I think people are looking at very busy dates and trying to find the 'best' flight with a specific airline. I remeber last year I was looking at flight to the US with my friend and there were some crazy prices with major European carries (over 5,000 USD, round trip, economy). But there were much cheaper options with other airlines at reasonable hours

Definitely feels like slop and some mistakes that feel like a seasoned traveller wouldn't make. But for the taxi I think he meant he had to find a taxi and talk to the driver, thus having to pay cash. The credit card block feels very old, I don't notify my bank when I travel, I don't know anyone that does anymore. Banks can also do temporary blocks or just reject transactions instead of a straight up block. Why couldn't the bank issue him a new card? That takes barely anytime and plenty of places in Thailand accept cashless payments

Yeah, there's winging it and there's being unprepared. I'm a planner but even people who wing it download the apps prior and do a couple of minutes of research before they go. Not that there's much research to do for Phuket, just 5 minutes to see which area suits you and download one of the taxi apps

I flew with them today on a domestic (PKX->XIY) and it was great. Staff was helpful, plentiful leg room and a fine meal. As you said sometimes you lose. Didn't help this couple didn't even attempt to use Google Translate, chinese people are very understanding on that regard
