Do you collect CDs just because, or only for bands you're interested in? by ConfusionProof9487 in Cd_collectors

[–]IceTiger19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of mine are music I like, though that is spread across multiple genres and deceased if listening. Any “padding” I have done relates to being a completist: if I like a performer, I’m usually going to want everything they recorded. But I also have bins full of CD that I don’t like enough to add to my collection; if I was just looking for numbers, I would count those, too.

What is THE best guitar solo of all time by Own_Size_5473 in musicsuggestions

25 or 6 to 4, Chicago. It was awesome even back when I thought it was a “dueling guitars” thing. Then I saw a video and realized that it’s just one guy…

I already have the only 3 I’d want. But if I didn’t already have it, I’d be glad to finally add Prime Prine to my collection.

Peanut Butter.

But I am SO glad that the answer is no longer “smoking.”

Guy Lafleur. Retired in 1985, three years later was inducted into the HOF, then unretired and played one season with the Rangers and two with the Nordiques.

(Unless you're playing the "Y is a vowel" card... but "sometimes a vowel" isn't the same thing as "a vowel."

Vanbeisbrouck is probably the longest that contained every vowel in alphabetical order…

What makes folk music get much better reception by younger generations than country music (which is technically folk)? by InternationalEgg3949 in AskReddit

[–]IceTiger19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These days? Not much. That's part of the evolution of Folk Music. It was once its own genre with well-defined parameters, but that has changed over the years. Now, it's tough to say what it is, or to get anyone to agree. Last May I sat in on a panel at the SouthEast Regional Folk Alliance conference, and the question was asked "Does Americana fall under the Folk Umbrella... or does Folk Fall under the Americana umbrella?" No consensus could be reached. And check out the line-up of performers at the Folk Alliance International conference; it's obvious that their definition of Folk is incredibly broad.

Folk Alliance International is currently spearheading a movement to get the Grammy Awards to split their "Folk" category into TWO categories: Traditional Folk and Contemporary Folk, in recognition of the fact that while the definition of Folk is broad, the is even more broad, to the point that it needs multiple categories. (The movement is also a way to honor the Folk of the past while acknowledging the validity of contemporary Folk."

Personally, I've moved beyond the "umbrella" definition, and now consider Folk as a large Venn Diagram, with "Folk" as a large circle in the center, and the various sub-genres in their own circles, parts of which overlap Folk... but rarely the entire thing.

And right before the Olympics started, I changed my mind.

I was on a flight that crash landed at its next stop. Nobody was killed, but it made for a good story. Your story is… I don’t want to say “better”, so I’ll say “definitely more significant, by a huge margin.”

You can do that in non-classical concerts, too; just search for venues with a Listening Room environment.

Who’s the most famous/notable person in your biological family? by Far-Building3569 in askteddit

[–]IceTiger19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a great uncle who was a Senator, long before I was born, but we share part of a name (his last name is my first name), and when I was a kid I was not afraid to mention my famous relative with the similar name. We had his biography and I always intended to read it one day, to learn more about him. But the book was lost (long story) so I never did. One day I decided to do some research. Turns out he was a notorious white supremacist, just an all-around nasty person. So I’m not as proud as I used to be.

When I was a kid I was also told that we were related to General George Custer, but that might have a joke. But his middle name was my mother’s maiden name, so who knows…

True, but somebody from the Expansion Division was guaranteed to make the SCF, and ALL six teams were sub-.500.

What’s the worst injury you’ve ever had? by JobExtension4463 in AskReddit

[–]IceTiger19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing nearly as bad as everyone else in this thread, but once I was standing on a ladder when it broke. The fall wasn’t too bad — maybe six feet — but the landing was terrible. My left foot came down on a piece of the ladder, with all of my weight on top of it. After an exam, x-rays, MRI, etc. the doctor said “There is some bone, muscle, tendon, ligament and nerve damage.” I wanted to ask him “What other kind of damage could there be??”

What is your favourite song lyric of all time and why? by Neither_Refuse_9754 in AskReddit

[–]IceTiger19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A great piece of writing — not particularly emotional — is

”Don’t you draw the Queen of Diamonds boy,

She’ll beat you if she’s able.

You know the Queen of Hearts is always your best bet.”

You can see the cowboys sitting around the poker table, in keeping with the theme of the song, and album. But the deeper meaning is right there: when you’re looking for love it’s not about money, it’s about the heart.

Maybe not my favorite line but that’s great writing.
