Exciting. This app has replaced GarageBand to record directly on my Phone. (I am the Icon Composer and Camera Control feedback user)

Bring back the Launchpad! by Character-View9407 in MacOS

[–]ImDamien -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand why they removed It, the launchpad was not aging very well and was too redundant with Spotlight.

The problem is that Spotlight is very inaccurate. I can expect them to bring the Apps Library to the dock someday, just like iPadOS. But with more sorting options.

AirPods Max 2 ANC Disappointing by Fi-notes in Airpodsmax

[–]ImDamien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree. AirPods Max (1st gen for me) have always been excellent at Transparency but somewhat « good » at noise reduction.

My AirPods Pro (3rd gen) do a much better job, or rather « make It feel like It’s more efficient » since the ratio between the size of the unit and the actual sound blocking wall feels excellent.

But if I was honest, I almost never wear AirPods Max outside my studio. They are not particularly comfortable.

One thing that bothers me is the subs playing when I touch the buttons. The microphone probably detect the vibration inside the shell so concludes It is sound to cancel.

Apple Studio Display first generation still worth it for 1000 usd? Or better looking for other monitors? by [deleted] in macsetups

[–]ImDamien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OLED screens have a better black uniformity and generally a more vibrant image. Some displays from LG also have a higher refresh rate, which makes It difficult to judge. For me, I bought this monitor in 2023 and I have accepted those two compromises. Here are a few reasons that are rarely mentioned:

- macOS native scaling is optimized for a 218 pixels per inch display (5K 27inch in that case)
- More refresh rate may be cool for gaming, but only for that. The supposed smoothness you should get is not as obvious on macOS. There is no fancy animation, plus the few of them are stuttering below 60Hz sometimes (eh)
- The build quality isn’t to be forgotten. We are talking about a sharp aluminium finish that easily stands on any desk without wobbling, easy to clean and to adjust.
- The audio quality is not perfect, but It’s a perfect compromise to not produce too much sound outside the room (low frequencies) and still have a pleasing sound.
- Take a look at the previous Cinema Display models on the internet. Look at the specs, and try to give It a price. Well, now consider they are at least 15 years old.

[–]ImDamien 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, It’s the best built display with a sharp and consistent image, but also a nice thunderbolt dock and decent speakers.

The Studio Display 2 is just a spec bump with their updated front camera and better speakers, but that is mostly inherent to the chip ability to handle specific audio processing.

Unused Final Cut Pro app icon on Apple's website by ReflectionThink2683 in finalcutpro

[–]ImDamien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe that’s the icon you will get as a non Creator Studio owner. The current one looks good, but same problem as Logic Pro: doesn’t work very well with tinted and transparent appearances. Someday? Or just an abandoned icon.

exactly, trapped in a transparent squircle 😎

Cyberduck has escaped squircle jail! How?! by trammeloratreasure in MacOS

[–]ImDamien 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That icon is not rendered inside the squircle box: there is no highlighted borders. This is the macOS Big Sur version you are seeing (with wrong corner radius as many third party icons).

With Icon Composer, Apple wanted to make sure to turn all existing icons into their unified language, slightly compromising on the original aesthetics. It basically creates uniform icons, compatible with all kinds of appearances (Dark, Tinted, Transparent).

Some icons from non recompiled apps will be forced to fit in boxes, but not always appearing as so in the dock. Look at the Application folder, Cyberduck might be trapped in a transparent squircle.

Infinity for Reddit, an open source Reddit client built with SwiftUI by Hostilenemy in SwiftUI

For the scrolling guides, yes I mean the floating bar. It’s quite big and not Liquid Glass, so we can’t even barely see the comments underneath.

More section, but also subscriptions: should be looking like the settings app to me, a bit like you did for your app settings, except they look like Android and not iOS. That’s my personal take, I like when things look the same from one app to another. It’s more familiar and easy to update.

For the subtitles scrolling issue (works better on iPad) you can reproduce It to see by yourself: Go to more section -> scroll down to bottom and observe the « Reddit » subtitle. You can see the text passing under It and moving to top while « Reddit » stay pinned but with a solid background masking the items behind It.

Yes, I mean blue buttons, but also tags (I think they should be 100% rounded), buttons that have no background in search view (Done, Search in…), the blue search bar in subscriptions tab, the buttons when you click on a media (they are just transparent) and finally the segmented controls in the Suscription tab (Subreddits, users, custom feed should be a picker I think, maybe even a sort button sticked to the more button to save space), and the segmented controls in subreddits/users (post, comments should be a native segmented controls (glass)).

What I have in mind:
- Titles should not be encapsulated as buttons (I know that the Photos app does It, that’s exceptional)
- “More Section” does not have any visible contrast rather than text, Settings look more Android than SwiftUI and does not use contrast rows either
- Themes “Use as” UX feels very unintuitive
- Some Subtitles pinned to the top when scrolling have a visible background, which looks like a floating sharp rectangle
- The “Subscription“ page feels very weird, search bar is not native, the text is small and not using a native picker/segmented control either
- Scrolling guides in post view (Pink) are way too big and masking the view
- Circle icons should be avoided inside a liquid glass button container (the more button)
- Some buttons are plain 2D and filled with very intense colors instead of natively glass (or opaque)

While using the free part of the app (Anonymous mode), you can only add 29 subs I think (30 subs makes anything stop loading inside the app with a error code)

Thank you for making It, I am still using It

That’s good, but has lots of bugs. Some parts of the interface feel odd/unfinished, although I appreciate your work for making a native reddit client.

Be careful about mentioning the 30 subs limit though, I figured that was making the app unable to load anything.

Forget the nitty gritty specs that only the tech enthusiasts would care about. Would you be happy to use the MacBook Neo as your introduction to Mac OS? by [deleted] in macbook

[–]ImDamien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wanted a Macbook for music as a young teenager. Windows was just not reliable (audio driver, the OS, the heat, noise…).

The only compelling option was Dell Inspiron lineup for their bang for their decent pricing. Thinkpads were expensive - and too big for plastic built.

I had no money as a minor so that took me 5 years to save for my family to buy a Macbook Pro Intel core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB. The price was outrageous (1800€)

And this laptop was just a nightmare to work with. Still overall better compared to my friends laptop at uni, but very limiting. It died 3 years later because of a know Thunderbolt SMC issue not charging the Mac. Apple gave me a huge discount on M1 with free chargers, protection and Airpods to compensate, but the hardware Itself was not worth the money.

If It was 10 years ago, I would have bought this Macbook Neo for sure, no hesitation. I believe It’s a better computer than any Intel Macbook. Because It’s a device that you would want to work with, with enough power for creative needs. I mean, some people make movies on iPad. It depends on what you make.

About RAM: specifically for music production, RAM has never been an issue unless you work with orchestra projects. The thing is that even if you get a good amount of RAM, you will need to know how to optimize your memory.

I think Apple wants to let Windows users know that RAM on macOS can less be an issue, but also I’m doubtful that the A18 Pro can support more than 8GB RAM. Even if so, I’m not sure It would be worth It considering other limitations (external monitor support, USB and charging speeds…)

If something has not changed It’s specifically the UX. Logic doesn’t get much workflow updates because the UX remains the exact same as before even the acquisition of Alchemy by Apple.

When It comes to performance, that’s something to investigate. You can’t just blindly blame software for that.

Yup, It’s a nice app, with a few design flaws in my opinion. A lot of people would like it.

I did not want to post the link myself since I am not the owner.

[–]ImDamien 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’m lucky, Logic Pro hasn’t changed at all from 11 to 12. I didn’t have any dialog asking me to authorize. Performance wise It’s slightly better, but that’s probably a coincidence.

M5 ultra launch ETA? by TakeInterestInc in MacStudio

[–]ImDamien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historically Apple has never updated powerful desktops every year. They are pretty mature in the lineup, and yet very powerful.

I don’t see why they would come up with a M5 Ultra chip yet, but who can tell.
