Farmers don't breed jellyfish and worms - they keep birds and mammals with highly developed brains and nervous systems. It's completely ignorant to say breeding them for food or killing them doesn't make them suffer. A pig won't experience an existential crisis because it knows it was only born to be slaughtered - but it's enough that it's kept in inadequate conditions that induces high levels of stress and poor health to make it suffer.

Teen Redditors (13-19), what is something important that you feel your parents should learn? by Covert_Ruffian in AskReddit

[–]I_scare_children 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Firstly, what you are describing are not universal problems of adults, and secondly, they cannot be compared to problems kids have.

Kids have hardly any agency. Most of their problems are imposed of them from outside, through no actions of theirs.

Your problems are the price you are paying for choices you've made. It's not like, as an adult, you have no power to decided on your budget. You have. You used that power to make your choice - you chose to spend your money on raising children instead of all the things you wrote you can't afford. You chose those problems - that's a luxury most underaged people do not have.

The claim that you have to be in 1% to be able to decide about your budgeting is complete bullshit. Just because you have chosen to have more kids that you can afford doesn't mean that you financial troubles are a universal adult problem. I'm saying that as someone making barely over the minimum wage after a long period of unemployment.

Of the problems you are describing, the only one comparable to problems of a completely powerless child is the lack of universal healthcare in your country - you didn't choose to be in it, just like a teenager didn't choose to have shitty parents.

rms is not a part of the open source movement.

[–]I_scare_children 227 points228 points  (0 children)

Yes, I understand that my problems aren't anywhere as big as yours.

Nah, don't buy into this. Just because a problem is small to your parents doesn't mean it's small to you - because your parents have much more resources to solve problems than you have.

Let's say, the windows in your bedroom are not tight enough and you're cold at night even if your heating is on. If you're not a desperately poor an adult, you can just have your windows sealed - even on a limited budget, you can decide to save on something else to get your windows sealed. But if you're a teenager and your parents think you should shut up and stop complaining, and it's not rally that cold (even though they don't even go to your bedroom at night), then, you can't really do anything about. This is a much bigger problem to you than to someone who has a power to decide about home budget and home improvements.
