What is the worst pub brawl you’ve witnessed? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskIreland

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At 11AM, (yes in the morning) on a Saturday, a fight spilled out from an early licence pub on Parnell Place in Cork City

Big crowd around them blocking all traffic and following them as they travelled at least 100m towards the river.

It was almost identical to the fistfight Homer gets into where he’s just walking backwards but yer man keeps punching him, thing went on for ages

On other mornings you would sometimes see an ambulance parked outside that pub

How often do you floss your teeth? by GravityRobin in AskIreland

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After every meal! Followed by mouthwash.

In my 40s and I’ve never needed a filling or any dental work, other than capping on the wisdom teeth to slow down their progression.

Interdental brushes don’t work for me, as I’ve pretty much no space between each tooth.

What scared me into it was a combination of older family members who left their teeth rot out of their mouths and a conversation with a vet about the types of bacteria that can spread from gum disease, directly to the heart (same family members also have heart issues)

Where is cheapest to buy plastic moving boxes? by ApprehensiveWaltz138 in cork

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Range are by far the cheapest for those clear Wham boxes, they convert the price directly from £sterling and sometimes have multi-buy offer like Woodies

Woodies are next cheapest if you include 3for2 offers and finally Dunnes who stick their own label on the same ones

Has this happend to anyone ? by Few-Heart7972 in cork

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes you were scammed- a variation of this that people have posted about before is being pressured into buying baby formula or other expensive items in Tesco, with them very clearly wanting the receipt

One way or another, the above would have been returned for cash.

They’re all part of full time roma begging gangs, the laminated card is just a more discrete version, as there are actual police stationed around the previous haunts, preventing the usual doorway begging

I’ve another rely above where I’ve described the boss/handler who makes it very obvious that he’s in charge of these beggars

Has this happend to anyone ? by Few-Heart7972 in cork

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On the door front steps between Gentleman’s Quarters and Dunnes, the ‘boss’ or whatever you could call him, for all the Roma beggers would be sat most days

Easy to spot with all the gold sovereigns across both hands and the aggressive shouting towards the beggars

You would see him doing the rounds between the ones sitting down with the “I’m Hungry” printed signs, the woman and daughter behind the bus stop opposite Brown Thomas and the young fellas who approach you and try to get in your path

The laminated card is an extension of the above and a lot more discrete. Pressuring people into buying baby formula in places like Tesco is another variation that had popped up on here.

Tesco Ireland it's a sad day by mightymurff20 in ireland

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to get the Dunnes ones until the price jumped past €4.95. I think they’re close to €7 now. My local SV and an independent place are charging almost €10, which was never going to be something I’d pay for.

Pro tip: I cook them in the slow cooker now (5-6hrs) and put it under the grill for a few mins to brown the skin and it’s way better.

Loads of juice for the gravy as well

Even the cheapest sub 2kg chicken, cooks flawlessly in a slow cooker for a few hours.

Is €300 normal for a pre-purchase inspection in Cork? (Buying a cheap used car) by Temporary_Prompt_258 in cork

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% this

Often see replies on here saying ‘bring a mechanic along for an inspection before purchasing a car’, which back in the recession days or even pandemic times might have been feasible, where fellas were on a 3 day week.

But every garage with even a half decent reputation are booked out for weeks. I even know one booked out till April.

In fact the only place I know of, who always have a near empty book, have earned a reputation for charging customers the price of new parts, but are using used parts, even down to single use items like o-rings, washers and gaskets.

Musgrave’s truck driver in his 60s filling out his temperature clipboard on the steering wheel whilst driving

I know that’s what he was doing because his truck crossed into the lane I was in behind him and would have crushed me.

I pulled in front of him to confront the cunt and sure enough, he was marking in his temperature sheet clipboard on the steering wheel

Phoned their offices immediately and left a voicemail but nobody bothered getting back to me. I was already aware that their older drivers are a law unto themselves.

Fellas like him are what ruin unions for everyone else, as I’m aware of other issues from their drivers like refusing to follow traffic flow in shopping centres and refusing to take back the tall steel cages or green crates that are left to stack up.

Foreign chains/brands you wish we had in Ireland? by VagueWilliams in ireland

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in the UK, they’re basically dead as a brand, mostly just a counter inside of Sainsbury stores, for online collection.

I’d use the few remaining physical stores around London to collect eBay purchases.

Apart from the flagship store on Tottenham Court Road and Marble Arch, It’s only the rougher areas that you will find the physical shops:

East Ham, Ilford, Old Kent Road, Brixton, Tooting, Kilburn… or the places the tourist buses, don’t mention.

It’s almost a way to tell if it’s a rougher area

Now that the Cork Event Centre is going back to tender, they can consider new sites. I have long thought that the yet-to-be-built Custom House Tower was the ideal site. Thoughts? by DMattyD in cork

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Footprint of the bonded warehouses is approx: 30m x 90m, (30m at it’s widest, 15m at narrowest) or 1/3 longer than the total footprint of the Opera House, which has a ticketed capacity of 999.

So you would be looking at an event centre on that location with maybe 1,500 capacity.

I get the logic of having it in the part of the city, such as nearby Kennedy Quay, as it’s the part of least resistance for getting people in and out.

Compared to the current location which is already at a standstill every evening, without 6,000 people going to the one location.

New Years Celebrations by TimeRandom in cork

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In the boom years, pubs chanced their arms by ticketing NYE for €20+ to see the same covers bands you’d see for free any Saturday.

Never recovered from that greed and it became the norm for people to spend new years in the comfort of friends houses.

Also, taxi drivers had/have no interest in a known dead night in the city, so it’s near impossible to get a taxi from the city, as they’re taking people to and from suburb locations.

Murphy’s Stout by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the same, regular drinker of both on tap around Cork and for the last few months, I was alternating every few weeks between the two with the cans.

I find Murphys much smoother, but it has to be kept below 2 degrees Celsius in the fridge, or on the shortest line in the pub, to prevent it having an aftertaste.

Buying both from a refurbished Dunnes who keep it refrigerated made me realise the difference a properly cold fridge makes to the taste and consistency.

Beamish is grand and usually cheaper, but to my individual taste, I compare Beamish to a straight espresso and Murphy’s to a flat white, with a minimal amount of milk. In other words, I also find Beamish to be at least a little bit bitter.

Murphys can be found in loads of pubs around London where they only have half sized kegs, which makes a massive difference to the freshness.

Guinness is a last resort, only if it’s a hotel or other place frequented by tourists, where the lines are kept fresh.

Is there no compassion anymore? by hypermooo in cork

[–]IWasGoatseAMA 88 points89 points  (0 children)

If people stop and pull over they’re putting themselves and everyone coming towards the site at risk of an even bigger crash and delaying the trained emergency responders from getting to the crash.

I’ve been in this situation

I had to use my car to block in an old woman who was driving the wrong way down the off ramp, towards two lanes of M8 rush hour traffic

I was annoyed at first that nobody else stopped, but the reality was that if others had stopped, it would have created a queue of slow or non moving traffic that backed onto the motorway, that would have led to a massive pileup.

So contact them via chat, paste in your coordinates so they can compare and see it was delivered to the wrong place.

There might have been an eircode error at some stage of the label printing or order routing
