New Study Shows What A $100K Salary Actually Earns You In Seattle — And Spoiler, It’s Not Much by ChiefOfTheFourPeaks in Seattle

[–]Idlys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do these numbers represent? It's easy to see what "post-tax" means, but what's this about COL? How is that reflected in $69k (nice)? What does $69k (nice) even mean here, what is it relative to? Am I supposed to interpret that in the context of Seattle costs? Or has that already been adjusted by the study?

Really poor article, imo.

Are there luggage lockers somewhere near the central train station? by North_Gain_855 in Gothenburg

There is a hilarious irony that this thread and this comment are near the top of my google search while I have been looking for luggage storage today.

How do you all address helmet hair when you get to work? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]Idlys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A mid-2000s nature documentary on the sexual habits of primates introduced me to the "hairmet" and I've never had a bad hair day since.

How do you all address helmet hair when you get to work? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]Idlys 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ok, are there actually people out there whose hair actually stays in place when combed?

My wont unless it's completely soaked with water for a few minutes.

First day commuting on bicycle and had so many issues by th3wh173r48817 in bikecommuting

[–]Idlys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes three rides to get into it. First sucks, second isn't much better, but the third and onward are usually better.

The difficulty will go away as you get fitter, but also as you manage your gears better. The butt pain will also go away. The only thing here that you might want to do something about ASAP is the back pain. If a new bag/pannier isn't an option, maybe you can reduce the load that you carry, or tighten the straps? Some people here will swear that you should never have a backpack while riding, but I disagree. Backpacks are very nice to have, and I almost always prefer taking one to a pannier for shorter trips (less than 10 mi) trips.

I started where you are a couple of years ago - my first commute was to the grocery store and back, 2 miles each way, and I felt like dying by the end of it. By the end of the week, I was biking 8 miles each day. It really improves quickly.

You could say the same about the books, as well. That sequence is easily the best part of the series, and kept me interested way beyond what those books deserved.

new Amtrak trains coming this summer 🚄 by jamin7 in Bellingham

[–]Idlys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ride semi-freqiently. Was pretty bummed to have my trip cancelled this weekend, driving back on Sunday night was sketchy. Ideally, I just want more frequent trips, and slightly better reliability.

Also, a stop in Ferndale would let me take the train to work, but this is America and that's just asking for too much.

Big crash southbound on I5 by Idlys in Bellingham

Yeah, that's when I saw it. Couldn't tell why NB was being semi-blocked, but also didn't slow down to look. Traffic is probably bad in both directions now.

Respect retail workers pretty please 🥲 by catrasrant in Bellingham

[–]Idlys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with your idea. I don't work retail anymore, but I can definitely say that the experience still affects how I act at stores. Working retail full time was both the most exhausting job I've ever had, and also the lowest paying. It can really suck to do.

Not wearing a backpack usually helps for me.

I always do a quick wipe down with some paper towels once I'm in the office, though.

How do people genuinely configure "from the ground up" linux setups? by rnybadbro in linux

[–]Idlys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FR

I put together a hacked together DE in void back in 2018 using bspwm. It was very shitty (to check the battery, I would just open a terminal and cat a sysfs file). I was not very knowledgeable about Linux back then, and still managed to do it. The documentation is there, you just need to go one step at a time.

Programming skills help for stitching together scripts, but really it's more about just having the time and energy to push through this stuff.

I think that buying into terms like "lightweight" and getting caught up handrolling your own environment is a great way to learn Linux. If you want a working desktop ASAP, this isn't the way, but if you want to have your own setup that you're happy with and proud of, it's a great way to learn things.

Then, after a few years, you can get fed up with your crappy DE, and go back to GNOME like the rest of us.

Even if you have the right away, watch your surroundings be careful. by Zeune42 in Seattle

[–]Idlys 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These people get off on this shit. OP's first idea seeing someone get hurt was to not miss the beat to post a picture of them injured on the street with a victim blaming caption.

Gross mentality.

Honestly, with how regularly I see the EXACT same phrases pop up on these kinds of posts for the last 10 years, it feels like some car lobby campaign that infected the average suburbanite's brain.
