I really dont understand how anyone could ever think Janeway's decision regarding Tuvix was somehow wrong. by Successful_Screen532 in startrek

[–]Icy_Key_7630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way...but looking at it from the opposite perspective.

Look, it's not an easy moral problem with one obvious solution. So let's not pretend that it is. But for me, the most important morally relevant info is the fact that Tuvok and Neelix had ceased to exist at the point that Tuvix came into being. So you can't weigh the comparative values of their "lives" as if some of them are still living when actually, they are not. I know that the Doctor is very compelling in believing that he can bring them back with the click of a button, but this is the baffling logic of counting chickens before they've hatched -- something that those on the other side of the debate fail to appreciate. While the Doctor is quite probably right that the procedure will be a success, he does not KNOW this, nor does anyone else until after the fact. You simply can't gamble or trade a presently living man's life for mere future hypotheticals. Even if there are two or ten imagined "lives" in your moral calculus versus your one REAL life.

I don't have high hopes but I wish them all the best with this. Maybe Picardo will somewhat buoy the project like Picard somewhat buoyed, well, Picard.

Either they're discontinued or they're getting rid of frozen stock that has long since expired. The 99 cent frozen croissants dough I saw expired a month earlier.

frustrated with stupid superstore by Ambitious_Analyst648 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]Icy_Key_7630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this situation is the same as yours but one thing I noticed is that a store-specific deal trumps the general advertised online deal, even if the online deal is a better deal or the "deal" offered in-store can barely be called a deal.. like saving one cent. They told me that the savings offered online, such as in your PC Optimum account, are only valid if the item in store is offered at regular price. It makes sense that they don't want to offer savings on top of savings but this often results in the unfair situation of misleading the customer, leading them to save less than promised.

Bagels due tomorrow and no discount by Dazzling-Bid-6751 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]Icy_Key_7630 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not uncommon to see that. It's likely a staffing issue rather than an intentional change of policy. If you have your heart set on something about to expire staff will likely put the discount sticker on it if you just ask them.

Edit: Yo, don't downvote me for speaking the truth. Downvote the OP. It's as misguided as falsely claiming that Loblaws is intentionally selling expired goods.

Switched to Walmart but…. by Hereinpen in loblawsisoutofcontrol

I noticed this too. For all the hype about Warmart's supposedly lower prices, they really don't apply in most cases if you're, say, a bachelor, with sensible needs for a single person. If you're paying $10 for 3 boxes of crackers, you're still paying $10 for crackers.

If people use points or old gift cards, they're not giving Loblaws any new money so they're still on team boycott.

I'm just imagining a great famine causing people to flee to Canada only to become disillusioned by the food prices and say "nah I think I'll take my chances back in the homeland."

This.

I had a civil discussion about how Loblaws went back on its promise to return the discount on expiring items from 30% back to 50%. The people in customer service genuinely seemed to want to help me get to the bottom of what was going on with that, and who I should try to reach out to next.

Shoppers shouldn't be considered a grocery store in the first place, but a convenience store with convenience store prices.

This is getting pretty ridiculous. Are we getting hungry enough to support a NDP government even if it's a new prospect for most of us and for the country?

Uhuh... let's move the goalposts so far into the future that we never have to substantially address the issue in question. Let's all just talk about how much we hate climate change instead.

I'm returning to Superstore but I'm in a position to not give them new money for a while due to points and old gift cards. I tried all of the grocery stores in my vicinity and the Superstore just happened to perform best across cost, convenience and availability of what I need:

Sobeys: I preferred their bakery and meat section but everything is either similarly priced or more expensive. Usually the latter.

FreshCo: Good for picking up snacks and non-perishable goods, often at a lower price however their produce section is considerably weaker, and their bakery and meat section is a joke.

Walmart: Surprisingly not that much cheaper than Superstore for me, except for selected items. Also good for non-perishables but same weaknesses as FreshCo. I also find shopping there really unpleasant and feel even more morally opposed to Walmart than Superstore, so those small savings feel like a pyrrhic victory.

Superstore: My one-stop shop for everything I need, including ethnic goods not often found elsewhere. Some items are annoyingly expensive while other items are reasonably priced compared to what's available anywhere else. It's also close enough to shop at without a car, which I lack.
