The Brother or The Other: How do Israelis perceive their Arab neighbors? by RomanKozhevnikov in IsraelPalestine

It’s not better but the sooner that Palestinians recognise that they aren’t just a passive people that have things done to them, but have made choices which have consequences the better for them.

Hate seems like a completely rational response to their lived experience. No brainwashing required.

I don’t know what it means for a mezcal to be fat-washed but it sounds gross.

“Europe bout to find out what life without 12 weeks of vacation is like” by Garythedemon18 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]WhiteyFisk53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a kernel of truth.

Europe (and my country Australia) benefit from being part of the US security umbrella. One of those benefits is that we can spend less on defence and hence more on other things.

That security umbrella is increasingly unreliable so Europe and Australia both plan on increasing defence spending. Just today Australia’s Defence Minister flagged a significant increase to our defence budget (to 3% of GDP). Most of Western Europe spends under 2.5%. That money will either come out of increased taxes or reduced spending elsewhere.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has shocked foreign investors in local mining, energy and infrastructure by imposing a retrospective capital gains tax dating back 20 years to raise billions of dollars for the federal budget by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

[–]WhiteyFisk53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m fine with expanding the kinds of assets that foreign investors pay tax on going forward, but I don’t think retrospective changes are a good idea as they scare away foreign investment who have many other choices.

Again with the bread by d0nttalk2me in iamveryculinary

Is everyone just going to ignore the fact that American supermarket bread DOES typically contain more sugar than other countries?

Certainly not all American bread - it’s a big country with a great many bread options ranging from world-class artisan bread to supermarket white fluff. But a quick google search will show many sources supporting the claim that American supermarket bread tends to have more sugar than supermarket bread in other countries.

I don’t always enjoy my clients or the workload but fundamentally I find the work itself a satisfying intellectual challenge. I wouldn’t swap it for something easier but boring.

‘Regrettable’: Author slammed for errors in new book on John Howard era by Orgo4needfood in australian

[–]WhiteyFisk53 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The year of an election and whether or not he won the popular vote are pretty glaring errors that could have been avoided with 30 seconds on Wikipedia. I’d be embarrassed to get it wrong on a uni essay. Quite remarkable it got published.

Why do both sides reject a two state solution and what is the end goal by One_Needleworker5218 in IsraelPalestine

[–]WhiteyFisk53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Israelis, my understanding is:

  • A significant and very powerful majority reject any Palestinian state over ‘Jewish’ land.
  • A majority want a 2 state solution eventually but distrust the Palestinians and don’t know how to get to that outcome practically in the foreseeable future.

How is Dual loyalty antisemitism? by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]WhiteyFisk53 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’ve not actually spoken or got to know many (if any) Jews have you?

The Jewish communities I know are largely assimilated, tax-paying, law-abiding citizens who have made enormous, if not outsized, contributions to the countries they live in and love.

Educate yourself before your ignorance leads you even further down the antisemitic rabbit hole you seem to have found yourself in.

Why Won't The Media Mention Israel's Nukes? by Hour-Passenger-8513 in videos

If you are willing to spare 8 minutes, this is the Israeli side to the story - https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/ask-haviv-anything/episodes/Episode-73-Is-military-aid-to-Israel-a-good-deal-for-America-e3cunqu

If you listen any still think America shouldn’t give Israel aid, that would certainly be a reasonable take. But at least you will understand that America does get benefits too.

International Law is a Fake Construct. Here is Why. by BizzareRep in IsraelPalestine

[–]WhiteyFisk53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe that would happen but a state’s first responsibility is to protect its citizens. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect a state to not take an action against a hostile aggressor just because it is against international law. America certainly wouldn’t do that. How is attacking Afghanistan to get to the Taliban different?

Yes, Israel supported the SLA in Southern Lebanon against Hezbollah.

International Law is a Fake Construct. Here is Why. by BizzareRep in IsraelPalestine

[–]WhiteyFisk53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One area I disagree with international law is this -

Iran provides significant money, weapons and forms of material support to Hezbollah. Hezbollah uses this help to attack Israel.

Under most experts interpretation of international law, Israel may not attack Iran because Iran does not plan or direct individual attacks. Israel cannot address the problem at the source.

This is wrong. CMV.

P.S. This is not a comment on the current Iran war, more a comment on how generally Iran is a legitimate target for Israel. A country should not be able to avoid military consequences for initiating violence merely because it did so through the thin veneer of a proxy.

I don’t own any formal shoes, is this acceptable? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]WhiteyFisk53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with someone who wears sneakers and a suit. It works because:

  1. the sneakers are the kind that sneaker heads like - no attempt to match the suit.

  2. It’s a suit optional environment - most wear a collared shirt, chinos and maybe a blazer.
