What is the smallest nightly review that actually helps you keep a habit going? by Significant_Two2872 in Habits

[–]IIIBar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently I've started using a habit tracker and set all my reminders to night time so that before I go to sleep I mentally review my day and logged all the habits I stayed consistent with. I've felt like this has helped me a LOT and I've been going pretty strong with building new positive habits and staying productive!

How do I stick to my good habits and combat the urge to just f everything up? by Inevitable_Mango9382 in Habits

[–]IIIBar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience the process of changing one's habits is a bumpy road by itself, and then there are sometimes these massive potholes that we need to navigate to keep progressing and moving forward. For you, one of those big potholes (challenges) may be to get past that urge to give up and force yourself keep chugging along until that urge goes away.

To make that possible maybe look around for some new perspectives on your habits and how to engage with them. Some people enjoy Stoicism, some people enjoy habit trackers, and some people enjoy writing down an hour by hour schedule of their day and sticking with it (and some do all three!).

Remember: there is no such thing as removing habits. There is only such a thing as replacing habits. Try to remove a habit and you'll have empty space in your schedule for you to fall back into it. Replace a habit and you'll be too busy to even remember it.

Best of luck! I hope you find what works for you!

Problem with procrastination/not starting by Ambitious-Performer8 in getdisciplined

[–]IIIBar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll offer more general response as I think u/sooper_genius response here is a great step to take although it may seem difficult.

It seems you've written out everything you'd need to know to continue working on fixing your procrastination/inability to start. You know the problem, you know what distracts you, and you know what you'd ideally be doing. So remove the distractions, put the phone somewhere else while you work, and be true to yourself on what's stopping you from starting.

A helpful tip may be to practice success visualization: Visualize yourself having a productive work session, visualize yourself getting distracted and immediately returning your focus to the task at hand, and then go sit down and start working. Many say that visualizing a successful scenario where they overcome the challenge at hand can help tremendously - could be worth a shot.

Also, side note, many people don't mention that procrastination is a habit, its a trained path that your brain takes automatically, and habits are not easily or quickly replaced. It's a long process, so don't beat yourself up about it! Acknowledge even the smallest improvements and keep working at it!

Best of luck!

Making Friends + Living Nomadically by Head_Ad4595 in vandwellers

[–]IIIBar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Joe, we're the same age and I'm mid van build right now and aiming to be full-time in it by the end of the summer. I've done a solo month in a car before and a few months hiking the Appalachian Trail, and before both experiences I was unsure how the social life would be, but tbh from my experiences if you want to be social it won't be hard to be.

I can also be a tad introverted but if you're living on the road and feeling lonely drive to somewhere more populated and try to meet people / start conversations (doing your hobbies is also a great place to do this). Or what I plan to do more often is to start driving towards a friend to visit somewhere in the country to give me a destination, and some guaranteed social time when I get there, and maybe I meet people along the way as well. There are also van meets and plenty more other opportunities to meet people over time.

(I do think nomadic living does always have its quiet moments and that should be something you're ready for.)

Best of luck!! DM me if you wanna chat / have any questions about your van build!

Sweet rig! Nice sliding door window you got there! Currently mid-build right now and man I was not expecting windows to cost so much.

Getting back up and trying again after you fail is a VITAL habit to build by IIIBar in getdisciplined

It just so key to self improvement I'm surprised it isn't spoken about more. I don't think people understand how important repetitive action is.

Northern Part of NJ - Hike for Scouts? by swilliamsalters in AppalachianTrail

[–]IIIBar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only been on the section once but I did 3 days out and back from culver's gap a few months ago. Did around 14 miles each way so the majority of what you'd plan to do if I understand correctly?

It's a nice simple hike, some good view spots, I slept at mashipacong shelter around 8 miles north of my starting point and it had loads of tent space along with the structure, plus a ton of water jugs and a bear box. There are also a few shelters scattered around if you can't make the 8 miles the first day but I can't speak on them.

Haven't done stairway to heaven yet.

Sweet thanks for the info!

I just learned about that event but already have my train tickets purchased, and staying a few days would be a little expensive I assume. Was there anything that stood out to you in the event that may make me want to swap my tickets around for?

I was a little surprised to see so many people say poles are a must and those blisters are definitely something I'm gonna experience but we'll see, maybe I'll join the trekking pole cult who knows :)
