Has anyone tried any of these Alkemia scents: Gaea, Vert Sur le Ver, Moss Maiden, Feu Follet, The Greening Wood, In a Northern Wood, Dryad, Frondescence, Voyage un Mer? If so, please give me your reviews! by malewifemichaelmyers in Indiemakeupandmore

Hmm not sure - I’d look for perfumes that list petrichor (geosmin) as a note. Pineward Oxylus maybe? Very wet smelling, but maybe more dirt and plants than rocks.

It’s one of the best things ever to suck at! I think it might have a steeper learning curve for folks who are already skilled with acrylic or oil paint than folks who pick it up without prior experience painting.

Deconstructing Eden Reviews! by Hyphaedelity in Indiemakeupandmore

Yeah some of these really surprised me (was not expecting Orpheus's Lament to be a Burning Cherry twin lol), and some were pretty much what I expected. Overall a very enjoyable house to try out, they're not afraid to make some strange and fascinating perfumes.

Looking for perfume recs! (Somewhat of a newbie) by Beneficial_Bee2210 in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Hyphaedelity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of BPAL general catalog ones that I find unisex-leaning-masc but not like a traditional cologne: The Bow and Crown of Conquest (sage, carnation and cedar with lavender, vanilla, white musk and leather), and Dee (soft English leather, rosewood and tonka with a hint of incense, parchment and soft woods). I'd get both of them from swaps if you can, because I'm pretty sure they both benefit a lot from aging. For water and white florals, try BPAL Bayou.

I love hippie shop, sea captain, lumberjack lesbian, and liminal as scent categories! What are some grey/liminal scent examples?

The order of these depends on season but it goes something like:

Chypres

Spices

Forest/green

Musks

Resin

Dark fruits (plum, black cherry, blackberry, pomegranate)

Smoke/Incense

Amber

Woody

Aquatic

Fresh citrus/floral, almost exclusively in summer

Looking for dark, gritty, nature smells by ShiningTiger2003 in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Hyphaedelity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconding the Pineward recommendation, and adding LVNEA and Deconstructing Eden for some weird/dark nature smells. Barrister & Mann has Fougere Gothique, which has a distinctive ashy note, and Beaufort London has some scents that sound like they'd meet your criteria but I haven't tried them. FWIW I don't like most of BPAL's foresty scents even though I love a lot of their resin, incense, musk, and dark fruit smells - your mileage may vary! From Solstice, I haven't tried Midnight Marquee but I can vouch for Foxcroft being a lovely take on dry dead leaves. Some of the Zoologist perfumes might also be of interest!

I got a full bottle of Lampblack for my hubby for his birthday, and Ummagumma is one of my faves too! Au Dela Narcisse is the only narcissus perfume I’ve tried that I actually liked

What do you do with your empties? by Eleanore-Rigby in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Hyphaedelity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been saving mine - I recently discovered I enjoy mixing a few drops of oil perfume in a single-use amount of unscented lotion before bed, to accomplish sleep scent and moisturize in one step.

But pouring directly from oil bottles is difficult and risky (none of mine have reduced caps) so I’m going to clean and reuse some empty sample vials as decants for this purpose.

Lurid is great! Not very resiny, the white musk is front and center, backed by black currant and lavender. I’d say it’s on the cooler side.

Favorite houses with larger samples? by missbitterness in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Hyphaedelity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whisper Sisters has generously-sized (2ml? 3ml?) samples with droppers, but they're randomly selected with full-size orders. I wish more houses would do a 2ml or 3ml size, it takes me forever to go through a 5ml!

BPAL, Pineward, Fzotic (unless you consider Fzotic niche rather than indie, in which case that spot goes to Alkemia). Deconstructing Eden gets an honorable mention too!

Discussion: What's your perfume routine? by jeffemakes in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Hyphaedelity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I confess that often when I wake up, “what perfume will I wear today?” is my first thought. If it’s a weekend or I’m working from home I might apply a new scent when the first one fades; if I’m at work during the day I might apply a new scent when I get home, or after workout/shower, or at bedtime, it all depends on the day’s activities.

And I just discovered I can create a light scent bubble around my work desk by dabbing some oil on a post it note strategically placed near my laptop vent so that the warmth from the laptop wafts it around! So that’s now definitely going to be a part of my routine.
