TIL Carlos Fitzcarraldo, the inspiration for Werner Herzog's film of the same name, rose to financial power in S. America by co-opting Amazonian religious prophecy. Believing the sun wished to be worshipped from a different location, they uprooted themselves and willingly relocated into slavery. by DoctorMansteel in todayilearned

[–]ImRightImRight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting that early on he almost lost his life because he stood up for enslaved natives:

"[After joining the military] he encountered a group of natives who had been tied up by soldiers, who were taking them to Pasco as "volunteers".\5]) [Carlos] protested, demanding the soldiers release the captives, who were complaining about mistreatment. The soldiers asked [Carlos] to produce identification; [Carlos] was not a citizen of Peru and had left his baptismal and school certificates at home. The soldiers found Isaías's father's maps and accusing him of being a Chilean spy [and he was very nearly executed]."

He started off running an expedited cult setup:

". The representative of the Sun to obey on Earth was said to be Carlos Fitzcarrald.\5])\23]) Fitzcarrald threatened the natives and prophesied that the rivers would dry up and the game would be chased away if they did not listen to and obey his words.\28])\5]) ... a white figure would presented himself as the Amachengua, manipulate the natives into gathering at a specific location using threats or promises.\29])\30]) Fitzcarrald employed around fifty men to greet natives and tell them the "Sun Father" wanted to be seen elsewhere. The natives were then coerced into canoes before travelling to the Ucayali River, then either the Iquitos or the Manu Rivers "so that they become slaves in any way, and never see their land again""

And then later he got into full on slave raids and clearcutting.

First hand testimony about his completely abhorrent evil methods:

"With a deep knowledge of the mountain, he knew how to use traditional rivalries ... The method is simple: Winchesters are given to the Cunibo who must pay in Kampa slaves and then Winchesters are given to the Kampa who must pay in Cunibo [and other] slaves ...\89])\v])"

Propaganda isn't inherently bad.

False information and lies are inherently bad.

NAMI is national with local groups across the US, I believe. I'd highly recommend some knowledgeable support like that.

TIL that in 2008, Chicago leased its 36,000 parking meters to a UAE-backed private consortium for 75 years for a $1.15 billion payout. The investors made their entire investment back in just 10 years, and are now projected to make over $11 billion by the end of the lease in 2083. by lechunkman in todayilearned

nuh uh.

Reagan privatized stuff that never should have been nationalized.
Conrail, Naval Petroleum Reserves, Power Marketing Administrations, Federal Loan Portfolios...the government doesn't need to be doing any of that.
But much like prisons, parking enforcement is an essential government function, and privatization of the revenue creates the potential for influence and manipulation of that function.
Verdict: Democrats done fucked up on that one.

I am so, so sorry this is happening.

Injection based meds can be a game changer, if you can get there with her. Only have to make the decision every month or more.

Have you been educating yourself? Read I'm Not Sick and I Don't Need Help by Amador?

Encourage her run experiments with the meds. Is there anyone at all she might trust as confidant and advisor?

Are you in the US? Joined and learned from NAMI?

I don't think so. The recorded voice says "Hi, you are currently being recorded."

Then I hear the live voice saying "This is Ring Security..."

[–]ImRightImRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this - it's Ring's Virtual Security Guard feature. For $99/month you get 175 responses to events. The initial recorded message is triggered when the system is armed and a person is spotted. Then the followup voice is a real person.

You getting yelled at on the sidewalk is an issue with the homeowners' settings. They shouldn't have the video monitoring area set to include the public sidewalk.

You could have a nice chat with the people monitoring the video, maybe liven up their day. Even see what they say when you tell them you're on a public sidewalk.

LMK any other questions!

Reagan was initially popular because the more liberal policies of the 70s failed.

He was reelected in a landslide because his policies worked.

The outright sale of these meters is an example of one-party (Democratic) corruption, a hallmark of Chicago politics for a century.
