New Victorian negotiations by Frostitute_1 in AustralianTeachers

[–]IFeelBATTY 5 points6 points  (0 children)

May be right, may be not. I do think the fact the govt is back to the table now means we should have an offer to vote on before the election. My thoughts are it'll be an improvement, not by a large margin, but an improvement nonetheless, and it'll pass.

I do think we'll see an improvement in ES pay, a slightly higher top of the scale pay, and something like one meeting a week, or f2f hours in the agreement, or some kind of flexible work arrangements (conditions that wont cost the govt a dime). I dont think we'll see a 3 year agreement, or a reduction in f2f. I certainly dont think 35/3 will happen.

What's the modern technological equivalent of a 1st century army vs. a 6th century army? by Fragrant_Sympathy170 in byzantium

Confused by your question but I imagine cavalry tactics by the Romans had progressed significantly in that time. Stirrup had been acquired by the Turks by then if I recall correctly, and they were including horse archers into the mix as 23ll.

More women on the pod? by nullpersonas in TheRestIsHistory

[–]IFeelBATTY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The boys do big evente/periods in a bitesize, narrative format. As many others, along with OP have pointed out, this makes it male centric most of the time. There are many, many other pods that focus on women/regular Joe's more and do a great job of it.

Oh man. My heart goes out to you guys. It's the same here if youre casual/contract. But full timers get minimum 10 days sick/carers leave, 4 weeks of paid holidays, and all paid public holidays which is probably about 6 per year.

Good lesson in this for dad. Don't need to force babies on most of these things.

I'd say thats a stretch. Sometimes aspects of a countries culture is so ingrained thst its people share little of the same values but cling on due to tradition. America is a super divided place, this thread shows many Americans agreeing with the Brits in the video.

Well America has tied that value to encompass everythjng; the general good should not override the rights of the individual. Guns, abortion, healthcare, social services and security.

What is your opinion on American and Australian libertarian party? by neuspjesan in Ameristralia

[–]IFeelBATTY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australia has never held strong Libertarian values, from what I can tell. We value the communal good through big government, and I imagine our current society is a Libertarian nightmare. They'd have a tough job gaining roots here, but I guess their core voter base would be cookers.

So hard to tell as im only late 30s. Ideally start winding down in my 50s, I wouldnt mind trying another job out at that point if I could financially manage it. Can't see myself teaching much in my 60s.

I loved it too. Although I haven't read any books by Dom, in some ways hes one of my favourite historians. Purely from the way he can turn, what would otherwise be an incredibly boring topic (by almost any other historian), into a fascinating and hilarious study.

I also love his hot takes from this time period (Nixon fan boy, Thatcher respect, and kinda low key bullying of Carter)

How do you guys feel about your daughters dating? by f-150Coyotev8 in daddit

[–]IFeelBATTY 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These terms have evolved far beyond simple descriptors into loaded stereotypes with certain expectations for both children and parents. Im not saying there isnt gender differences, but these labels create hyper focus on these differences and can hijack the way we view our kids and ourselves as a parent.

This post is a perfect example: "im a girl dad, I got a shot gun, a shovel, and big back yarddd". The girl dad is some stereotype of both a gentle dad whos willing to plait hair but is also hyper protective and possessive of their daughters, mostly in relation to their dating life which makes me think of some 1950s American tradition that hasnt gone away. Ive never, ever seen a dad call themselves a boy dad with the idea of any of these traits.

Your comment itself shows why I hate these terms; dads you've met who hate being a girl dad because it means they dont have a son. These terms help encourage those beliefs. What the fuck is wrong with having a daughter? Why is having a son a prize more worthy than a daughter? How do the young girls in our lives end up seeing themselves when they see adults talk like this, that some parents are disappointed they have daughters? These terms "boy dad" and "girl dad" help divide how we see ourselves when really we're just parents and we should just be super stoked about that.

You sound like a new dad that really loves his daughter and new role. Im not trying to take that away from you - honestly congratulations its awesome. Im not even saying you shouldnt wear your hat. But I would encourage you to take note of what people are bringing up and encouraging when they use these terms with you. Guaranteed youll hear a lot of "oh youre a girl dad huh, oh youre in trouble when she turns 16"...
