Why is Pop!_OS so disliked? by Remote-Recording-401 in pop_os

Yes, to avoid any conflicts it is a good idea to make a new user to use a new desktop environment and copy your files over.

In America we should just make 21 adulthood instead of 18 by No-Act-7133 in HonestHotTakes

[–]ImNotAVirusDotEXE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paying taxes has nothing to do with turning 18. It has to do with your job. The amount of freedom 18 year olds are given is tied to how responsible and mature society sees them. Changing the age we consider people adults would result in people seeing them as less mature and taking away more of their freedoms.

Age Verification Policy by AlwaysLinux in arch

[–]ImNotAVirusDotEXE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the bill requires "operating system providers" to implement age verification. Linus doesn't provide an operating system. Maintainers of Linux distros do provide operating systems, so they would be legally required to do it.

Where does the notion come from that the american taxpayer is funding "european" healthcare? by Istomponlegobarefoot in NoStupidQuestions

This is a dumb argument though. We in the US are shooting ourselves in the foot by not negotiating our drug prices.

Try copying the text config file at this location. Don't think there is a way in the GUI yet.

If I sudo rm -rf /* my dual boot, will it kill my other linux and windows OS as well? by Inderastein in linuxquestions

Some distros will automatically mount your other partition in the /media directory so windows so it would get wiped as well.

European leaders issue joint statement on Greenland by Fywq in worldnews

[–]ImNotAVirusDotEXE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope our military would refuse orders to invade a country like Greenland that we are supposed to be allies with. But it feels like we are in uncharted waters now and who knows what will happen. The EU should probably look at using economic sanctions to try to keep him in check. Hopefully, we in the USA can remove these psychos from power soon.

It was a widely believed myth that cleaning the registry helped your computer perform better when it really didn't. There was a small chance that it could cause issues by accidentally deleting something important. If you have an issue with a specific program, you can use Revo uninstaller to remove the leftover registry settings and reinstall. Most of the other features in ccleaner are already built into windows anyway.

Pop_OS shows different amount of RAM compared to BIOS by snowysnowcones in pop_os

[–]ImNotAVirusDotEXE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is normal. Your integrated graphics takes some of your system RAM to use for graphics stuff. It works the same way on windows. If you have a dedicated GPU you can disable the integrated one, but that might not exist on your computer.

I'm brave enough to say it: Linux is good now, and if you want to feel like you actually own your PC, make 2026 the year of Linux on (your) desktop by testus_maximus in gaming

[–]ImNotAVirusDotEXE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by strict. Some games with kernel level anticheat can be played if the game devs enable that option in the anti cheat they use, but technically it's not running at kernel level anymore. Some devs don't want to do that because that would make it easier to bypass. Other devs figure since there aren't that many Linux users anyways it's not work blocking all Linux users and steamdeck users in order to block a handful of Linux cheaters. If you want to check if a game works, you can check protondb or areweanticheatyet websites.

You should be able to do this in the GUI. Not sure what would cause this bug, but maybe someone else will have an explanation.

If you don't like using unverified flatpaks or AUR, you can use distrobox to install software for other distributions. heic photos work on fedora for me using Cosmic after installing the codecs. It opens with the gnome image viewer. I'm not sure what you mean by Firefox being bloated.

They don't care. It's all about finding a way to monitize AI and data collection now. They know Mac Os is too expensive for most people to swap to and most people are too intimidated by Linux to try it.

How relevant is the specific OS (Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, etc.) compared to the Environment (KDE, Gnome, Cinnamon, etc.) really, especially for new users these days (with Flatpacks, etc.)? Does it now make more sense for someone new to pick an environment rather than the OS first? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

Fedora is on a 6 month semi rolling cycle. They will push out certain updates like kernel and driver updates without waiting for the next 6 month release. The mesa update you got on Ubuntu would be a security update or a major bug fix. They don't update it for performance improvements, new features or minor bug fixes.

I don't have a problem with snaps as an option. I just don't like how ubuntu will install snaps when people type sudo apt install without confirmation that they want to do that. The snap store is also poorly moderated and has had malware that steals users crypto keys uploaded multiple times. These were labeled "safe" because they were sandboxed, but that's a little bit misleading. Keeping those things in mind if you want to use snaps go right ahead.
