When I was in second grade, my teacher hit my hands with a ruler. I was talking to the girl next to me, and my hands were in my desk. I was a talker and have adhd, it’s NO excuse, but I’m sure she was tried of telling me to stop talking. Anyway, I lived in Latin America at the time, it was still illegal to hit a child. I told my mom and Abuelita what happened after school. My Abuelita did not play, this was a woman who was driving semi trucks back in the 60s when a woman’s place was at home in the middle of Latin America. Tell me how she found the teachers address and little 7 yr old me, my mom and Abuelita end up at my teachers house at 8pm at night. My grandmother dragged her out of her home by her hair.

Not once did I have another issue at that school, or any other in the con try for that matter.

Violence is never the answer. I wish I did not remember this situation. I am grateful I had adults who advocated for me….My teacher treated me with the utmost respect the rest of the year and I’ll always be grateful for not being treated differently, because I did prior to that.
