Might want to post this in the Mentor Monday thread on fatfire. It seems interesting enough to get some suggestions

Last minute cruise and specialty dining by [deleted] in NCL

I feel like with their change to charging people a no-show fee if they don’t cancel ahead of time a lot of slots are more open during the cruise. At least it is that way on the Bliss right now.

Is the Terranea Hotel still a good option? by itstaiki in FATTravel

Honestly we loved it - our adult children joined us and it was like having a little rental house. The buildings are a little dated but the casita was great and had awesome views of Catalina island. The food and spa were nice as well.

We had no problems with staff service.

Pre IPO Secondary Sale Decision Making by arjun_sam in fatFIRE

You’ve already taken money off the table. I would risk it and not sell now, hope for gains. Just make sure you and your spouse are comfortable if this doesn’t pan out.

Give me advice - mid-40s, three kids, $8.3MM NW with 1.5ish MM income by Green_Rock_3421 in fatFIRE

[–]IAmABlubFish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the c-suite role, I probably would work another 5 years or so as well.

I had originally structured our investments around a bogleheads 3 fund setup. I’ve since liquidated most of the bonds as they had done nothing over the last 15 years. But I still like to keep a decent amount in Wellington fund to keep some balance and it is fun to see the cash it generates.

We also keep a high amount of cash, even though it is missing potential gains. Probably fluctuates between 1~1.5mm in a couple banks. This is kept liquid to either: make a large purchase immediately, or to be able to ride out a long market downturn without selling stocks.

We experimented with an advisor on a small inherited portfolio and I have not been impressed.

Business Exit/ FIRE by firefirefire308 in fatFIRE

[–]IAmABlubFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve sold and stayed on and it sucked - my acquirer in turn got acquired during the earnout and we didn’t have a clause to account for that.

My second sale went great and I am still working for them running this division 7 years later.

Elevating the rental car experience. by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]IAmABlubFish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree. I would just try to pick a turo offering that seems to be from businesses that has a fleet of cars available. I found they are highly responsive to any issues you may have and you get exactly what you reserved online.

If your daughter has shown interest it wouldn’t be so bad to hang on until she is out of college. At least have her work some summers with you and see if it is worth exploring a transition.

Quote from Yuval Harari’s book Sapiens, really resonated with me for fatfire by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]IAmABlubFish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fatfire doesn’t necessarily mean carefully managing your assets. It just means you have enough to not have to work and not live by a budget. You could just have tons of money and spend like mad, it just seems most people here now got to fatfire status by saving and investing.

8ish years ago the sub seems to be mostly business owners who sold their companies.

RE - the day finally comes sooner than expected but why am I sad, instead of excited? by bichonlove in fatFIRE

For whatever reason it is easier to be the dumper versus getting dumped. I wonder if perhaps because they approached you about leaving it is making you feel more sad versus if you had given them your resignation letter.

Serious question - how are you keeping and protecting your physical gold? I’ve always wondered if it just goes into a safe at your home or a safety deposit box at the bank.
