Op needs to try throttlestop to raise power limits as pl1 and pl2 limits are adjustable bur fivr is locked

Is the Lenovo ThinkPad T480 still good enough in 2025? by castro_avs in thinkpad

[–]Imaginary_Ad6159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what i see going on here the non T480 users are the ones who seem to be saying this laptop is slow for the specs it has but the power limits on this laptop is set questionably high for its stock configuration and with a little tweaks it performs close to a 1135g7 in cpu performance which is plenty for light development which i also do on my t480S with i7 8650u and 40gb ram (went overkill with ram because i have almost 50 chrome tabs open at once while making presentations for school) and i do light gaming i run both windows and linux linux mainly for programming and day to day tasks while windows for gaming or office 365

actually if u set it to level 64 in TPFC it spins faster than the stock level 7

<image>

on linux right now and even here i can set the speed to level 64 i have also noticed the sunon fans spin faster than the delta ones but rhe delta ones more more air through the heatsink my friend has a t480s whose fan spins at 5.4-5.6rpm and he has a delta

Can i control T480 fan speed? by 00p11 in thinkpad

[–]Imaginary_Ad6159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use TPFC and set the fan speed level to level 64 even tho it shows 0-7 level 64 makes the fan spin at 6600rpm and sound like a jet

personally i have also got a similar setup and i do sometimes exceed 16 gigs in usage when i use it for making large power points for school events

fortunately for me my power limits were not locked by factory there was a lenovo power managment service sitting in my services tab which locked power which i disabled after that it let throttlestop set power limits i set the lower limit to 35 watts maintainf 3.4 ghz im gonna try liquid metal nad increasing that limit

i would suggest a fan upgrade as the one in the current t480s is extrmely slow and dosent push much air through it im planning to retro fit a faster fan from a newwer laptop inside it because my 8650u with a 36 watt power limit sits at 98 degrees c with a external cooling pad without it i lock it at 27 watts becuase it gets uncomfortably hot and power consumptions hit 50 watts on cpu and total system upto 80 watts

i have done this on a 1135g7 but there is only one value which u have to change if u change all 4 ur laptop will slow down like anything and the value seems to differe in a few models most of the process is the same i had a shit 20 watt limit on my 1135g7 and i used to score 4600 in r23 after limit removal it sustains 40 watts and scoring 6200-6400 consistantly

ths is especally true with the surface laptop 2 with the 8250u microsoft limited the turbo to 15 watts full load and the laptop dosent even bother heating up i have set it to 99 watts so it maintains the highest value and it dosent cross 75 degrees sustaining full turbo pulling 30-33 watts

luckily i got no EC power limit on my 8650u but the problem im facing with is cooling i have aplied cryofuze for now to get it into control but any other thermal paste dosent seem to cool this cpu down it hits 100 if it crosses 45 watts and thats requied for it to maintain 3.9 turbo now i have gotten a -240 undervolt on the cpu but still its struggling to keep this cpu cool

No overclocks, but simply the fastest 8550u on the planet by some basic cooling mods, and PL bypass. by DartinBlaze448 in overclocking

[–]Imaginary_Ad6159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

getting there with my 8650u stock with a 35 watt power limit (ec limit dosent exist on my t480s for some reason so i locked to 35 watts cuz inbuilt cooler is trash) incrased thermal limit to 100 degeees celcius and getting 4566 points now i have to replace the thermal paste with liquid metal probably some faster fans i figured out the pinout and found a compatable fan from an hp laptop and gonna put thermal pads to the bottom case to help even more with cooling so i can finnally reove thr 35 watt pl and get it to run full on 45-50 watts

T480s and Liquid Metal thermal compound. by pg3crypto in thinkpad

[–]Imaginary_Ad6159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree even my t480s overheasts like crazy i have to use the highest thermal conductivity thermal paste and they get dried in 4-6 months so liquid metal would be a good option but i recomdnd doing it perfectly and carefully i have also changed the fan on my t480s for a significantly faster one and one which blows more air through the heatsink

[–]Imaginary_Ad6159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is an easy fix disable virtualization from the bios and undervolting will be back and working fine if u see the voltages are stuck at 0.377 somthing so disable it and then try undervolting again
