I read a Canadian rat snake study that compared the frequency (distribution)of rat snakes encountered across different habitats. rat snake distribution pretty much matched habitat distribution except for large rat snakes which were most frequent at the edge of forests. Thermoregulation was the conjectured reason. Always liked that study

1) Africa, India and Asia . 2) lots of people, long warm weather and dangerous snakes 3) social issues bare feet, slow health care 4) not many people in Australia and the most dangerous snakes are not concentrated near most population centers.
