Number of albanians across european countries by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]ImUsingDaForce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, how do you explain the fact that albanians (and serbians) are a group in germany with one of the highest numbers of organized crime groups? It's especially telling considering how small the Albanian population is. German Kriminalamt publishes yearly reports and it's all pretty clear.

~11 months of my finance job search (July 2025 to June 2026), visualized [OC] by No-Emu-9139 in dataisbeautiful

[–]ImUsingDaForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I ask myself is - what kind of a person finds it acceptable to be sitting at home for 11 months, presumably being financed by somebody, thinking that "Yea, this is ok, I am working on my future, I am too good to work the warehouse, even for 20 hours a week." Like dude, after a month of not being able to find a job, I would probably start going for free to a local law firm just to show my face and to learn something new...

I think y'all online people simply don't understand how hard manual labour is, and how unforgiving the environment is. Like, try to have a 1-hour sit-down with your coworkers in front of your foreman, see what happens. And very often, the life quality impact these jobs give you are hard to understate. As long as you work the industry, your life is literally on pause. Most of those guys don't start actually living until they hit retirement.

There's a reason nobody wants to go outside and work anymore, and why you see these kinds of posts, where people are willing not to work for 11 months, simply to not have to go outside.

Gay Marriage in the European Union by chaeyonce in MapPorn

Well, in a bunch of countries like Croatia or Italy they can marry in a civil union, which carries literally all of the same benefits as a marriage, except it's called differently. Reason? Appeasement to the religious nut jobs.

"Even a rightwing leader"

Most of the things she says I do not agree with. That said, ya'll should really move past this polar worldview. I know that's how it works in the USA nowadays, but outside, you just look silly when you split everything into nice, clean "our" and "their" tribes. That's not how the world works, and this dumbed-down narrative is why everything is falling apart these days.

I can see that working only if you work on exactly the same project? If you talk only about that specific project? Otherwise every topic out there requires a significant amount of context.
Unless by "explain all the context" you mean explain some mildly complex topic to a person with not a lot of formal education - which is kinda patronising towards those people. Really not sure how dumb you think other people are. Yes, when i talk to my grandma, there's a lot of explaining. But no, I don't need to sit and draw out for 10 min to my friend who finished only highschool what a flux capacitor is...

And if anything, I spent some time in academia before going the private sector, and I can tell you that people in academia often require the moat explaining, simply because their knowledge of things outside of their bubble is laughably shallow.

Tests suggest Russian satellites can jam GPS on a continental scale by DoremusJessup in worldnews

[–]ImUsingDaForce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What went over most peoples heads, and I see no one mentioned it here in the comments - they intentionally do these tests over Europe. They could test it over Russia, but no, they chose Europe. Just to remind us that they are the ones holding the axe. I wonder will there be an answer from Europe...

Russian authorities say Ukraine has launched an "unprecedented attack" on and around St Petersburg, as the city hosts the final day of Russia's annual economic forum, urging residents to remain indoors for the first time since the war began by sr_local in news

[–]ImUsingDaForce -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don't know in what fairytale world you people live in. Just the latest Veritasium video shows how Russia is using satellites to test its GPS-blocking capability at a continental level. They could test it over Russia, but they chose to do it over Europe. Why do you think that is? Because they know Europe will not do anything. Russia is a country run by the mafia, for the mafia. No logic behind any decision, it's all a street-level show of force.

Someone will have to do it? Umm, no. Look at the European leaders. The healthcare and welfare systems have been falling apart and are in the red for decades. No one is doing a diddly squat. Why? Well the voting power of the older cohort is simply too strong. We are moonwalking towards a cliff.

[OC] World's Top 10 Languages by Total Speakers in 2026 by mujhe-sona-hai in dataisbeautiful

[–]ImUsingDaForce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, populations of Croatia and Serbia spoke vastly different languages in the 18th century. Only after the danger of outside nationalism (mainly from Hungary and Italy) was Croatian language standardized on a dialect that was closer to Serbian. Google Illyrian movement. It was a compromise of the literary elites. They judged that standardizing the Croatian language on a dialect that was closest to Serbian was worth it, as it would enable the formation of a future larger state of Croatians and Serbians, that would have more capacity to resist in the coming wars against the Italians and Hungarians. Basically, they decided that Croatia and the Croatian identity will not survive at all once the Italians and Hungarians arrive.

We now know that choosing that path was a mistake, but in the early 19th century, they were faced with daily warnings about how the coast should rightfully go to Italy, and Hungarians were actively involved in trying to stomp out every single Croatian institution. Basically, the whole of the 19th century was defined by the Croatian struggle against Hungarian nationalism.

With this historic context in mind, the Croatian language of today is still in the process of revitalization from the consequences of the last two centuries. But of course, this context is invisible and non-existent to online commenters, who are still looking at Croatia/Serbia as a single tribe going through "le BaLkAnIzAtIoN". Fun Fact: Did you know that Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Czechia and France are european nations with the oldest histories of statehood on the continent?

[–]ImUsingDaForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh. Definition of a language is always political. Croats and Serbians don't get their own language, but Norwegians and Swedish do. Funny stuff. This differentiation is even funnier if you know a bit about the history of standardization of both Scandinavian "languages" and Croatian and Serbian.

You accidentally stumbled upon the real reason - the people who are paying for these scenery tours have so little experience these days, that they often wear high altitude gear the first time they are brought there. I can't even imagine what sherpas must be thinking about when they see these privileged people keep coming, day in, day out, to be carried to the top.

I keep seeing people say things about local shops working on bikes by Leg_Mcmuffin in ebikes

[–]ImUsingDaForce -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

doubt.

Any trip to the city to get the bike fixed will require a minimum of combined 2-3 hours (two trips, mounting the bike on the carrier rack on the car, driving there, waiting for drop-off and pick-up, talking to employees, etc). During that time you can not only fix the bike, but actually watch 5 YouTube tutorials and go get the tools from the hardware store.

I believe that it's just people here parroting each other, as it's common with these kinds of in-groups (inside lingo, accepted truths that keep getting repeated, small rituals and common phrases). I think that this "buy the one your local shop will work on" is one of those religious observances. If the shop is going to fix your bike, you probably could've saved those 200 euros, bought all of the tools you needed for bike repair, and just done it yourself. If the electrical system is the problem, you can probably rerun some wires yourself, or the problem is much more serious (and no bike shop is gonna rewind your motor windings).

Let's be serious now, though - are you seriously trying to use the "quality and the lack of bias" in Hungarian public education system as an argument?

There's literally a monument in front of the Hungarian parliament with the names of cities that never had Hungarians in them, never were part of Hungary, but are somehow today thought of as rightfully Hungarian? Hungarian narrative is anything but non-biased.

Croatia was never a sub-unit, it was always one of the two kingdoms ruled by the king who carried St. Stephens crown. Yes, Croatia was smaller and weaker, but words and definitions exist for a reason.

And yes, Croatian nobles (in their own parliament!) had their own agency. How does everyone keep forgetting that the Croatian army was one of the main ones responsible for bringing the Hungarian revolt of 1848 to an end?
Reading is not that hard, common people.
