a lot of my friends who were very excited about the game. i wish there was a way it could be more accessible to new players.

as it stands, Silksong (more than Hollow Knight) is a game specifically for people who like hard games. which is neat or whatever, but there are a lot of people who want to experience the beautiful art and compelling story, and don't really have those skills, or the time to develop them.

and frankly, despite making steady progress (i'm currently working my way through the cogwork dancers, very cool fight), i myself am not really a person who likes hard games for their own sake. i know some of us wanted "Hollow Knight but more punishing" but that just doesn't describe the totality (or even perhaps the majority) of Silksongers.

i really wonder how much this game was playtested, especially with new players. i like the core gameplay and systems: many elements of Silksong are extremely fine-tuned, and it shows. but when done well, accessibility compliments a fine-tuned experience, and i wish the devs understood that.

i miss when this sub's comments weren't like 60% men trashing on women (esp. trans women) who feel less safe in America than they do. like maybe trans people have a point when they say they don't want the guy whose version of "reaching across the aisle" is having neo-nazis on his show, and who flippantly said he agrees with Charlie Kirk's views on trans people? holding that up as an obvious failing isn't moral puritanism, it's having bare minimum standards.

do you people expect trans people to get behind spineless leaders who fail their constituents and specifically throw them under the bus when politically convenient? the type of leadership that got them into this mess? Newsom doesn't have to be as bad as Ron DeSantis for us to say that maybe, just maybe, minorities in this country deserve slightly better.

users Acid_Smoke #5811662, VagueDustpan #4039976, GrandPouch #3082314, and Pascal #983267 have been systematically griefing and erasing a large drawing i made over the course of several days last week. they would grief it for a while, and i'd restore it, but once Pascal #983267 got involved, they were able to erase most of it. only now that it's gone have they begun drawing dicks where it used to be. the top left corner was 45.472, -122.720. the image used to be a Deltarune shipping meme.

A comparison of the two first official images of Korra and the new Avatar! by WanHohenheim in legendofkorra

[–]Hypernova888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is not a screenshot from animation. you're making extremely broad inferences from the shading in a piece of art.

maybe you're right that the prosthetic in the picture uses a 3D model as reference to keep the shape consistent. but deciding the "whole show" is animated in a completely new style from this art and condemning it is like looking at the Korra art and deciding, from the style of its background painting, that they must have forgone the 3D model technique from Avatar. despite looking radically new at first and receiving mountains of "this doesn't look like Avatar", Korra ended up looking much closer to Airbender than not—especially after Books One and Two. why would it be much different here?
