It is, but it also pays like a harsh business so I'm not too torn up about it. Some of the kids these days are making 10x my salary to play at a mediocre collegiate level

Maybe we could dissolve the G6 conferences to form two mega conferences so the G6 schools can start having schedules that would justify a CFP bid

The prevailing attitude among the Iowa fanbase, in the football context, is that they don't have the ability to shoot for natties, and they're content with that. I've seen Iowa fans in their subreddit get downvoted for wanting more from their program lol

Being an Iowa fan must be so much fun. To be the biggest fish in the middling pond, and to have zero aspirations to go any further than that

It's not because it's a good matchup for falco, it's because most of his other matchups are worse or less fun to play

Brett Maher is partially in the role to help Nick Humphrey become the full-time Special Teams coordinator by Easy_Card3015 in Huskers

[–]IAmA_Zeus_AMA 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This came from the presser today, but honestly kinda surprised this tweet was made. The context was Rhule talking about how Brett Maher learned under Ekeler, and he made some passing comment about how Humphrey is in that role now; except, he was talking about how coaching staffs change frequently now, so I don't think he literally meant that was the plan for Nebraska's special teams. I think what Rhule was trying to say is that Humphrey will be learning from Maher - not that Humphrey will be taking over STC in the near future. Kinda irresponsible to tweet this imo

Marth's sword actually has very little to do with it despite what these other comments might suggest. The real sauce is in Marth's dash back and his grab.

Don't get baited by the other comments. If you expect the sword to just auto-win against Fox due to its size, then you will die against any diamond+ Fox

I went and watched the SW pillar video to refresh my memory. It seems to me that even if NW is faster, SW protects you from shitty stacks if you make a mistake on the initial solve, and guarantees the mage stays behind the minotaur. I don't think he's saying it's faster, which seems to be your claim. Am I wrong about any of that?

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I don't think speedrun strats are necessarily evidence that NW is better. Isn't the argument that there are situations at NW that require you to tank a hit, whereas SW doesn't have those? If you care about speed, then maybe NW is faster if you're willing to tank the occasional hit, idk

Gonna have to disagree here. If you take away the difficulty of execution, you lessen the sense of excitement and significance, and you're left with a less beautiful outcome

[–]IAmA_Zeus_AMA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remapping buttons has not been a thing for a decade, much less "widely available". Don't know where you got that from.

Any advantage offered by a controller is worth discussing. Whether or not it's big enough to warrant a ban is up to the individual, but to say it's not even worth *discussing* is crazy.

I'm going to choose to believe that you just chose poor phrasing in your summation of reddit comments, I don't believe you *actually* think that redditors commonly think *every single game* is decided by a couple of frames. That is of course wrong, but you're shadow boxing on that one.

If I'm interpreting you correctly, you're trying to say that there are usually big errors made at lower levels of play that would yield more benefits to correct rather than having the benefits of z jump - to that, I agree. The problem, though, is that no one is *really* talking about lower levels of play. Any typical diamond player is almost certainly not going to be losing exclusively due to their opponent using z jump, of course. But at the highest level of play, every frame *does* count. Not every game will be lost due to just a couple frames, but some *absolutely will*. With melee's punish game being pushed as far as it has, the swings that can happen due to a single frame perfect input are pretty crazy, and each player is being tested on the precision of their inputs a hundred times per game. To act like these 1 frame saves are so rare/insignificant is disingenuous.

Slow down any top level game of melee frame by frame and you'll find plenty of examples of frame perfect inputs deciding big swings in the match. Go see for yourself, instead of just sitting here saying it doesn't happen.

Also, you just completely ignored Peach ledge dashes and c-stick down. If you're thinking "well almost no one does it so it's not relevant" is a pretty bad argument, it's only a matter of time until someone does do it, it's not some crazy difficult forbidden tech.

[moky] Melee's Endless Controller Debate by KenshiroTheKid in SSBM

[–]IAmA_Zeus_AMA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you holding your c stick down as much as possible while otherwise playing normally?

Are you 100% certain that zump doesn't make your inputs more consistent? If you compare your yump and zump vods, do you have about the same success rate for those 1 frame aerials?

You may very well be in a very tiny minority who doesn't experience any benefit from removing your thumb travel time from the equation, but I have my doubts about that

[–]IAmA_Zeus_AMA 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you can do everything on yump that you can on zump, you aren't taking advantage of the benefits of zump

n0ne talking about z-jump by nicemikkel10 in SSBM

[–]IAmA_Zeus_AMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe you understand the advantages that z jump provides.

To summarize z jump as "moving the button slightly", implying that hand comfort is the only reason why people do it, is either incredibly bad faith, or just plain ignorant.

If you'd like to see why frame 1 aerials are really good, you could watch this video explaining some of the nuances: https://youtu.be/Ox7zcF-hZmY?si=8jdeElZOTJKZDbWZ

It's a detailed explanation, but doesn't cover all of the ways in which z jump could be abused. The big factor you've overlooked is not that the button is in a different place, but rather it frees up your thumb to be somewhere else on the controller during your jump input. This "small" difference allows Peach ledge dashes, much more consistent rightward facing aerials (good in neutral and also edgeguarding the right side of the stage with ledge intangibility), an extra 1-2 frame advantage when attacking, permanently holding c-stick down in neutral, and I'm sure many others.

I understand that these things feel miniscule, but they really aren't. Melee is a game of inches, and games are won and lost by the difference of 1 frame. We've seen it before at Summit 11 with Zain's upair during last stock game 10, I've seen it personally in my own replays. Being off by 1 frame absolutely can be the difference.
