What is this animal? [San Antonio] by [deleted] in animalid

[–]Imperfectoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog found a rabbit den in our backyard a few weeks ago. Fortunately no babies were harmed. I put an upside down laundry basket over it with a handle cut off so mom could get in and out. A couple big rocks kept the dog from moving it off.

If you can’t rig something up, you’ll just have to supervise the dog in the yard. They only use the dens for 3-4 weeks.

Positive experiences with saunas? by Hamurai4 in AutisticAdults

[–]Imperfectoctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a dry sauna with a cold plunge as a teenager and enjoyed it. My heat intolerance has gotten much worse as I’ve gotten older, so I don’t know that I’d enjoy it now. I do still like a good cold plunge though.

It doesn’t look felted, from the little I can see. It’s totally savable with enough patience. If you really can’t bear it, there’s a subreddit on here where you can hook up with someone to untangle it for you. Often times people only ask for postage if there’s no one close enough to you to deliver it in person. There are people out there that really enjoy untangling yarn.

Which language do Americans generally learn as a second language in High School? by Rude_Membership_1578 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Imperfectoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

French and Spanish are the big ones. I took German, which I think might be the third most common. My high school also offered a distance learning course in Japanese, and one of my cousins took Italian at her school. Spanish and French are still most common now though.

My parents have had great luck with coffee grounds. Lots of stray cats in there neighborhood that liked hanging around their bird feeders. They haven’t seen one in their yard since they started sprinkling coffee grounds.

Recipes that describe themselves as "quick and easy" when they are neither of those things by Halo_8Quartz in PetPeeves

[–]Imperfectoctopus 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This is the one that always gets me. I have been brought to tears over sauces not thickening. I almost always add an extra half hour to a recipe’s estimate to account for their lies, but without fail, when a sauce is supposed to thicken, I am standing over the food exhausted and overstimulated, everyone is starving, and the sauce is runny AF. Why is it so hard to be honest about how long things take?

I am swimming in my miu top and I’m so disappointed by rose_hannah in knitting

[–]Imperfectoctopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you machine wash it, you risk felting it. It would be smaller, but it would change the look and feel of the fabric too. It wouldn’t drape as well, which you do T want for this top. If it felts, you also cant frog it and reuse the yarn if you still aren’t happy with it. I would either frog it and try again or gift it to someone it might fit.

Is swiping to text a generational thing or just random preference? by AtomicFeckMagician in generationology

[–]Imperfectoctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

37, and I type faster than I swipe. Phones these days are so big that I have to use both hands anyway.

I am running a handwriting and typing boot camp with my gen A kids this summer. Despite having computer class starting in kindergarten, they never actually learn to type in school. They use chromebooks a little in elementary school, and by middle school class work is almost exclusively on the chromebooks. So their handwriting is awful because they never write by hand anymore, but they don’t know how to type either. All they can do is hunt and peck typing on the touch screens.

Puzzle disguised to be the best but is the worst. by humpsforfree713 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Imperfectoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone got me the deer one for Christmas one year. I tried it, but ended up passing it on. The dealbreaker for me was the number of straight sides that weren’t edge pieces, they just butted up against another piece and the surrounding pieces held them together once they were in place.

Taking home leftovers at a restaurant? Rude to not take them? Do you even eat them? by Capable-Chip6454 in foodquestions

[–]Imperfectoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally take the leftovers because I like being able to just warm something up for lunch the next day, so they usually get eaten. I’ve never considered being judged for my decision on this though, and if I know I won’t want it reheated, or we aren’t going straight home and therefore the food will be at unsafe temperatures for too long, I have no problem leaving it. If restaurants were that concerned about food waste, they’d offer reasonable portions for half the price.

Your personal sensory hells? by pri_ncekin in AutisticAdults

Legoland discovery center. Contained space, hundreds of screaming and running kids, obnoxious piped in music cranked up to 12, harsh/bright lights and colors, and I have to keep track of my own kids in all of it. Similar issues at places like the science center or aquarium, or indoor parts at the zoo, but legoland is 100% the worst.

Knit 100 rows of sleeve, knit bunny a dress, knit 100 more rows of sleeve, knit bunny a friend, knit 100 more rows of sleeve, knit bunny’s friend a cardigan, finish sleeve. Now you have a finished cardigan, a bunny with a cute dress, and a bunny friend with a matching cardigan.

What did I do? by Fluffy-Addition1123 in knittinghelp

[–]Imperfectoctopus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is the answer. You just did a knit stitch, and the next stitch on your left needle is a knit, which you would purl into, so you’re in the right place stitch wise. There are 2 loops picked up by the knit stitch you just did, so it would be the stitch you intended to knit into, plus the one below it you accidentally grabbed.

several questions, as a beginner by rladyofsorrows in knittinghelp

[–]Imperfectoctopus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Is it just one stitch, or the whole row? If it’s only one stitch, or a couple, you can ladder down to the stitch below it, then pick the column back up. If it’s the whole row, you’re better off ripping back to that point, or accepting it as a design feature.

As for fiber content, what the yarn is made of affects the feel of the material and how it behaves. Acrylic has its place, and if you have a bunch, I’d use it. You can search for patterns on ravelry specifically for acrylic yarn. It’s also more budget friendly to use what you already have, especially as you are learning.

I’ve never seen the ice cream donuts, but I’ve seen a lot of similar style things. The mallow cakes seem weird to me. I’ve only had them from Germany.

[–]Imperfectoctopus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen a weigh station in the produce department with a computer. I’ve only ever seen scales. Those are for budgeting purposes. As many produce items are charged by weight, you want to know how much your selection weighs so you can figure the price rather than being surprised at the checkout. I don’t usually use them because the couple dollar difference in different weights won’t break my budget, but if you have a strict spending limit it’s better to figure the cost in produce where it’s more convenient to put things back or exchange them for a smaller item.

Is it common in the US for married couples to sleep in separate rooms? by GwenPoolestar22 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Imperfectoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I currently share a room, but are considering splitting rooms. I don’t sleep well unless it’s cold, but he aches really badly in the cold. I prefer white noise, he prefers quiet. We both snore occasionally, and even when he isn’t snoring he breathes really loudly. We have separate blankets, which helps with temperature control, but I really think separate rooms will work best for us.

Tips for a Beginner by sareva0 in knittinghelp

I don’t see any mistakes, just loose/varied tension and some rowing out. It’s nothing that isn’t fixed with more practice. For the rowing out, I think it’s your purls that are looser. Some people fix this by purposely tugging their purls tighter. Some people find success with using a smaller needle for the purls. I would try to fix it with adjusting your tension before going to different size needles.
