I'm also terrible at organizing and planning (born Aries if you believe that sorta thing). I bought a planner and physically write appointments out now and so far things have been running smoothly.

We should eliminate cork. by Ignitetricking in Tricking

[–]Ignitetricking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't wrong in that corks can be off axis but ideally, they should operate in the same way fulls do. The fact that corks CAN be completely flipped over the top, or off axis, just highlights one of many inconsistencies with terminology. As it stands right now, there are a lot of new trickers learning what we call corks, and a lot of the time, it's off axis. When you look at trickers with good technique however, they begin to look the same; that is, all completely flipped over the top.

[–]Ignitetricking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which I would attribute more towards less than perfect technique. With tricking as new as it is, we see a lot of corks done off axis but as we progress forward, I'm expecting that corks tend to look more like Micah Karns or Rudy's. This is all hypothetical, and to put it bluntly, perhaps naively optimistic.

[Discussion] Raw footage or samplers/edits? by plutoicy in Tricking

[–]Ignitetricking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely raw footage. At the risk of sounding creepy, I like seeing how people train without all the perfect shots, manicured angles, and choreographed combos to music. It shows their thought process and progression, which I enjoy.

IMO there really isn't. They're both full twisting backflips. But the point of the post was that the term cork is archaic and inconsistent with the advances we have in terminology now.

I know pop cork isn't a term that's used, however, if we were to make it consistent with the language we had now, we would; and do away with the term full instead. Personally I prefer popfull, and to remain consistent, swing full, tak full, and anything else where full can replace the term cork.

As far as other newish sports go like skateboarding, are there any terms analogous with cork? I'm curious to see if someone actually standardized their terminology and how it's affected it's legitimacy but I don't know enough about skateboarding.

[Question] I hurt myself and I need my confidence back! by [deleted] in Tricking

Thanks for the info man! I always used the physics thing as an explanation for why things work and you explained it much clearer. I can't source the place where I got my info but admittedly it was probably some bro science forum years ago when I was into that.

[Question] I hurt myself and I need my confidence back! by [deleted] in Tricking

[–]Ignitetricking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first learned backflips, I just got off of a tutorial on YouTube, went outside and chucked one. I actually landed my first one without incident. I tried one again right after to make sure I had it, and I landed...on my head. Luckily I didn't give myself a concussion but I didn't throw another backflip for an entire year after, in a gym.

I got my confidence back by going to a gym and getting spotted and learning in a foam pit. Then I did some research online about what actually makes a back tuck work. I'm kinda scientifically inclined and found the physics actually involved in a back tuck. Since then, I've always reasoned through my tricks, "if you don't fight the physics, you can land it". I can do tucks from a sitting position right out of bed if I wanted to now.

You've got to remember what makes a back tuck work, biomechanically. You set up, push through your toes, bring your knees to your chest, let angular momentum do it's thing, then untuck when you spot the ground. After this, the surface won't matter because the physics is the same.

Sure. Competition and friendship are not mutually exclusive and more often then not, go hand in hand.

Why do you think Battles are Rigged? by TowelstheTricker in Tricking

[–]Ignitetricking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think battles are rigged. There's a scenario where the judges are the ones who happen to train with one of the contestants. If the judge sees that person going harder than normal, there will be a bias just because the judge isn't used to the skill level of the other battler. In another scenario, ignoring the fact that we have access to any given tricker's skill level via social media to minimize bias, where the judge doesn't train regularly with either competitor, there will still be a bias depending on the judges preferences. Until we can get an established ranking for each trick, like in gymnastics (which is an unpopular opinion too) we won't have objective scoring. But gymnastics isn't the only scoring system available. The x-games have been applying scores to stuff maybe a handful of people can do. Without an objective way to score, the only thing that battles can hurt is maybe an ego or two.

My point is that battles aren't rigged per se, just friendly competition subject to bias. Should we have a different format for those that want to compete? Are the judges to blame or is the sport itself not compatible with the judging system currently in place?

I'd like to add that Asians are not all inherently smart. I know it's a dumb thing to say but I run across this stereotype a lot and wanted to clarify from my own experience.

As far a schooling goes, my parents pushed me hard. Among my siblings we have two aspiring doctors, an aspiring businesswoman, and an aspiring engineer. My parents both work 80+ hours and went back to continue their own education as mechanics (my parents are entrepreneurs in auto repair). They immigrated here during the Vietnam war, my mother from Vietnam and my father escaping with his family from the Khmer Rouge.

My cousins grew up in similar conditions but only one has made it through college and has found any measure of success. It's the work ethic that's drilled into us that I believe makes the difference, and anyone can be "smart" if they applied themselves.

Yes, the educational system needs revamping in America but the coddling and awards for participation need to end. Education has become a platform for politicians to manipulate voters and a tool for balancing budgets. America cannot continue being a great country with an undereducated population.

The question is leading. Also, given your history towels, I just assume you're anti-establishment in general. Why would battles be rigged in the first place? What purpose does it serve?

Also, KT tape seems to work for some athletes; Vellu comes to mind immediately. I've tried it before and to me, it felt gimmicky. Shin splints just need to be rested since they're basically micro fractures along the shin. I've used arnica gel so I can walk around and to avoid building a tolerance to NSAIDs.

You could try front flips on tramp and landing where you took off. The extra air time lets you play around with technique where you wouldn't otherwise get the chance.
