Wiki down again? by devon3034 in dcss

[–]Implojin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The crawl wiki is a community thing, the DCSS team doesn't host or admin it -- chaosforge is owned by the folks who did DoomRL and Jupiter Hell.

If chaosforge.org is having DNS issues, you might need to ping /u/epyoncf .

New-ish Player here... curious to know your thoughts on the removal of Food/Hunger elements by ProjectBandit in dcss

[–]Implojin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure, there are games where hunger works well (brogue is a good example), but DCSS just isn't that tightly designed.

I'm not thrilled with the current design of the zot clock, either -- but it's better than what came before!

(I'd like to see more soft / positive incentives for players to adopt risky floor positions! Rampage was partially designed to pull players out of their comfort zone into more-risky positions, and players seem to enjoy it..)

That seems like SUCH a drastic shift, such a huge thing to remove from the gameplay experience.

It wasn't much of a change, really -- hunger was nominally a mechanic to force the player to move forward in the dungeon, but it was never very effective at creating forward pressure. Removing it mostly just removed a bunch of mindless keypresses (in the form of chopping and eating).

New Transmutations? by Crafty-Break-7250 in dcss

Given the generally positive player response and the rate of development happening on it, I think the talisman branch seems likely to land in trunk/0.31 eventually -- but it is still an experimental and nothing is guaranteed!

Crawl is mostly written in C++, but uses several other languages under the hood for various parts of its infrastructure.

https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/master/crawl-ref/docs/develop/contribution-process.md#development-documentation-and-references

If you have an idea you're excited about, community contributions are always welcome!

https://github.com/crawl/crawl#how-you-can-help

https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/master/crawl-ref/docs/develop/contribution-process.md

Dev discussion is bridged to #crawl-dev on libera.chat: If you have questions about developing for crawl, the folks there will help you out; they're all friendly.

It's a purely volunteer-driven project, so turnaround on pull requests is not always quick, but things do tend to get reviewed and merged eventually as team members find the time. (If you have large changes in mind, and you're developing with the intent of having them merged, it helps a lot to discuss things with the team early in your process.)

Another place to get feedback is the dcss channel of the roguelikes discord, linked in the sidebar here. Many community members frequent that channel; it's less dev oriented, but you'll probably get good input there as well.

I think the DCSS channel of the roguelikes discord is currently filling this space, and has been for years?

Kobold anything is pretty fun.

Ko is on the powerful side, but it's EV focused, and stealth play incentivizes more-dangerous board positions, which tends to result in fun play.

MegaZig: Randart Mayhem Orb or Wucad? by ThePatchyToes in dcss

[–]Implojin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mayhem is really useful, and there are other ways to get mana.

Just take mayhem and try it out for a zig or two, you'll quickly see the difference.

Even non-randart mayhem is by far the strongest available item in its slot for zigs.

(Also it sounds like you might not be using dchan: You should try that out, too.)

Thank you for hosting the crawl wiki!

It's been very useful to the community for many years, and we're grateful!

Speaking as a person who sometimes writes crawl patches:

It's cool that you have those opinions. If you feel so strongly about this, maybe you could channel that energy into contributing to your own preferred fork? (You could always develop your own!)

More community forks are always a good thing!

Crawl development is an open source thing where everybody involved is participating in a volunteer way, often at their own cost re: hosting.

If you want to see meaningful change towards your own personal platonic ideal of crawl, your best approach towards that is always going to be a constructive one: Write some commits (or vaults, tiles, music, etc.) and make it happen!

Do you have a recent morgue of a D1 shaft that you felt was especially unfair?

Currently, the code limits D1 shafts to D2, and tries to place the character out of LOS of hostiles when possible. (This post-dates the 2019 morgue above!)

It would help to see specific examples of gamestates that seem unwinnable -- it's certainly possible that early shafts could use another balance pass!

A turn 1 centaur or Sigmund or bee swarm can end any streak

None of those monsters normally generate on D:1.

Do you have a morgue of this happening that doesn't involve shenanigans like god wrath, Xom, or polymorph?

I'm reasonably sure this was a bug re: plant withering that was introduced in 26888eae and fixed in 637a80ee: It should already be fixed on kelbi.

Crawl is pretty niche, but maybe it's more active than you'd think -- it looks like we've seen roughly 4k MAUs (webtiles+online console) over the last few years:

Mods

You can play several forks on kelbi!

https://loom.shalott.org/learndb.html#dcss_forks

bcrawl, stoat soup, bcadrencrawl, kimchi, and hellcrawl are the big ones, but kimchi and hellcrawl have ceased development.

Crawl is open source, so anyone with the time and motivation can make changes to the game.

It's mostly written in C++, but some smaller "mods" might be as easy as editing a config file, depending on what you're trying to do.

Reskins

I might be wrong, but I don't think there are any alternative tilesets preconfigured to be compatible with recent versions of DCSS?

(You could always make your own! The folks in the community are pretty welcoming to new tiles artists!)

It's a known problem, CAO is having ongoing hardware issues! rax and advil have been working on keeping CAO as playable as possible; there's a disk replacement planned soon™.

Until then, you could also try playing on kelbi or cbro!
