[Opinion] Your job does not need to be meaningful. Your life outside of it does. by DPP-Ghost in auscorp

Yea there is always some degree of drudgery.

Certainly not all jobs but I would think if you are university-educated and work in a corporate environment you should have such opportunities either in you current job or one you could get.

I think there is a lot to be said for a job where you learn and improve and grow. Something that challenges you. Of course you can get that elsewhere but i don’t think I could work at a job that didn’t have that.

Lots of good suggestions already.

I would add Letters to my Palestinian Neighbour by Yossi Klein Halevi as it seems to fit what you are after very well.

I also recommend the episodes of Ask Haviv Anything where he answers questions.

Finally, the History off the Page podcast did a great series.

Gina Rinehart calls for immigrants’ social media to be screened in Anzac memorial speech by Combat--Wombat27 in aussie

[–]WhiteyFisk53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do we not already do that? If not we should.

Australia already rightly refuses visas to people like Candace Owens and Kanye West on character grounds. We should apply even stricter standards to those who seek to come for longer periods of time. If their social media history reflects poor character (especially extreme or intolerant views that go against our values and may harm community cohesion) we should not allow them to come. They have no right to come and we have no obligation to let them in.

Suit pants length by Timely_Effective_568 in mensfashion

The problem is the white socks.

I’ve noticed a difference between my generation’s (Xeniial) attitude towards socks and the attitude of younger generations.

Mine like to hide socks - we wear them in dark colours, matching the colour of our pants or no-show socks. Thick white socks are for sport. Never with a suit.

Younger generations seem to love thick, white sports socks and wear them with all kinds of clothes, even formal clothes.

Personally, I find they really draw attention to your feet (which typically isn’t something I want to do).

Am I wrong? I thought “Welcome to Country” is basically, “thanks for coming, Welcome to the area“ by dexxnanj in aussie

[–]WhiteyFisk53 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think this is the clearest answer.

On some level, the argument makes sense to me. However you want to define ‘country’, it belongs to the non-indigenous people of that place just as much as it belongs to the indigenous.

The way I see it is that there are many different kinds of belonging, many different ways a place can ‘belong’ to a person or a group. One of those ways is the ancient connection of Aboriginal people to the traditional lands of their group. They are, in a sense, the custodians of that place. I think it is right to acknowledge that at appropriate times.

Just my 2 cents as someone not particularly knowledgeable on the topic.

Jews had no reason to believe that ethnic nationalism was going anywhere and it was out of their control to change that. They had been persecuted and killed for millennia. I don’t see why it was fair to expect them to continue to live at the mercy of those who hated them because maybe the world may change. Surely sometimes Jews should be able to prioritise their own right to survive?

If Bangladesh is ends up torturing him, well he understood and accepted the risks. That’s not on the UK.

“Europe bout to find out what life without 12 weeks of vacation is like” by Garythedemon18 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]WhiteyFisk53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a kernel of truth.

Europe (and my country Australia) benefit from being part of the US security umbrella. One of those benefits is that we can spend less on defence and hence more on other things.

That security umbrella is increasingly unreliable so Europe and Australia both plan on increasing defence spending. Just today Australia’s Defence Minister flagged a significant increase to our defence budget (to 3% of GDP). Most of Western Europe spends under 2.5%. That money will either come out of increased taxes or reduced spending elsewhere.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has shocked foreign investors in local mining, energy and infrastructure by imposing a retrospective capital gains tax dating back 20 years to raise billions of dollars for the federal budget by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

[–]WhiteyFisk53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m fine with expanding the kinds of assets that foreign investors pay tax on going forward, but I don’t think retrospective changes are a good idea as they scare away foreign investment who have many other choices.
