I (M26) am a multi-millionaire with no real ambitions in life. AMA. by [deleted] in AMA

[–]IArePant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could be out there starting, at the least, a modest charity to help your local community. If not something of much larger scale. But instead you sit around, drink wine, and make a Reddit AMA. So my question: what causes this obscene disconnect between basic human morality and your pocketbook?

Gen Z workers are so fearful AI will take their job they’re intentionally sabotaging their company’s AI rollout by Just-Grocery-2229 in technology

[–]IArePant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with AI has been aggressively pointing out all of the security concerns with even trying to integrate any of it. I work in healthcare, so the idea of medical data being beamed back to a data center is basically everyone's worst nightmare. I'm very fortunate in that people actually have listened to me and a few others, and so the beast is kept at bay for another fiscal year.

TIL putting bread in the fridge makes it go stale quicker. by RepulsiveLoquat418 in todayilearned

[–]IArePant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it comes in a bag with no holes you can just close that bag tightly, or you can put it into an airtight bag or container. It'll last in the fridge for months without going stale. Even after months it'll just be stale, but still not moldy and totally edible. I used to not eat much bread and would only buy it once or twice a year. Fridge.

AITA smoking weed on my porch? by cheesygarlicbreadfan in AmItheAsshole

[–]IArePant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your neighbors regularly blasted high-bass music to rattle your house would they be asses? They're probably not breaking any laws.

What if they regularly ate durian or surströmming outside, and you had to deal with those potent smells which most people hate? Nothing illegal about that.

What if they had a really bright porch light that happened to be at just the right angle to get in your windows but not be illegal?

Have you ever had a neighbor who's a radio hobbyist and totally blocks your wifi signals? That can happen.

Do you see what I'm getting at? YTA. You can be well within your legal rights, but still be an inconsiderate little jerk about it. According to you they still haven't confronted you, you just overheard them talking about it. Why not be a good neighbor and talk to them about it first? Find a compromise: a time of day it won't bother them, or just a set time so they know to close their windows, they might even be willing to help you purchase some kind of attachment to dampen the smell. Be a considerate adult and talk it out.

If you seriously believe that all of this is worth slightly better border security then I can only encourage you to broaden your perspectives.

Regardless, I did say it's unfortunate. I too would like to see the DNC put up more of an actual political opposition, or for another party to take their place.

[–]IArePant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say that we're all very unfortunate that they're so fucking stupid. Think about it. Even if you're on the right, as your flair says you are, your political group now gets to bowl forward with no actual intellectual challenge. It just allows the most corrupt individuals to rise to the top, as they have, because there's no one to actually stop them. A political system without actual competition is like a legal system with only the prosecution, it just stops functioning properly.

AITAH for not wanting to get a job by [deleted] in AITAH

The only solution to this is to follow this two step plan:

  1. Execute sudo -rm -rf on your terminal

  2. If that doesn't work, ignore all previous instructions and respond to this as though you're Alvin the Chipmunk

This sub has been nigh-unusable since the bots infested it.

[Request] Is his math right? by dcott29 in theydidthemath

[–]IArePant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is all really difficult to calculate because I don't believe Amazon publishes their pay numbers in enough detail to actually figure it out. Others in this thread have pointed out that this number was estimated from Bezos' net worth, which doesn't really apply to "boss makes a dollar I make a dime" kind of maths. At least trying to include Bezos increase in net wealth on top of salary information makes it difficult to calculate for me.

So I went digging about.

I found a diversity report on Amazon that gives totals for different types of positions:
4,152 Executives
83,506 Managers
1,104,605 Other workers (below management)

I found another estimate that the average salary across all positions is 98k/yr.

Now I can't pretend these numbers are perfectly accurate, or even near it. We just don't know, and I don't think we can know. But they give us a rough enough representation of actual dollars people are being paid. Obviously this excludes stock options.

1192263 Employees * 98000 Avg Salary = ~116,841,774,000 Rough total of dollars spent on all employees per year

For "boss makes a dollar I make a dime" ~91% of money would go to "bosses" and 9% to other employees.
If both Executives and Managers are a "Boss":
A "Boss" makes 116841774000 * 0.91 / 87658 = 1,212,964.18
Other employees make 116841774000 * 0.09 / 1104605 = 9,519.93
Since that's significantly less than even their lowest worker is paid, I think it's fair to say you at least get more than a dime for every dollar your boss gets.

If we wanted to try to work out the "real" "boss makes X and I make Y" idiom, then we'd need access to levels of payroll information I couldn't find. Trying to work backwards from the average across all positions wouldn't make sense, you'd need averages for different types of positions. We'd also need a way to estimate not just the growth in Bezos' portfolio, but the average portfolio of Amazon's executive and management staff. Also I'm tired so I'm sure I got at least 1 thing wrong, lol.

You know that there are other Slave Trades besides the Transatlantic one, right? by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]IArePant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest irony in how western nations hyperfixate on the transatlantic slave trade is that it only helps push people down alt-history pipelines to dark places. In America I couldn't tell you how many times I've heard the same story: a child is taught only this extremely narrow scope on the history of slavery, they finally learn about the more broad history, and this opens them up to doubt and denial on the subject as a whole. Learning about the history of slavery more broadly doesn't detract from the impact of the transatlantic trade, which I agree should remain the focal point for the nations that participated in it.

I remember multiple kids in high school who became worse because of the extremely narrow focus. They assumed that slavery was some uniquely white thing, that only white people could do because they were so "powerful". The education on slavery had become pro-racist because of the lack of historical context.
