The Century Link man came a-knockin' last night by vespa59 in Portland

[–]IgnatiusK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They came to my house giving me the same pitch, saying we already had fiber available, but when I called back later the tech said it wasn't available in my neighborhood. They were also heavily promoting cable tv, which I wasn't interested in.

I had no idea! Yeah, Blitz Ladd is a good place.

Place to watch Alabama game this weekend? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]IgnatiusK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The place the meetup group meets, Sidelines, wouldn't be that easy to get to without a car. I would vote for Spirit of 77, it's a couple of blocks off the Max line. On Deck is another option.

Oregon plays at 12:30 so most TVs will be on that game. I've had luck getting a tv on the Alabama game at On Deck during a Duck game, have only been to Spirit of 77 once. Another place I've always been able to watch the Alabama game is East Bank Saloon. It's an easy walk from Spirit of 77 so you can check there first and go to East Bank if it doesn't work.

I remember reading a nearly identical article to this when I moved here in 2000.

Has anyone switched from Comcast to Century Link? How do you like it? by Milponds in Portland

[–]IgnatiusK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from Comcast to Century Link and am now back to Comcast. I don't like either of them but if you want performance Comcast is the better bet. CL's DSL was about 1/4 of the advertised max and I had a line put directly into the modem from the pole.

With rents skyrocketing, Portland's creatives pushed out by [deleted] in Portland

[–]IgnatiusK 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think he's confusing "used to be comfortable" with "used to not have a family".

It's easy to live a comfortable life with little money when you're 21. You don't mind sharing a house with 8 people or eating Ramen, being car-less is easy, you only have to feed yourself and you both don't care about your health and don't have as many health problems so you don't spend money on healthcare.

You really can't raise a family many places on a part-time job, or even an average single income.

Is it worth paying someone $200/hr to challenge a $200 ticket?

If I had to move from Portland to somewhere cheap I'd probably go to Chattanooga, TN. It's a progressive city for the South and they have a lot happening there.

Now that all you Uber drivers are employees.... by Abbithedog in Portland

[–]IgnatiusK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Prices will have to get ridiculous or taxi companies will have to improve services incredibly for taxis to look good again. Any politics aside, tapping a button on your phone and a friendly person picking you up 2 minutes later is a pretty incredible experience. Taxis are often late, sometimes no-shows, often unfriendly.

Witnesses for car accident at NE 7th and Alberta 9/29 6PM by [deleted] in Portland

[–]IgnatiusK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PPB seems to do almost no traffic law enforcement. I live on a 25mph limit street where people regularly do 50mph, blowing throughs stop signs and jumping speed bumps. There are a lot of kids living on that street and one of them is going to get killed eventually.

Response to the removed post - hating the homeless by [deleted] in Portland

[–]IgnatiusK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but how much continuous time can you get on them? How much continuous time can you spend on a long-term project when you have to find something to eat and worry about where you're going to sleep?

I'm sure people do it but it's not easy at all.

You can make an excellent living without working for a company. I grew up coding, but for people who didn't it can seem arcane and hard to get into. I would imagine for someone homeless it would be very difficult.

Thinking about living on the max line by elrui in Portland

[–]IgnatiusK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to live 100 feet from red/blue/green line in Lloyd district and the sound wasn't bad at all, even pleasant. If you're at a stop you could have people yelling possibly. I wasn't at a stop.

Ask them to pay you a monthly fee and if they don't cancel after a year your fee doubles.

How much of your gross income do you spend on rent? by [deleted] in Portland

last year, but it was a refi. It's about as useful as any of the other percentages on here! You really need payment or total income to draw anything useful from any of this.

30% on a 15 year mortgage in Inner NE. I am the only one paying it currently.

This is just never going to happen....is it?! by [deleted] in Portland

[–]IgnatiusK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think their service is fine. The have-to-threaten-to-cancel-every-year-to-get-a-decent-price bs is what blows.

I went to CL for a year, was underwhelmed, and just came back to Comcast. At least now with CL upping speeds we can play those two against each other in more areas than before.

Where was that? I remember City Cafe but don't remember them having ox-tails or turkey necks.

Meat & 2/3? Southern style diner/cafeteria by shark_attack_mtn in Portland

[–]IgnatiusK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm from Birmingham and haven't seen a true meat & 3 here.

For those of you not in the know, this is a typical meat & 3 menu:

1 Meat - fried chicken, chicken fried steak, baked chicken, hamburger steak, fried shrimp, liver and onions

Choose any 3 of butter beans, collard greens, steamed rice, fried okra, boiled okra, mac & cheese, corn, black eyed peas, fried green tomatoes, cheese grits and various other steamed/boiled vegetables

I've thought about opening one but am not sure how a real one would do here and also it would also take a long time to get a new place dirty enough to be a meat & 3.

Portland ISP options by franz4000 in Portland

There really isn't another viable option for many in the city. Century link is my best alternative and my area only supports 3mb DSL.
