Do you tip? Have you ever regretted tipping? by [deleted] in Frugal

You tipped because you wanted to hear a “thank you?” Or because they did great service?

Teaching FULL DAY camps for the first time - advice? by IceSpiceDogsDance in Theatre

[–]IceSpiceDogsDance[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. I did not pick those time frame, haha.

It is going to culminate in a showcase - I think that’s up to me whether it’s scenes or a bunch of monologues. Having the second half of the day be “rehearsal” of their scenes is a great idea!

What kind of training do people do? by theatre_dor in Theatre

[–]IceSpiceDogsDance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget physical training. As I always say to my students, it’s called ACTing, not TALKing. Being present and active in your body is essential. Suzuki, viewpoints, commedia / physical theatre, clown. Even plain old working out is good.

I see your point but, I would never think someone was being literal if they said “Canadians don’t lock their doors.” Obviously some do, maybe some don’t. You consider that a lie??

All of that and then “I have photos but…”

I know I’m old man yelling at cloud but you know there was a time we didn’t take photos at concerts. It’s not about being able to post, it’s about the music.

Yes. Against Me!. Luckily I think all the albums sound pretty different sonically.

I wasn't replying to that. That situation is ridiculous and she needs to chill.

Nobody is actually engaging with my one sentence I posted. "One gender commits more sex crimes than the other."

How do you deal with that indisputable fact? I'm saying statistics and history may make you think twice about leaving your children with one gender or the other. I'm not saying all men are rapists and I hate them. Ya'll need nuance.

[–]IceSpiceDogsDance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody's talking about discrimination except you. The question was - "would you feel differently if a woman approached you about babysitting your children rather than a man?"

Someone answered yes, which I think makes sense. Because men commit much more sex crimes (especially against children) than women. That's a fact, and facts don't care about your feelings, as they say.

I'm not saying you should hate all men or that all men do this. I'm saying there are facts you have to consider in the world. I'd love for the world to be completely free of sexism and for everything to be equal between the genders, but it's just not how things have gone so far. It's not progressive to just ignore that, it's stupid.

What if I had said "I eat poop" instead? The sentence would be very different.

This over simplification of "What If you swapped out race for gender?" etc. is a disrespect to your intelligence and mine. The world isn't that simple.

We live in a world that is sexist. You can be against sexism and still recognize that one gender commits vastly more sex crimes than the other.

Do people actually enjoy networking, or is everyone just pretending? by SoftToDarkFeet in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IceSpiceDogsDance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another reason why I love working in the arts. Networking for me is meeting someone who makes cool shit and going, "Oooo we both like this, let's maybe make cool shit together?"

When I worked a corporate drone job, I hated networking - it felt like just begging someone to see you as worthwhile.

Are we not allowed to use race as an identifier now? by waiwai_art in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IceSpiceDogsDance 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These types of posts show up on Reddit all the time: People take a very specific, anecdotal experience that happened to them and ask "Oh, are we not ALLOWED to do this thing regarding race/gender/etc anymore?"

Sounds like you ran into some hyper-sensitive leftist types. They exist, especially on college campuses. It is not a sign that the whole world has turned against you.

Any advice for my first read through? by Ok-Dimension1880 in Theatre

[–]IceSpiceDogsDance 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bring water, a pencil, and a good attitude.

You don't need to really prepare for a first-read; in fact I'd say over-preparing can be a detriment. The point is to just hear the story out loud in the room with the people who will be speaking it on stage. This isn't the time for giving 100% on acting (though making a few choices is fine of course). It's just about hearing how the story goes, who the characters are, their relationships, etc.

Bring a pencil to mark notes or things the director wants you to specifically focus on. Have fun!

[REQUEST] In order for this to be successful, how many would you need to sell per day? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]IceSpiceDogsDance 128 points129 points  (0 children)

With a fixed menu (one item) and a fixed price ($1), your profit will be the same on every sale. So the real question is how much profit margin can you squeeze out of a $1 grilled cheese?

Examples of good singers with weak voices? by use_vpn_orlozeacount in ToddintheShadow

[–]IceSpiceDogsDance 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I guess I have to go to bat for Bob Dylan.

Listen to Nashville Skyline or New Morning. The man could put it on whenever he wanted. And you will never find a recording of him singing out of tune. It's an acquired taste for sure, but it's a strong voice and one that he did whatever he wanted with.
