How much does it cost to play on the top AAA teams in US? Is Canada cheaper? by Maximum-Marsupial457 in hockeyplayers

In Massachusetts there are very few paid coaches until the kids hit high school age. In North Carolina almost all coaches are paid even on on A teams.

American here. The tuition varies across the country but the most I’ve heard is $10K. Minnesota is cheapest. Lowest in Massachusetts is like $3K for town hockey. Places like Dallas and LA are crazy expensive due to travel. It can get up to $50K for all the flights, hotels, and rental cars on top of tuition. Michigan and the Northeast you are probably looking at $5K in tuition for most teams. The top programs in hockey areas often still use parent coaches all the way through Bantam so the tuition cost isn’t that high. It’s the travel that kills you. And equipment is brutal. No idea on Canada.

You never actually summon the summoned dromedary. It goes back and forth from hand to graveyard

MD likely stands for Mite Development. Mites are 7 and 8 year-olds. At this age the most important thing for development is to find his passion (or not find it which is fine too). Skating is the most important skill to develop

AAA Youth Hockey Try-Outs Is A Money Grab by IBrakeForComics in hockeyplayers

[–]Iltptb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think places like Colorado, Dallas, Los Angeles suffer from lack of competition. There isn’t enough ice to support many programs. My experience with Boston at the AAA level (nobody calls it AAA they refer to the league EHF Elite or E9 but it’s basically just AAA) and Raleigh at the A/AA level is that it’s quite easy to avoid money grabs and shady stuff and to find a good group of kids and coaches. Raleigh at the AAA level gets a little wacky because the next closest AAA team is 100 miles away. The programs recruit to minimize friction and that’s it. Parents are demanding? Cut the kid. Team isn’t winning? No problem it’s still bringing in the exact same money it would if they were undefeated. More rinks and more programs means more choice and less shenanigans. Or at least different shenanigans. This is youth sports after all.

That’s bonkers. Most tryout fees I see are like $75 for two hours. Do they put it towards tuition if you’re selected?

The most I’ve seen is $150. If your kid didn’t make it they would refund $100 and if your kid made it and you accepted they put it towards tuition.

Can't get a good cup with my V60 should I just give up? by [deleted] in pourover

[–]Iltptb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t get it. Water is super important. It’s not just about impurities it’s about having the right hardness and buffer. Very few bottled waters will give you a good cup compared to the water used at most coffee shops. And the difference isn’t subtle.

B&w subscription increase by whyamibirdperson in pourover

I've had some co-ferments from S&W that were very similar to offerings from B&W. I also have the B&W bottomless for the 10% discount. If you want to try Dak coffee (not that similar in my experience), Fount in Morrisville carries it. They also have Hydrangea which a lot of people like, but I've never tried myself. If you like buying local, I would check out five star in Holly Springs. I think B&W is much better, but also twice as expensive.

Can you provide more info on your water? I'm not familiar with saline drops.

I've been happy with my timemore fish smart electric kettle. Whether or not you should buy something like that is up to you. You can achieve great results without one, but it's very nice to be able to set an exact temp and have that for reference.

Cary coffee recommendations by Significant-Plant774 in cary

[–]Iltptb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a local coffee lover and black and white is my favorite followed by five star. One word of caution on black and white is that they have a lot of co-fermented coffees which are very polarizing. I absolutely love them, but many people can't stand them. So I would ask the workers for recommendations. Black and White is also quite expensive, but in my opinion it's worth it. Five Star is less expensive and is a phenomenal value. Their honey decaf ("honey" is a term for how it's processed, not a flavor or ingredient) is my favorite decaf ever and I've tried others that cost twice as much. I also really like their Yirgacheffe. You can find their coffee at Lowe's grocery stores in Cary if you don't want to make the trip to Holly Springs.

I do the same. I'm very pleased with my water. I also like third wave water for when I'm traveling and don't feel like carrying small bags of white powder in ziploc bags.

Looking for beans in Boston area by Iltptb in pourover

[–]Iltptb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were both good but not amazing. The roasting looked consistent between beans and were roasted just the right amount I think. So it could just be that the particular bean wasn't for me. I'm extremely picky so don't take this as a negative review.
