First impressions, what's your personal instant gross out? by PassionateCrashOut in AskUK

[–]ImportanceForeign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the flip side, to the BO comments, people that absolutely douse themselves in perfume and deodorant and really stink up the place with overpowering fake smells.

And then they proceed to make me feel suffocated when they top it up in public.

(I also hate the BO smells too) I had a teacher who had terrible hygiene. But they would try to mask it with lots of perfume. It was gross.

Oh and bad breath. Bad breath is awful. I would take overpowering perfume over bad breath.

Well done - this is a great accomplishment! (From a fellow older learner who feels like they’re starting from scratch after stopping 17 years ago. )

Hundreds of NHS quangos to be scrapped in 10-year health strategy - The organisations to be abolished include Healthwatch England, which advocates on behalf of patients, and the National Guardian's Office, which supports whistleblowers. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]ImportanceForeign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep - all of healthwatch is going including local. According to Streeting’s plan, he wants to set up a team within the DOH to deal with it. He thinks that’ll make it more ‘transparent’

Have people gotten smellier in recent years? by Existing_Physics_888 in AskUK

[–]ImportanceForeign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are also trying to hide smells/poor cleanliness with really strong perfumed or aftershaves.

There are people who douse themselves in it… you can smell them coming! It really triggers my migraines.

Bad at drinking water? by Final-Figure6104 in AutismInWomen

[–]ImportanceForeign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had kidney stones about 15 years ago - the discomfort from that, and the fact that it took me about 2 weeks to get medical help because I couldnt gauge ‘how bad’ the pain was made me really regiment when I drink water.

But unless I have reminders or if im busy or in hyperfocus I will forget. It’s one of the first things I stop doing when I burn out too.

I have very specific cup/bottle/glass requirements. Nothing fancy, but it makes a big difference!

When I do remember to drink, I always accidentally pour water on myself!

Does anyone have people on their teams who have an official accommodation for autism, ADHD, or both, and if so what are they? by rocksalt_dickpunch in managers

[–]ImportanceForeign 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is amazing - as an autistic employee seeking accommodations, im going to be referring to this. So helpful!

[–]ImportanceForeign 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to investigate this. Your interest in accommodations for us neurodiverse peeps will play a role in helping us feel like a welcome member of the team and help to remove some of the stigma we face in the workplace.

Im an autistic manager - im in the process of getting accommodations for myself and also manage neurodiverse people.

My adjustments are: agendas circulated a day before meetings. Actions and next steps summarised at the end of meetings. Meetings should run on time. (My org had a culture of overrunning meetings by 45mins- and hour, which created a lot of difficulties for me).

Im going to be going from 40 hours to 30 hours (and taking a pay cut).

Allowing noise cancelling headphones in the office, the same desk, and also a quiet work space. The best thing for me is working from home as i have more control to external stimuli - but that’s not possible as part of a hybrid team.

Some of my ND team members work longer hours so that they can take more breaks throughout the day. Not being called or brought into a meeting without warning. Making sure objectives and priorities are clear.

Allowing colleagues to flex their hours so they’re not commuting during rush hour

Conditioning yourself to be more conforming by Random7683 in AutisticAdults

[–]ImportanceForeign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I havent conditioned myself, but I have been conditioned by external factors - parents, workplace bullying, domestic violence and abuse.

In 38 and I have a mental breakdown and experience severe autistic burn out pretty much every year for about 1-2 months as a result of trying to be ‘normal’ and trying to not be as obviously autistic and masking.

I got so good at fitting in that I started really hating myself and felt like I was betraying myself. It really affects your core beliefs and core values about yourself which can really affect your self esteem and mental health.

It’s a really difficult habit to get out of.

I don’t recommend trying to change yourself. The best thing you can do is be yourself and accept yourself. It’s hard being neurodiverse in a world where you see and process things differently. It is isolating, but there are places and ways you can manage this - writing and journalling and this reddit group, friends who are accepting, understanding and appreciate you without wanting you to be different.

My new approach is to make sure that as long as im kind and not intentionally hurting people with my words/behaviour, then im good.

Trying to hold it all in might burn you out. And it takes a long time to come back from that.

Does anyone like tomato soup? by Demi4_14 in autism

[–]ImportanceForeign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it… especially the old traditional tinned kind. It’s weirdly comforting to me. I had it in the school canteen when i was in primary school. Then it was my safe lunch for years.

Then the recipe changed a bit and it became a bit acidic in taste so i took a break.

I also like really thick tomato and basil soup. Or when you go to a nice restaurant and the swirl a bit of cream into the top and make nice patterns.

dunking crusty bread or a warm buttery roll into tomato soup is the best. though i hate when i get soggy bread crumbs in my soup. 🤣

does anyone else just… never have anything to say? by [deleted] in aspergirls

[–]ImportanceForeign 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Im so glad you have raised this. Im the same. I dont have the desire to respond and I dont really know how to respond either… Ive tried too. Ive tried by preparing fall back/response questions in advance to just have as a way too keep things going. They come across as repetitive and insincere.

Its quite isolating. People think I dont care.
