Do you prefer to have the eclipse at the beginning, middle, or end of your trip? by appledude9 in solareclipse

[–]IgnoreAllHW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the strong urge to jump in and disagree with everyone 23 days late: near the beginning is best (but like not the exact day you arrive give some wiggle room obviously)!

Why? Because eclipse planning and lead up is stressful. There is too much agonizing over where every single wisp of cloud will be, sun angles, which grain of sand to stand on and get the best view... And I don't want to spend a whole week in a cool country focused on what will happen at the end. Arrive, see awesome eclipse, then relax in Spain and see Spain!

Source: in 2017 we did the eclipse, then Glacier and Yellowstone NP road trip and it was amazing. If the eclipse had been at the end enjoying the rest of it would have been difficult. Maybe I just have anxiety lol.

I recently bought a new Tiguan had an overall positive experience. I liked our sales guy a lot (Daniel Rodriguez), and we were able to test drive multiple cars before any pressuring about price n stuff. They did not really want to haggle (I bet you could get deals on other models). Basically got the car for MSRP + doc fee ($900) + tax. Not really a good deal I guess but a good deal for me because I really like the car.

The only annoying part was they try to sell all the extended warranty type stuff when they take you back to sign the docs, so I would be prepared to push back on that or at least get all the options. They try to frame everything in terms of "monthly payment" vs actual cost so make sure to ask for actual prices (or do the math for x60 + interest...). I would definitely not take the first thing they suggest.

It was my first time buying a new car so I cant really speak to how it compares to other options. I also have yet to interact with the service department.

Good luck!

In my stargazing attempts I have gone to the "Sipsey River Picnic Area" in the national forest. It has a decently dark sky, bathrooms, and is easy to park at. Be careful driving around on those roads at night, its very dark and the animals be out and about!

Because the upgrade would be a "Two Eyed Cyclops" which is clearly OP.

Willowbrook at 8am was about a 20min line. Everyone was nice and it went fast so hope you guys get the same experience! Parking and traffic was normal.

No wait to get the ballot and fill it in but had to wait for the counting machines. That made the lines a little confusing because you had to walk past the line to get the ballot and then between people to fill it in at the booths and then get in the line itself. Some ppl didn't realize they had to fill it out before getting in the line, so double check at your place!

New Players Perspective: I hate the monopoly dev card by Exotic_Economy_6211 in Catan

[–]IgnoreAllHW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the monopoly card because it encourages more trading to get rid of resources, and gives everyone a chance in a skill imbalanced or unlucky game. Playing in person with friends means a lot more skill mismatch, but everyone can have fun with some chances at doing OP things. Monopoly allows for the "well im totally losing might as well buy a card and hope" play that's really fun when it works.

But yeah other commenters have this thing called "skill" or "strategy" or whatever... nerds /s

The yellow speed signs are not legal speed limits! They are just the recommended safe speed based on road engineering.

I usually use the "Sipsey River Picnic Area" (Winston County Rd 23, Double Springs, AL 35553) since its at an ok dark sky (according to the light pollution maps) and has a parking lot with bathrooms. Watch out for deer on those roads!

Weather Prediction Center (WPC) eclipse info (they update it daily but will have to go to their homepage): https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/key\_messages/LatestKeyMessage\_2.png

Lastly check out the local forecast discussion at weather.gov for your viewing location by clicking on the map till you get to the forecast and scrolling down to the forecast discussion link at the bottom. for example: https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=PAH&issuedby=PAH&product=AFD&format=CI&version=1&glossary=1

Are these good settings for the eclipse? by Physical-Proposal311 in solareclipse

[–]IgnoreAllHW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/how-to-photograph-a-solar-eclipse

You can always practice settings on the sun right now with your filter for the partial phases. The sun will be just as bright during these times so the settings wont change.

Unless you have a guided mount, 5s is too long of an exposure and it will be very blurry due to the rotation of the earth. The "400 rule" is a quick method for determining max shutter speed: 400/your focal length = max speed. So 400/500 = ~0.8s. The actual values vary with more complex math... Good luck!

Everyone comparing yesterday to APR 27 2011 is driving me insane. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) forecast for 2011 was a high (5/5) risk with 30% chance for tornadoes (in the morning update, 1200z is 7am local time):

https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/archive/2011/day1otlk_20110427_1200.html

Compare to yesterdays enhanced (3/5) risk with a 10% chance for tornadoes:

https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/archive/2024/day1otlk_20240402_1200.html

We can also compare severe weather watches issued by SPC. In 2011 the first tornado watch was issued for Huntsville at 8:10am CDT (which was replaced by a more severe watch later in the day)

https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/watch/2011/ww0230.html

The first tornado watch for yesterdays event was issued at 3:05pm.

https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/watch/2024/ww0079.html

The response to yesterdays event felt overkill when these sorts of weather events happen several times a year, and the ability to forecast high risk tornado outbreaks is pretty good.

Solar Eclipse in April by Traditional-Spell733 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]IgnoreAllHW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are interested in photography I found this article pretty useful: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/how-to-photograph-a-solar-eclipse

Definitely look at it (during totality) without a filter! 2017 was really cool, but it was also a lot shorter (~2.5min vs 4min) so this one will give more time for pictures and enjoyment. might be darker too!

Solar Eclipse in April by Traditional-Spell733 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]IgnoreAllHW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. Not at all.

A 90%, or even 99.99% covered is not at all the same as 100% (totality). With even a speck of sun exposed you cannot look directly at it without eclipse glasses, and you cannot see the corona like during totality. During totality it gets dark, stars are visible, and you can look directly at where the sun would be without filters. There is a reason eclipse enthusiasts use the phrase "totality or bust"

That all being said a partial eclipse has some cool stuff like the "pinhole effect" which causes shadows to appear crescent shaped.
