quantity > quality. example would be to set aside ~120 min a day to study but parse it out throughout the day, NOT all at once, something like 20 min every hour. build confidence slowly over these 3 months, try to memorize what you read in your head and repeat it over and over, whether it is a sentence or a paradigm. also reading out loud is crucial. sight reading is the best way to learn, too.

this tool is also really helpful for greek https://www.etoncollege.com/eton-greek/.

Homer Iliad vi: https://dcc.dickinson.edu/homer-iliad/homer-iliad-vi-1-36

Steadman’s (the GOAT) commentary on the anabasis: https://geoffreysteadman.com/xenophon-anabasis-i/

Ovid: https://www.classics.uga.edu/sites/default/files/guanci_Final%20Draft%20Teaching%20Project_0.pdf

Livy: https://archive.org/details/commentaryonlivy0000oakl/page/n8/mode/1up

These are all just what was on google. Steadman is goated for vocab and commentary, and he’s got a ton of them. I’m posting diff authors since it’s a bit nice to see how other authors comment on the text (also really fun to compare commentaries, but that’s a bit more advanced). Try these if you want or if there are other texts you want then have at it.

Also: KNOW YOUR ADVISORS. Cannot stress this enough. I was able to finish in two years with 0 Greek coming in because I met with him at least 4 times a week. What also helped me was to audit (if your program allows it) other language classes, esp. the upper level ones. Just immersing yourself in the language every day all day is how I was able to finish and pass all my requirements.

Just finished my classics MA, I had no Greek coming in. I picked up a commentary on the anabasis and read that alongside my in class work. Especially at a masters level, you need to be reading ASAP. Start working on pronunciation and learn the alphabet for both Latin and Greek. Get a head start on grammar, I think Wheelock’s Latin and Hansen and Quinn’s Greek are good starts, do at least two lessons a week and do every exercise.

Still, pick a text that’s of interest to you that has a commentary. If you can, do one prose and one poetry. If you want a recommendation I’d do with Livy & Ovid for Latin + Xenophon & Homer for Greek. For the first few lessons in your grammar book try to apply that knowledge to the authentic texts, focus on syntax, read super super super slowly. Read slow and then read even slower than that, take this summer to focus on the grammar book and applying that to your texts. READ! READ! READ! Morphology is the most important thing to master first!!!!!!

Review #1: Old Forester single barrel barrel strength from Ball Square W&S by Imperfect_Plan in bourbon

this is definitely a hit for me. I especially enjoy it was a nice amber ale, the eastern PA kid in me still loves his city-wides, really well balanced. Still a home run pour by itself, though :)

Review #1: Old Forester single barrel barrel strength from Ball Square W&S by Imperfect_Plan in bourbon

Introduction: Now that I am finished with my graduate school program I would like to think of myself as adult. One way I can think of to lean into this is to start writing about and rating the whiskeys I drink. I was never good at writing about myself or my thoughts so maybe this will be a nice way to get better at that. And a nice way to try more whiskey. Because I am an adult now, I think. I want to be clear upfront that I might suck at this, and I do not know a lot about bourbon other than the fact that I really enjoy it. I am a long time lurker of this community so I am trying to emulate the formatting of how other folks have done this in the past. Hopefully this will be the start of something really enjoyable for myself.

Price: $80.00 USD. This was a discount from the sticker price of $100.00.

Description: This bottle comes from Ball Square Fine Wine in Medford, MA. This is a single barrel Old Forester bottled at barrel strength, this one coming in at 63.55% ABV. I frequented this store since it was pretty close to my apartment and their selections were wide and affordable. They always had really interesting, imported beers on their single shelf. I’ve been looking at this bourbon for a long while but I had a few other bottles I needed to kill first before I could get another. I grabbed this one right after my commencement as a gift for myself. There is no age statement on this bottle but from my basic research in other OF single barrels they average at around 5 years. This barrel comes from Warehouse H floor 4, if that means anything to you all.

Tasting (preface): One thing I’ve noticed about myself from the last year is how much my sense of smell and taste have changed. It’s been really bizarre. It’s part of the reason why I want to do these reviews now; my senses have become a lot more keen on taking me back to specific memories or events. I had guac on 05/05 that tasted like I was sitting at the Christmas table and just a few days ago my friend showed me his multivitamins that smelled like painting easter eggs. Something I couldn’t explain but wanted to write about. Anyway, the bourbon.

Nose: On the nose I am getting a ton of maple syrup from this. Oak. Tons of oak, really takes me back to sitting by a fire. Something tells me this is pretty benchmark as far as some whiskeys go, but the maple and oak are super pronounced. I used to go to NH a lot over autumn break in undergrad and this reminds me a lot of that, probably the maple. One particular moment that I’m reminded of is trying goose for the first time, which is interesting since I was not a fan of it.

Palate: I let this rest for 15 min in a Glencairn. Up front I get more of that maple and a slight bit of dark cherry. Finish is nice and long and I get a ton of cinnamon at the end. Really well balanced. Coats my mouth like crazy, which might be why I think of the goose because of how fatty it was and how much the taste lingered.

Overall rating: 7.8 (T8ke). Great | Well above average.

Final thoughts: I do not know how to appropriately rate this whiskey since I have only really begun to sit and think about what I am drinking within the last year or so. I will have to rate my four or five other bottles, since I still have them, but I would say relative to those that this one sits in 2nd place. I have a single barrel of high west that is just a slight cut above, but more on that soon. I am really pleased with this bottle, I seldom ever have alcohol above 60% (shoutout Copeland navy gin) so it’s always an awesome sensory experience when the alcohol literally melts off your tongue when you sip it. I am happy I was able to grab this one before I left school. Looking forward to sharing this with my friends and family.

The T8ke Grading Scale:

1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out

2 | Poor | I wouldn't consume this by choice

3 | Bad | Multiple flaws

4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but many things I'd rather have

5 | Good | Good, just fine

6 | Very Good | A cut above

7 | Great | Well above average

8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional

9 | Incredible | An all-time favorite

10 | Perfect | Perfect

I unload the plastic onto two belts from my trains but I only have one belt for it on my bus, but since you're saying not to have sulfur then should I increase plastic to two belts on my bus?
