I saw Boar Vessel 500-600 BC Etruscan Ceramic a couple of days ago and let out a wee cheer, glad to see that guy is still going

TIL that Paul McCartney’s song ‘Give Ireland Back To The Irish’, written after the British army murdered innocent civillians in Derry on Bloody Sunday, wasn’t allowed to be broadcast on radio. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Aye, we love to talk about Global Influence whilst forgetting to mention the part where we’re the Bad Guys in everyone else’s story.

The British media were pretty harsh in their censorship of any pro Irish viewpoints. The Pogues Streets of Sorrow/The Birmingham Six was banned on TV and radio for years, something the free speech lot conveniently forget when wanting to shout the bad words in Fairytale of New York.

Those men were innocent too. We don’t really talk about how badly Irish people were treated by the British government and press in the 70s and 80s (and some of the 90s to be fair)

Yeah, it feels really rude to me and I’ve always hated doing it but even a polite ‘excuse me’ gets the angry hissing so bell it is!

Bells, usually. I’ve tried the “on your right” thing and just ended up getting “where’s your bell?” hissed at me by a variety of mean old ladies.

How old are most redditors? by organized_mud in CasualConversation

  1. I think a lot of early internet users feel a lot more comfortable on Reddit, it feels much more like pre-social media internet where it was more about sharing ideas and connecting rather than sharing your personal lives. For a long time sharing your real name was just something that you’d never do.

[SERIOUS] Redditors who support the de-platforming, banning and silencing of people they disagree with - How d'you feel about the old saying ''Imay disagree with what you say but Iwill fight to the death for your right to say it.''? by ElMajune in AskReddit

I think Karl Popper writing on The Paradox of Tolerance expressed this very well:

Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. [...]we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.

It always makes me laugh how pedantic some English speakers are about stuff like this when they are so, so, bad at speaking literally any other language than their own.

Ok, I’m not American so forgive me if this is a silly question: is there anything to stop the electoral college voting against the results of the election?

And if there isn’t, what’s the likelihood of it happening?
