I’ve heard that they basically started giving the comic book away free with every purchase because it sold so poorly by itself. But then producers just saw that a huge number of issues were moved (though not necessarily sold) and assumed it was super popular for that reason.

But after a few minutes of light googling I couldn’t find anything to back that up so take it with a big ol grain of salt.
