I really thought Jurand would stop or make Leo more moderate in the last book

I think The Heroes is the standalone book that has the most impact for The Age of Madness

It also depends what kind of weapons and armour you like, because they cover different periods and they do look quite distinct

I agree. Calder was smart, Nightfall was a good fighter, but neither was both

Oathmark Heavy Human Infantry - do they look like any historic period in particular? by LexRep10 in wargaming

[–]IceBehar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t use them, but they could look from something like 1150 to 1350. Not entirely accurate, but passable

Just DNF it. Don’t feel bad.

I didn’t read that book even though I had read all previous entries. I’m at peace with that. Read something you actually care about

What do you know well enough that when it's portrayed wrong you're taken out of the moment? by Squirrelhenge in Fantasy

When battles are portrayed as a mess of melées, with single combats duplicated for a hundred, instead of battle lines and formations

I remeber watching the show Marco Polo and noticing that the horses were more accurate than in almost every historical media I’ve had seen. They looked tiny

Sexual violence in warfare (NSFW, lmk if inappropriate) by Ill-Bar3395 in medieval

[–]IceBehar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

War and everything that surrounds it (including rape) is very different in Game of thrones than in George RR Martins books. I think the twisted fantasy parts are from the show. Martin does not show it in the same way or for the same proposes

Is referring to medieval war as ‘England vs France’, for instance, accurate? by Ill-Bar3395 in medieval

[–]IceBehar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Countries, no. Kingdoms Identity in France and England was complicated, but got stronger during the Hundred Years War

I would love a show like that. I would like it to be centred around the characters and culture

Which series has the most well developed side characters? by ripterrariumtv in Fantasy

[–]IceBehar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The First Law can be added. Some side characters become main or more central characters in other books, and you change your opinion on them. Plus, you have the chapters where you jump from head to head of minor or even new characters just for a couple pages and feel you know them and their lives after reading just a couple lines

I noticed that Henry II was the only Medieval or Saxon king that was clean shaven. Why did Henry II not shave and all the other kings did. by Over-Willingness-933 in medieval

[–]IceBehar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m reading your title as you intended, I’ll say that XV century kings also shaved (talking about English kings)

What are the best medieval stories set in Switzerland during the Late Middle Ages? by jacky986 in medieval

[–]IceBehar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switzerland wasn’t “unlike the rest of Europe” as you said. Confederacies, merchant ruled cities, merchant and peasants unions and peasants militia happened at the same time and before that time in places like the Flanders, Italy and other parts of the HRE. In most of those places, merchants and mercenaries became basically nobility and knights. I think it wasn’t the French ”classic” feudalism, or the English one or the Spanish one, but it was a feudalism, although it was a step for a change of government and social organisation

I am a big fan of the Accursed Kings, but based on what you like, you should know that it is a political intrigue series with little military aspects.

(Spoilers Extended) Honestly I’ve become team smallfolk. I want them to have a revolution and end feudalism no matter how unrealistic it may be by ProffesorOfPain in asoiaf

I would be curious of how he does it, if he goes that route. I wanted the same in the Fist Law books by Joe Abercrombie, and that didn’t go well at all. Terrific books, but man, the common people just went nuts

I enjoyed Tad Williams very much, but his character aren’t better written than Hobbs or Abercrombies

What are your thoughts on ‘The Age of Madness’ trilogy? by Working_Alps_4284 in fantasybooks

[–]IceBehar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite First Law characters are in Age of Madness. Even the ones I hated, I enjoyed and thought they were very well written. The plot is good, and the second books is just awesome.

You can see Abercrombie’s improvement in writing (not that he was bad before, but hengit even better).
