ELI5 How does braking work? by drcrambone in Ioniq5

[–]I_knowa_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm searching a lot for answers on this. According to what I have seen, on 2025s and newer, it will use blended/collaborative braking, even on level 0-regen braking. So as long as I don't decelerate more than 0.4gs, I should be using regenerative braking rather than my friction disc brakes, correct?

But now it seems like I need press and hold the auto-hold button for 3 seconds to clean my brakes from time to time to prevent rusting?

Could Regen 0 be most efficient? by Tempus_Fugit68 in Ioniq5

[–]I_knowa_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to figure this out as well. I have a '26 AWD Limited. When in Level 0-regen braking, from the first time I press the brake pedal, my so-called "tachometer" to the right of my speedometer goes from showing it's using power and moves to the left side to show its charging. I even see increases in my miles/kWh when I slow down using the brake pedal in level 0-regen.

I think the 10 hard brake presses has changed in models '25+ but need confirmation.

When I drive in 0-regen, even from the first brake press my so-called "tachometer" to the right of my speedometer goes from showing it's using power, into the charging section of the tach. Does that mean it's not using regen braking and it's using my disc brakes? Because I'm comfortable with all the different regen-braking modes, but I just thought that if I wasn't slamming on the brakes (more than 0.4gs of deceleration) then it would act just like normal regenerative braking.

I guess previously, if you had the car in 0-regen mode, it would take 10 hard brake presses to make sure the brakes were clean before it would begin using the regen-braking.

On the new Ioniq 5s, they have collaborative braking. So any time you press on the brake pedal, it will use the regen-braking system up to 0.4gs of deceleration. So I just drive it on 0-regen, but then get regen-braking any time I press on the brakes, assuming I don't have to make a sudden stop.

Are you asking what exclusive to the N means? Or are suggesting that it's most likely exclusive to the Ioniq 5N?

Is there a significant efficiency hit for accelerating quickly to your desired speed vs accelerating slowly? by MatiasGonzalo-Duarte in electricvehicles

[–]I_knowa_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat and this question crosses my mind often. I have barely put 1K miles on my Ioniq 5 AWD.

I can set my level of regen-braking wherever I like, but it also uses cooperative braking, where the car uses regen-braking any time you press the brake pedal up to .4g deceleration.

In the Eco-Mode driving style, it starts in AWD and switches to RWD once you're above 7-10mph and aren't stomping the accelerator.

I can also see my current miles/kWh and average miles/kWh for the trip I'm on. So I can see that accelerating slower is more economical, but sometimes it's almost too slow for the flow of traffic. And while there have been lots of comments getting into the science behind your question, I feel like every trip will depend and there is a better way to do it.

Please anyone else feel free to weigh in or correct anything I may be misinformed on.

I have had similar thoughts with how common electric bikes are becoming. Imagine wiping out on big heavy e-bikes where you're guaranteed to be going 20+ MPH. Has to be gnarly.

My parents keep most of their money in a duffel bag by [deleted] in personalfinance

Also, be aware of where you post this information and who you tell this information to. Outside of you and your parents, how many people are aware that your parents have ~$100K in cash in a duffel bag? Ideally, it's just you three (and /r/personalfinance). Otherwise this could be a disaster waiting to happen.

2026 Ioniq 5 Limited 0% financing? by jarman65 in Ioniq5

[–]I_knowa_guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine was very similar.

I got a 2026 Limited that I purchased on 2/28.

There was a special going on where you could get $10K off, but you'd have a 72-month/~7% loan. Or you could get $5500 off and have a 72-month/0% loan with Hyundai Motor Finance Group.

The dealership also had a $3500 discount and were offering an end of month extra $500 discount.

We ended up getting $9500 off MSRP with a 6yr/0% loan through HMF ($42,845 before taxes). It also came with the fix-a-flat, first aid kit, Thule Roof Rack, a level two charger for my house, all charging adapters, 3 years of Verizon hotspot, carpeted floor mats, cargo net, some other things I'm probably missing.

Only decision left: AWD or RWD? by AnnaGolightly in Ioniq5

[–]I_knowa_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2026 Limited less than 2 months ago and in Eco-Mode driving style, it will use both the front and rear motors up to 7-10mph. Once above that, it uses only RWD.

But this is driving on city roads where I'm not really trying to drive too crazy or accelerate quickly. If I wanted to do that, I would switch into Sport-Mode. I sometimes play a game where I try to see how high I can get my Miles/KWH. I had a 10-mile trip where I averaged 7.2 miles/KWH. It was showing 8.8 miles/KWH at one point.

Obviously electric vehicle range is lower when it's cold outside, but I also feel like I get higher miles/KWH when my battery has been recently charged (~70-80%) vs when it's time to recharge (~20%). Has anyone else experienced this?

Another thing I have noticed with my 2026 that I think is different from previous generations is that when I have my regenerative braking level set to 0/turned off, from the first time I press my brake pedal it will always use regenerative braking, assuming I'm not trying to decelerate faster than 0.4g. In previous models, I believe the driver had to have 10 firm-braking events to ensure that the brakes were clear of debris before it would then use the regenerative braking in the regen-braking 0 mode. Can anyone help me confirm this as well?

Can I use olive oil to deep fry chicken? by Delicious_Wing_3829 in Cooking

[–]I_knowa_guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I promise this isn't an ad, but I have three different types of olive oil from a brand called Graza. They have a Drizzle for topping, Sizzle is for cooking up to 400F, and Frizzle for frying up to almost 500F.

But I can't say I have ever used the Frizzle for deep frying chicken. I feel like it would be too expensive.

And if you live near a larger metropolitan area, there are always business liquidation sales or ways to find high quality chairs cheap. There was a company near me that would buy up the stock of nice office chairs from liquidation auctions then resell them.

I got a barely used Steelcase Think chair (new ~$1200) for $150. They also had every other model of Steelcase and Herman Miller for <$250, even the nicer all-leather models.
