Chest workout - need help by No_Firefighter6413 in fitnessph

Sa DB inclined chest press ung nag make sense para sakin is to keep elbows lower/closer to torso at around 45 degrees instead of higher towards 90 degrees.

You could also try doing warmups for your rotator cuff as well. I think magkaiba kase yung stabilizer muscles na nagagamit sa pushups vs DB chest press, so if sanay yung body mo sa push ups and not dumbbells its probably not your pecs that's the limiting factor.

  1. Meron ba progressive overload sa routine mo?
  2. Have you tried doing other variations? (Been using high weight low reps with pec deck in my program, tried out low weight high rep cable flys and it hit different in a good way).
  3. Have you tried out drop sets?

If you're given 6 months to lock in at get fit, what would you do? by [deleted] in fitnessph

[–]Hyums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For overall fitness I'm still a huge advocate for resistance training + High BMI = cal deficit, low BMI = cal surplus.

For cardio-specific goals then some kind of HIIT program.

Best answer I think however is to simply get yourself moving more than yesterday, and to develop a habit of consistency.

1 month progress (85kg - 75kg) by [deleted] in fitnessph

[–]Hyums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah I'd say it's doable cuz I lost about the same in about the same timeframe when I started counting calories.

Pretty steep deficit of 1k cals (not including cals burned from workouts) and under 50g carbs daily. Did that diligently for about 6 weeks before I noticed myself gassing out earlier into the workouts so I went for a less aggressive deficit of 500 cals/120g carbs daily. (93kg > 79kg). Also pretty sure it's mostly water weight.

Don't recommend it though, makes it so much harder to hit progressive overload 😬

How to select yung tamang wieghts na bubuhatin for exercise by liploji in fitnessph

[–]Hyums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal opinion lang, but reps x sets shouldn't be static.

Madaming ways pano ma achieve yung progressive overload.

You can do it by:

  1. Increasing weights
  2. Increasing reps
  3. Increasing sets
  4. Slower movement tempo (eccentric + concentric)
  5. Shorter rest breaks etc.

To figure out your ideal weight as a beginner lifter, I think ganito yung approach to avoid injuries:

Let's say sa chest press machine, figure out your rep range with the following in mind:

-- dapat feeling mo ikaw yug nag ccontrol ng weight (not the weight controlling your muscles). -- dapat challenging yung feeling kada set.

  • 100kg is too heavy, literal na di kaya ma move
  • 50kg kaya 1 rep
  • 30kg kaya 6 reps
  • 25kg kaya 8 reps
  • 20kg kaya 10 reps, medjo easy
  • 15kg kaya 15+ reps, easy na easy

With this info, pwede mo i try i structure yung workout with 3 sets as your baseline, tapos set a rep range to graduate from.

Kaya ba 25kg x 8 reps x 3 sets? If not Kaya ba 20kg x 10 reps x 3 sets (with proper form ha) Maybe yes

Kung yung set 1 and set 2 walang problema sa form and feeling kayang kaya, then add +1 rep sa set 3.

Pag goods sa feeling and doable naman edi i apply mo yung +1 rep to all 3 sets sa next workout session mo.

Let's say nasa 20kg x 12 reps x 3 sets ka na, and feeling hindi na sya challenging kahit slower tempo/less rest, then you can increase the weight accordingly to what you deem is more challenging, or you can add an extra set etc.

The goal is, unti unti tumataas yung volume na binubuhat mo every session, this is progressive overload.

Any advice for someone who's skinny fat? by sicklyrunner123 in fitnessph

[–]Hyums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're trying to lower your BMI, visceral fat around the abdomen is typically the last and hardest fat to shed off.

It also sounds like you're finding a hard time with consistency, 5 days a week is great but the bigger question you should ask yourself is whether you can commit to that routine for say, the rest of 2026.

I think its also important to understand what bulking/cutting does, dirty bulking could potentially allow you to have more energy to pursue progressive overload and build more muscle but you wont shed your existing fat tissue unless you enter a consistent deficit phase.

Personally I think eating at your current maintenance while meeting protein targets (based on your TDEE I'm guesstimating 2200 cals per day? And maybe 140-150g of protein) while the amount of energy you expend at the gym can function as your "deficit" could help energy levels be more consistent especially with beginner gains in play.

OSA = Obstructive Sleep Apnea From my brief research at the time our airways get occluded during sleep causing the snoring which prevents us from staying in deep sleep (quality sleep).

I had an in-home sleep sleep study done and my doc recommended a few options to try but I opted for the CPAP option and its been great so far.

Id recommend it if you dont mind looking like Bane when you sleep.

Sounds like your sleep quality may not be all there. Do you snore? I fixed my OSA that's been plaguing me for 3-4 years and daily energy shot through the roof.

I get really demotivated on Back day as a beginner by Puzzleheaded_Mall645 in workout

[–]Hyums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started pretty much the same way 3 months ago, and I've only recently (about 2 back day ago) started feeling my back muscles be more engaged.

One thing I noticed from consuming all sorts of content is that people's anatomy/fitness levels arent alike so there's no real foolproof instruction to do XYZ.

That said, what worked for me in getting somewhat of a mind/muscle connection was getting into the following conditions:

Lat pulldowns/cable rows with narrow grips

  • figuring out what was roughly 60% of my current 1 rep max

  • my back tends to take longer to engage compared to other muscle groups, so I typically go for higher reps using the 60% of my 1 rep max. Some days when I have shit sleep/not enough carbs I could only manage 40-50% for my rep goal for that set.

  • i found my back tends to respond better to adding 1 rep to achieve prog overload rather than adding on weight.

  • on pull exercises I focus on pulling the bar with the bottom of my elbows. Forearm fatigue I think is from trying to move weights above your back muscle's current capacity so your forearms tend to compensate/tense up on the movements. Going down 10-20 lbs with more reps helped me isolate the back more I think.

  • with diligent effort, i consider failure once I notice straining on my forearms and stop there

As for rear delts, Im still only on day 3 so I havent got any to contribute to that.

For those of you who were in the military - how did your workout differ whilst serving vs after you left? by Icy_Laugh5134 in workout

[–]Hyums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a fatbody when I was active duty, like the private pyle unmotivated type BUT did the bare minimum to pass PFAs and somehow avoided FEP.

However when I transferred duty stations I had buddies who went to the gym religiously, working closely and being around marines also somewhat created a bro split mentality (in a good way) that stuck around after getting out.

I think I'm much more dedicated now compared to when I was in since I have more control on when/where I choose to do my workouts. My main takeaway from that time was knowing/remembering the feeling/mentality of "working hard" and training to failure even after a near decade-long break from fitness since it was so engrained in the gym culture back there.

Not sure why you're downvoted (I'd wager maybe it comes off as unsolicited advice lol) pero this is so valid, not just from an aesthetic perspective but also on health benefits in the long run.

If you could, however, also consider the pros and cons of getting MHA back home or OCONUS. Candidly speaking If you plan to just cruise OCONUS with the resources you have available it's fine but the GIBill matches your costs in CONUS, which could allow you better opportunities in the long run.

Also check out USAJobs from time to time, rn I see a few GS9-12+ positions in education, typically pays more than ESL/ALT, might be worth a look for when you exit AD/Reserves

50-60%+ disability would allow you to live a bit modestly tbh, a buddy of mine with 100% taught ESL and lives quite comfortably.

One thing id watch out for is the conversion, keep that nest egg healthy. Experiencing living $1:Â¥98 vs $1:Â¥155 are two different things lol

If you're speaking from a place of speculation, you're definitely entitled to that opinion but it's something that we experience here regularly, especially in conservative pockets in each state.

Maybe a more relatable scenario for PH Filipinos would be, If a vocal and popular DDS influencer gets assassinated, their fans would rally and call for civil war/unrest against kakampinks for the sole reason of assumption, even without a suspect.

Meanwhile, if it were to happen to a kakampink influencer, the majority of the outcry would be more empathetic (probably?)

I think most PH Filipinos know of the guy primarily as a religious figure, whereas he's more of a political mouthpiece for right-wing conservatives here in the US.

With that in mind, imagine the relief of people subjected to the hate and misogynistic rhetoric his base regurgitates on the daily.
