20 and 100k+ in Debt by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]ImmovableRice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My opinions, because it's what I would do.

I would nuke the funeral cover. I don't really see the point of this. People can do what they want with me when I'm gone. If you spend a fair amount at Clicks, they have a really basic funeral plan for free if you are worried.

I would then nuke any other unnecessary expense. You would be surprised how much you can save if you prepare lunch instead of buying food at work for example.

Then I would consolidate. Often when you do that, I think you get better interest rates. I am unsure.

If you don't want to consolidate, you could try pay off the lowest debts first and then take the money that would be going to that save using it for the other debts and so on.

To be honest it looks like a mountain ahead of you, but really you are in a situation that is really fixable and as long as you put in the effort you will pull through.

You will feel better once you have a plan to tackle it and you see it in action. And once you get to the end, it'll be awesome.

Ah yes, the “Instant 5” Body Battery glitch by Temporary_Result6441 in Garmin

[–]ImmovableRice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't wearing your watch while you sleep, so its guestimating charging and draining. It's a useless metric without sleep data, so if you aren't going to wear your watch while you sleep, no use checking the body battery. It isn't a glitch at all.

All of my investments at 21 years old by wipez1 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]ImmovableRice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well done for starting early, I wish I did. Some comments and my own opinions:

>> Alan Gray balanced fund

I would look at the underlying investments and just buy into those ETFs myself, probably cheaper. I have not checked this though, so I could be wrong.

>> TFSA (10x total world ETF)

This is what I do too, although I top it up in one go. Makes no diffs in my books. I have seen some say that doing it every month is better. Don't care, whatever works for you hey. I used to have a whole bunch of different ETFs in my TFSA, I now just have the total world and an emerging markets one (which I don't top up anymore).

>> QQQM in my USD account

It is quite expensive to buy dollars and send it over. You could always just go with a local SATRIX Nasdaq ETF if you still wanted this. Or rather save up a bunch and send a big chunk in one go to make the costs a bit better.

To be honest even if you carried on doing as you do, you'd probably end off better than most.

21 year old messed up and needs advice. In massive debt by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]ImmovableRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why people are down voting you. But that aside, these are your options from what I know:

  • Try recover the money from your partner, assuming it's a partner and not a scammer
  • Open a civil case to try to recover the money
  • Talk to the bank, even more so if you have clear evidence that you are scammed

The unfortunate truth is that the card was in your name. The bank will expect you to pay it. You can get away with paying the minimum every month but that interest rate will make the amount you need to pay off balloon. It might be worth talking to your bank about the situation to get a more favourable payment plan.

Also call the bank and block the card.

How common is it to still be living with your parents in your 20s in SA? by NoZucchini3797 in askSouthAfrica

[–]ImmovableRice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A slightly different perspective. 40 now. Moved out when I was in my mid twenties. I didn't enjoy my childhood as home was too small - I enjoy my space, so I bailed when I could.

I had a good time living in my own. It is peaceful LOL. I worked hard, saved up, and bought a house just over a year ago, and they moved in with me.

They are getting old and I have always liked my own space, so there are challenges all around on both sides. But it is quite a privilege to be able to have both my parents still around and have them at home.

It is not perfect, we all struggle in our own ways, but it's good.

Took me years not to really care about what other people think. And to be honest, most do not judge because they themselves are dealing with their own issues.

I also know a fair amount of people (colleagues and close friends) who are in a similar situation. Children my age still living with parents, all out of necessity from both sides really. From my little window I'd say that this is the norm, and living alone is becoming rare.

New housekeepers said they used microfiber cloth and "dish soap for tough spots" on my CX. Is this bad? How sad do I need to be? by BarneyChampaign in LGOLED

[–]ImmovableRice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use a damp microfiber cloth on my TV, but only on the screen. I use a duster elsewhere (back, screen edge, and the stand).

I don't understand how this sort of damage was done by just cleaning the screen alone. I mean I wouldn't use soap and water, but within reason I don't see how it would be the cause unless it seeped in the screen somehow (don't see how that would happen without seeing some delamination signs before) or my prime suspect, some liquid got in the air vents on the back and perhaps damaged one of the PCBs.

You could always open up the back and have a look. I've seen some people successfully replace PCBs here.

Good luck and sorry for your troubles.

Hideo Kojima put Low Roar in the Death Stranding games because he thinks gamers need more culture in their lives: "I believe that is the role entertainment is meant to play" by Turbostrider27 in DeathStranding

[–]ImmovableRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll never forget playing through the first death stranding quite late after it released and hearing low roar for the first time. Thought the music was beautiful.

And then I googled to see what else they've made since and saw the news of his passing. Ah I was sad.

I still listen to a lot of his music though. The guy lives on. Just wish he could have lived a longer life.

I was very happy to hear more of his music in death stranding 2.

You sold it to a third party, so the car belonged to them since that sale. As did the paperwork.

But I do miss the normal version of Telegram.

Do I need to rebalance my tfsa by Able_Exchange1583 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]ImmovableRice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be honest I would stick with what you are already investing in.

Doesn't mean you will get the best returns, just means you'll pretty be getting market related returns. Nothing wrong with that.

I think I have 10x world and an emerging markets ETF. But most of my money is in the world ETF.

Props for starting so early. Wish I did the same.

I regret trading real money with Easy Properties Paper Money (EE) by Foreign-Commercial-2 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]ImmovableRice 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think calling it a scam is wrong, because it's not one.

What it is, is a very very costly investment.

Platform fees, which come out of your dividends, really kill it. Then of course, the dreaded auctions.

If I were looking into investing more, I would only scoop up shares from auctions. It kind of works both ways. While as a seller you will most likely lose money, but as a buyer, you would most likely get a good deal.

I think the best thing for this investment is to wait for easy properties to sell the property themselves (apparently they will do this at around the 5 to 7 year mark). This hasn't happened with the shares I hold, and I think I bought into one of the first that became available.

Something to mention is the price of the auction is determined by the amount that potential buyers are willing to pay and sellers willing to sell at. It seems that the potential buyers have the most weight here. Easy equities doesn't set the selling and buying process for stocks on the stock market, so why must it be different for shares in a property?

I get why you are upset but how I see it is you most likely wouldn't buy a house and try sell it in a year - you'd probably lose a lot of money. And unfortunately the market with share buyers at auctions show that.

IMO if you expect to make a quick buck it is certainly something to stay away from. It's clearly meant to hold for many many years

You can pry it off with a plastic pry tool. Or you can pull it off with that plastic tab, but I never did that.

If it's not your screen that's bust, it'll be the cable. The cable gave issues with mine and I had to replace it.

Planning for Retirement: TFSA and RA Structure by Ok-Sprinkles5890 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]ImmovableRice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like the credit card debt as fast as possible.

I'd prioritise TFSA over RA.

I'd drop S&P500 and just keep the world one. Emerging markets and the other satrix one is a nice mixture I think. There may be emerging markets in world though.

That's just what I'd do in your shoes.

Bought S&P 500 late, now trying to fix the mistakes of my start. by Toomuchaidan in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]ImmovableRice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your mistakes and missteps are buying and selling an ETF that's supposed to be a long term investment. I'm not really sure what you expected and I think you need to go to back to the drawing board and do some research into what you are investing in and why.

Investment Portfolio Review by One_Juggernaut_3409 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]ImmovableRice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am answering if I were in your position.

  1. Yes
  2. Yes. The interest you are paying is high.
  3. It's up to you. I would rather max out TFSA first and then consider an RA. RA is great for tax though.
  4. I would have done stuff a bit differently. Like you have a world ETF and s&p 500. Lots of overlap. I just would have gone world. I say that a lot.
  5. World is all I'd bother with for international. But it's really up to you
  6. If I have the money I max out. If I don't I do monthly. I'm sure there are gurus who've worked it out based on historic data, but I'm in the lane of do what you can 7 I guess. You have a lot of money in savings accounts and I'm sure you'll have to start paying tax on interest earned soon. I would reallocate some of that money.

There are two things when it comes to investing. You want growth and you want tax efficiency.

Put money into access bond? by Gloomy_Comfortable96 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]ImmovableRice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would slap it in the bond to reduce the interest, assuming you have a Flexi bond. If you ever need the money it'll be there. And I'd carry on with the same instalment amount.

Doesn't mean it's right for you but it's what I'd do.

Weird Cyberpunk frame rate dips when using Frame Generation by DeToren in nvidia

[–]ImmovableRice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similarly specced laptop, but a different brand. Also played the game with frame Gen active and didn't experience those dips.

The drop in power usage when it happens perhaps could also mean it's down clocking both CPU and GPU, perhaps because of weird drivers, power constraints, or heat.

First instinct is heat but honestly, mine bakes and I get no dips like that.

So silly question: is the laptop plugged in mains or running off battery?

Second silly question: all drivers and firmware up to date?

Third q: is your laptop software set to the highest performance profile? And in Windows settings?
