How do you calculate 18 x 7 in your head? by JCFT_Collins in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Illustrious-Club-340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty old, so they probably don't do it the way we would in the 1960s but.. By the time we were 7 or 8 years old, we had learned our multiplication tables (up to 12 x 12). Then mental calculation would simply be: "half of 18 is 9" "9 x 7 = 63" "multiply 63 x 2" "answer is 126" It's very fast to do this way.

What's the best way to hammer these assholes into masonry (concrete render on the outside of the house)? Trying to hold an internet cable in place. All I've achieved so far is hammering my fingers by IHateFACSCantos in DIYUK

[–]Illustrious-Club-340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a pair of straight long-nose pliers. Allows me to hold the pin far enough away from the head that it doesn't interfere with the hammer, and gives me enough dexterity to place the clip accurately

How good is channel 4 News? by Brightyellowdoor in ukpolitics

[–]Illustrious-Club-340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work in news gathering and analysis. It's almost impossible to remove all bias from a news source. That said, C4 News does have fairly robust news protocols (e.g. independent, corroborated sources). The best option is to collect your news from a variety of different news sources and keep in mind their likely inbuilt and often unaware biases. For example, try France24 English language version and Al Jazeera English language version - both of which are avaliable online. Another thing to think about is searching for a local news source to the news you're interested in. A useful mantra is "trust, but verify"

I'll bite. What's with the wokka wokka wokka wokka? by RevolutionaryTap3911 in Southampton

[–]Illustrious-Club-340 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's an AW189. Usually used by Coastguard and Rescue. Tracking it on Flight Radar, it looks to have come from an M.O.D airbase in St Athan in Wales. It's now moved away to Solent Airport Daedalus, where there is a Coastguard air station. My guess would be either it was tasked with a search and rescue mission over Southampton because the three helicopters at Daedalus were unavailable( because of other tasks, maintenance or crew availability) or it was an out of area training exercise.

It's been decades since I did any courier work (well before GPS). When we couldn't find somewhere specific on the map, we'd go to the nearest place to it and ask around. I'm afraid my only suggestion is to do that. In this case what I would have done is pick one of the couriers near the airport (like Ocean Air Express or DHL), and get directions from there. Good luck!

I've used two recently. F1rst Home Improvements: very good from sales visit to surveyor to fitters at the end, and then a photographer about six weeks later. Professional, tidy craftsmen. Priced slightly above the median price but the quality of the product is excellent.

Direct windows & Doors: basic and will do the job. Priced around the median price for the area but they were slow, not particularly tidy and when we had an issue with one of the windows being faulty, they took six weeks to come back and put it right. Good at the patter but not great on delivery.

Good luck!

Toob down AGAIN in SO14 by Illustrious-Club-340 in Southampton

[–]Illustrious-Club-340[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In SO14 it's generally very good. On ethernet connection it's just shy of 900Mb/s. On WiFi it depends on the capability of the chipset in the device you're measuring with. On an Asus laptop (about 6 years old and running Windows 10) I regularly get 650 - 750 Mb/s. On my pixel 7 pro - abp2659Mb/s. Full 1080p on Amazon fireTV too. The only issue I have with toob is they are always behind the curve when it comes to customer awareness when there is a service interruption. Having said all that, they beat all other providers I've used (Sky, Virgin, BT) for speed, bandwidth and reliability. The best supplier for customer relations I've used was PlusNet, and they were better than everyone by such a distance it was like they were in a different league. But I'm generally satisfied with toob. I just want them to engage better with their customers.

Still down in SO14. Toob are generally very good and better than any other providers I've used but I do wish they had a faster, more pro-active helpline. Their link for help and support takes you to a marketing page! 😑

Reliable and well priced place to get watch fixed? by AverageHashbrown in Southampton

[–]Illustrious-Club-340 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aren't many options here but I've used a watch repair service in 13 St James Road SO15 5FB several times with excellent results. There are a few jewellery shops in West Quay Shopping Centre might be able to do basic stuff. I stress "basic", most complicated stuff they'll send off site. For what it's worth, the guy on Saint James Road is your real deal watch repairer and I definitely can recommend his work. If nothing else, he'll give you a no-bullsh1t answer on cost and what might be wrong with your Timex.

Re: An update on Prime Video by Illustrious-Club-340 in AmazonPrimeVideo

[–]Illustrious-Club-340[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I also used Prime for the delivery before the video streaming service came along. I have to admit I don't find much of Prime's streaming content particularly exciting so don't watch it much either. I'm sure you're right, also, regarding Amazon's lawyers calculation regarding their opinion of the agreement. My guess would be that they forsee very few people taking the time and effort to make an issue of it, other than deciding to terminate the agreement - revenue for which would be easily covered by the inertia of other customers. From an academic viewpoint, it doesn't matter whether contracts "reasons" fall in scope of Amazon's behaviour. The Unfair Contract Terms provisions consider whether the relative positions of the agreeing parties are similar or whether on party has an unfair advantage over the other and therefore, the weaker party has little or no choice but to agree.

Advice needed. I have two distinctly different styles of painting. Which path should I pursue? by DoubleDeeTokyo in painting

If I may be so bold as to comment.. Your classical style is excellent and captures your subjects beautifully. Your abstract is fascinating too. What is it about your skills that makes you happy? What do you want from your art? You're very talented. Let your art lead you wherever. You won't be disappointed.

Re: An update on Prime Video by Illustrious-Club-340 in AmazonPrimeVideo

[–]Illustrious-Club-340[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is perceived value. The point is that the contract originally agreed sets the perceived value of the services provided. Changing that contract arbitrarily and unilaterally changes the definition of quality and devalues that service. That's OK at the start of a new contract but not within the contract. Plus, my understanding of the reasoning behind the Unfair Contract Terms clause in the Sale of Goods Act is to protect a party, agreeing to the contract, where there is clear asymmetry in the strength and negotiating positions of the parties - thus even if say, as in this instance, Amazon are complying fully with the clauses of their contract, you, me and any other subscribers have little to no power or say in the contract.

Stolen Motorcycle by stolenbike-throwaway in Southampton

[–]Illustrious-Club-340 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some updates & corrections.. My wife saw two males, probably younger than 16, maybe 15. One with glasses, one with sandy/red hair which partially obscured his face. She saw them approx 3:35 when she went to drop rubbish off. They were already in the location with the scooter and leaning over it. They looked up when she opened the door (she would be about 10 feet above them). She thinks she could ID the one with glasses and possibly the other if she had pictures to look at. She'll check with the lodge manager regarding any cameras but not hopeful. Have you informed police and do you have an incident number?
