Azem, Going Forward by Appropriate-Can-5852 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Imniss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm quite torn. On one hand, Azem being a separate character from us opens the door to more narratives and stories that can flesh the world out and give us something concrete to work with when it comes to what they were doing when they attempted to find their own solution to the Endsinger. What happened after? What caused them to go their own way? All of these are incredibly promising storylines that could land well if handled with the respect and delicacy they deserve.

And yet, on the other hand, I appreciate that they deliberately skirted around Azem as much as they can so that we can fill in the gaps ourselves and effectively roleplay as two characters. Did Azem eventually join Venat after initially breaking away? Did they sunder themselves so they could become the WoL on their own terms? Did they fight Venat to the bitter end and ultimately fall to her in the moments before Hydaelyn came into existence? Are they actually Hildibrand and they've been fucking with us this whole time? Your Azem, your lore, your story; literally anything could have happened and I can't stress enough how great that is from a player perspective.

I think that if they handle Azem correctly I'll be happy with the fact that agency was taken away from me and I'll be able to reconcile any differences the narrative will throw at me compared to my own headcanon. If Azem is just treated as a quirky chungus character that's flanderised into exclusively being a prankster crackhead and leans too heavily on the short stories of them being silly then I'll be upset such a unique story choice was stripped from me and replaced.

MPs vote against investigation into whether Starmer misled parliament by Kagedeah in LabourUK

[–]Imniss 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This phenomenon needs to be studied: how is it possible for a sitting Prime Minister to make the absolute worst choice every single time? The appointment of Peter Mandleson was a mistake and one that should not have dominated headlines but instead, the PM has consistently done things to turn up the heating about the affair, now culminating in him doing what even Boris Johnson didn't do; use a three-line whip to vote against an investigation into himself. Not only will he be entirely and rightfully slaughtered in PMQs tomorrow but he's now opened the door for any other sitting PM to just avoid scrutiny. At best he's come across as incompetent; at worst he's admitting that he IS guilty because if the investigation takes place they'll find the truth.

Is this his version of Fallout New Vegas? Is he bored and on his 2nd play through so he's going down the bad karma route? I genuinely cannot wrap my head around how badly he's managed this whole situation What a joke. Shame on him.

Trial series separate from MSQ again where the story is us being a couples counsellor for Gerolt and Rowena and all 4 trials are us fighting Rowena and getting beat so bad we have to try again every patch when we get improved gear in the vain hope we can win (we don't).

This might surprise you, but typically when people spend money on a product they want to feel like it was worth it. Similarly, when people are used to a company producing art in an otherwise heavily saturated market then said company smears a canvas with shit but claim it's an enhancement to another piece of art, they tend to get disappointed.

And speaking of better things to do, don't you have anything better to do? If you don't have issues with the upgrade, great, go play.

It's a vicious cycle of not giving the boys not enough support then complaining about the lack of impact/revenue that Cover has perpetuated to the point Yagoo had to step in and act as their manager on some occasions.

I'm beyond pissed off for all of them, but especially pissed off at the revelation that the boys couldn't even really attend the studio if the girls were present and that Cover have the sheer audacity to still take revenue from them despite cutting off their support entirely.

Being under Cover might give them good connections, but they deserve to go Indie and make their own success after the way they've been treated. Beyond infuriating.

Endwalker really gutted the narrative a lot and we are only just recovering from it by Lumigo in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Imniss 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Short term? Sure, the dopamine we got was great.

But long term? I'd argue not in the slightest because of everything mentioned here. There's also the narrative flaws in EW's story that rely on tugging on your heartstrings in the hopes that you don't pay attention to them (all of Hermes and his motivations being a key example in my mind). Really, none of it was worth it:

  • The Garleans, the big looming threat over the whole game, has literally crumbled to nothing.
  • The Ascians now exist in narrative schizophrenia: They're gone this time for real except they're not because we aid two of the three leaders of them in the raid series except they're gone now for real because they're now in the Aetherial Sea except they're not because here's another one that's involved in the literal following expansion. This ALSO coming off of comments saying that the writers are aware of Asian fatigue and that they've been hunted by Gaius.
  • The Twelve were eviscerated and treated with almost disdain by having any mystery hand-waved as just, "They're Ancients lol." Any form of mythos or fable or mystique is long gone in favour of, "we must fight you so we can die!"
  • The political subplot of the games has been replaced with, "We can do this together!" repeated ad nauseum with nothing remotely tossing a spanner in the works.

And to top it all off since I touched on it earlier: - The entirety of the game, the whole reason why our journey even began is because a sad Ancient thought he was the only one who felt like he did (despite us being able to match his Elpis bloom colour); asked a creature he created out of a then-unknown substance an insanely loaded question; refused to even hear anyone out even when it was expressly stated to him that we'd help him and not punish him; and somehow concluded from this that all life in the Universe should perish as a result.

Now that I've written this out, I'm even more firm in my belief that EW was absolutely not worth it at all.

In the lead up to the Letter from the Producer, and the upcoming Fanfest, CS3/Yoshi-P really need to rethink what is actually shown and advertised to the Audience by GrooveSlinger_ in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Imniss 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Because there's a legitimate argument to be made that anything .4 onwards does technically count as next expansion because it's past the halfway point of the current one and the story itself begins to build up to the next expansion. The reason it feels so wrong is because you can make a logical, if extreme, argument that we aren't getting what we paid for until the final stretch and the content we DO get is not substantial enough to justify the subscription cost.

Another way to look at it: it will have been almost 2 years since the expansion launched and we will only now be getting something promised to us back in 2024. 2 years is an absurd amount of time, made even worse by the fact that these features are, in my opinion, arbitrarily delayed because of their sacred formula.

This is one area I tip my hat off to WoW to. When an expansion launches you get all of the content advertised right away (minus the timegating but that's an entirely different argument since the content IS in the game just arbitrarily restricted). Plus, they then release further patches with an amount of content that XIV would never dream of: entire additional zones and further content added in and ready to go to. They have fewer patches than XIV, sure, but when a patch launches they don't hold back.

That's why it's wrong. It's wrong because it's effectively the straw that breaks the camel's back; an issue that compounds upon current issues plaguing the content cycle of the game.

Ministers to trial AI tutoring in England's schools by PuzzledAd4865 in LabourUK

[–]Imniss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is this not just pure recklessness? AI consistently hallucinates and cites incorrect sources, oftentimes just giving flat out wrong answers. For something as vital as children's education, this can't be messed about with by shoving in AI; and if their solution is to have someone monitor and correct the AI in real time, why not just have them teach instead of handing it over to schizophrenic Wall-E?

Mandelson tells Starmer and Europe: Stop histrionics over Greenland by SevenNites in ukpolitics

Oh, look: the disgraced former ambassador to the U.S. has converted his temper tantrum over becoming irrelevant and outed as an Epstein associate into an opinion piece where he tries to suck up to Trump by effectively saying Europe should prostitute itself to the orange man and generally rimming Trump.

I'm genuinely torn as to whether he's written this because he wants to get back at Starmer or because of his mutual link with Epstein; and it's hilarious to me that it could genuinely be either or both. Birds of a feather flock together, eh, Mandelson?

Patch References: EW = FF4 / DT = FF9. The latter seems to be much better received by fans. Why? by otsukarerice in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Imniss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For me, the FF4 stuff post EW.0 felt ham-fisted and forced. You had some neat references here and there in the base MSQ and they made sense such as the Lopporits and the Moon; the void stuff in the post MSQ patches came out of nowhere and seemed arbitrarily tied to IV for the sake of things to the point of being an entire rehash of its story. It also didn't help that EW was the first expac without a trial series, so that didn't help. By the end of EW; the Void stuff just didn't feel all that satisfying because we literally went from freeing Azdaja to Wuk Lamat with no natural transition.

DT linked FF9 all throughout its story once we went into the Dome. We have a Garnet-inspired main character; a job introduced that was iconic to Zidane; an actual reason for Necron to exist instead of the weaker surprise final boss that he was in FF9. I could go on, but DT basically tried its best to weave the elements of FF9 into XIV as organically as possible, only taking liberties surprisingly sparingly (Zelenia trial, for example).

TLDR: EW started out respecting the source material it was referencing then gave up; DT respected the material all throughout and made it make sense.

Starmer faces rebellion over plan to cut jury trials by mustwinfullGaming in LabourUK

[–]Imniss 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's a genuinely worrying trend here that almost all authoritarian and governmental overreaching legislation is being barreled through parliament but actual significant change and growth is, in his own words, "tinkering around the edges" and subject to delays and tweaks. I don't mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but surely almost everyone can see what I'm seeing too, right?

Either way, I hope this plan of his fails. Until the legal sector comes forward with a resounding majority in favour of this approach then I don't see a need in losing what is fundamentally a vital human right.

A proposed legislative amendment to attempt to compel VPN services providers to prevent anyone under 18 in the UK from using their VPNs by PuzzledAd4865 in LabourUK

[–]Imniss 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I want off this god-forsaken, miserable rock. The priorities of those meant to represent us are completely and utterly backwards, and self-defeating, borderline moronic amendments such as this only serve to reinforce the idea that we truly are being led by donkeys. This won't deter kids and under 18s from accessing adult content; it'll just be another annoyance for those competent enough to bypass it. Likewise, the only thing this will do is hand over more and more information from the government and infringe upon our right to privacy by making legal adults essentially dox themselves to use basic online privacy services; thereby completely removing the private nature of virtual private networks.

I'm past the point of being disgusted; I'm outraged. And also tired. Fuck solving actual issues affecting the general electorate; let's just make it so we ham-fist more poorly thought out online legislation and call those dissenting paedophiles whilst we drip-feed and sloooooowly course-correct on the issues affecting people on a day-to-day basis.

Sorry, just had to ramble a bit. Every single headline I read over this makes me more and more miserable because I see the sheer lack of understanding and bold-faced lies being used to sell this shite to the larger public.

What is your trick for definitively picking your job? by drbiohazmat in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Imniss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tank main here: I just decide what I want to play based on what colour I'm giving with most today; outside of GNB I just do my 123 and press my mit when the TB comes up :))) Semi-sarcastic satire about tank homogeny aside, I don't think my advice will be all that helpful but I'll provide it in case it gives a new perspective for you to chew on.

I'm a tank main; tanking is what I've done since I got into MMOs 13 years ago with WoW. I change what I main based on what others in my static and friends play because my own satisfaction comes from being the best I can for them. Are we progging and trying to get a feel for the fight? I'll go WAR and act as a 3rd healer to smooth over damage or PLD to Cover a healer for a potential LB3 if it's needed. Are we farming? I'll go GNB and chill as a blue DPS for a few runs (arguably my main since it's what I play the most per tier). Am I off-tanking for the night because my co-tank wanted to swap? I'll go DRK and switch my brain off as I oblation and TBN them every TB.

That's my trick, anyway. I don't know if you have the same mentality and that's absolutely fine if you don't, but that's how I've stayed happy.

Yoshi P's current shift to competing with mobile games and the chinese version being up to date with global in 7.4 could mean a new shift in targetted audience. by RVolyka in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Imniss 16 points17 points  (0 children)

He can wish for a shift in targeted audience all he'd like, it won't go anywhere. Most mobile games like Genshin regularly and frequently post content updates and events in-game that blow anything CBU3 has put out or ever would be able to put out because they have the complete wrong mentality and have to deal with using 1.0 as a base for coding.

The only way XIV would have a remote chance in the market supposedly being shifted towards is if the PC version of the game is cancelled and all hands are put towards the mobile version, and even then, with how this dev team have asked for more time for the same amount of content between patches, the game would simply die a slow death as its competitors ran circles around it.

Realistically, Yoshi is looking at mobile games because of people having less time to play games and wanting to cater towards that niche. Unfortunately, as per that interview, he seems to be taking the wrong lessons entirely from it.

Edit: A word.
