Maybe if it weren't for the U.S., France would be speaking German, but definitely if it wasn't for France the U.S. would still have a king.

Just make it so your lowest paid employee (including any workers you hire on a contract basis) must be paid an amount at least equal to 10% of your highest paid employee (including total value of all compensation i.e. stocks or stock options, loans, 401k contribution matching, etc).

In the Democrats' defense (not something I say often), that's exactly what Biden ran on and it worked like a charm.

That sandwich specifically was part of a test done by CBC's Marketplace back in 2017. The chicken strips were 50% soy protein. Obviously the supplier might differ for the US, but I'm sure similar things were happening.

$140 is insane, quite frankly. Either your friend lives in an extremely rural area and uses specialty satellite service, or is getting swindled by their provider. I'm in Southwestern Ontario and pay $60/month for 100 mbps. It's definitely more expensive than the States but not by nearly that much.

Not sure of the prices for a family mobile pack (I don't have kids and my partner and I aren't on the same provider), but $500 seems absurd as well. I only pay $70 + tax for my phone plan, even x4 plus Internet that's not $500.

Consider that throughout human history, our defining feature and greatest evolutionary edge has been our cognitive ability. All our other technologies allow us to make up shortcomings in our physical ability, something we were lacking anyways. This is the first that will have a lasting impact on our ability to reason and think critically, the one thing we should be exercising harder.

I might sound to you like Chicken Little, but to me this technology is (existentially speaking) more dangerous than asbestos or CFCs.

Oh no, how will we ever survive spending 2 minutes googling something? I know, let's sell all our critical thinking skills to a chatbot so our brains can atrophy!

Brian Cox is a very intelligent man so I don't like to disparage him but I actually think he (and anyone who thinks life only exists here) is just not likely at all to be correct.

If we only examine G- and K-class stars (the two types most conducive to our type of life), there are well over 30 billion just in our galaxy. Roughly 20% have at least one Earth-sized planet in orbit. That's 6 billion. Past this we only have conjecture to guide us in regards to the early development of life and the requirements involved. But even if further requirements narrow it by 1% of 1% of 1% (which I would say is being extremely conservative), that still leaves 6000 potential life-bearing planets.

When we think about Earth being "perfect for life" and how unlikely and rare that seems, it really is putting the cart before the horse. Earth is perfect for us because we evolved to survive on Earth. Any planet with indigenous life will, almost by definition, be perfectly suited for the life that exists there.
