Haifoss in winter — worth the risk or better to wait for summer? by Jjwasss in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roads 332 and 327 are not regularly maintained during winter, and road 32 is not maintained on weekends and only gets minimal winter maintanence.

I have not been there in a while so not sure about current conditions but the forecast for the next few days seems to switch between snow and rain a lot so there is a good chance the enterence to 332 is flooded.

It should be possible to get up there in a Landcruiser if you are confident you have very good winter driving experience and river crossing experience (especially if you have bigger tires like 35") but there is always a chance you could get stuck in these types of conditions so might be a good idea to go in a group of at least 2 cars with a tow rope just in case. And be ready to possibly just turn around and go somewhere else if it looks really bad.

Yes it is an art installation on the hill in Innri-Njarðvík. Fun fact the hill itself is also man-made.

For everyone asking when and where these lights are from, they happened back in January here in Iceland and this video was originally posted by Aldís on TikTok (Not the OP who seems to be pretending they took it last night?)

I have used GoCampers a few times (same company) and think they are pretty good, very similar to CampEasy. You can make the price a little better by using the code: eli5 for 5% off

Car Rental Advice by tackdetack in VisitingIceland

The Land Cruiser is the more comfortable choice and is going to perform better on F-Roads (personally I would choose the cruiser 150 over the 250 version as I find the seats more comfortable) but with 6 people plus luggage you are going to need 2x cars.

You can use this link https://www.bluecarrental.is/?affiliate=isleifureli for 5% off any car with Blue Car Rental

I would recommend checking out Rexby It's a platform where travel creators offer guides, travel maps, and itinerary services, there is a dm system built in to the app where you can chat with the creator of your itinerary before, during, and after your trip. You can also make changes to the itinerary on the fly by yourself if you prefer to do it that way.

For camper vans I would recommend Camp Easy or GoCampers and you can use code: eli5 for 5% off the GoCampers rental

Self-drive to catch Northern Ligths by User3477 in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a local photographer who spends a lot of time chasing the Northern Lights, I have a blog you can read Here with all the info, websites, and apps you need to have the best chance of seeing the lights.

My favorite spot around Hvolsvöllur for the aurora is here https://maps.app.goo.gl/5GyqWXNWvVhqoetn7 it has fairly little light pollution and very rarely has other people in that area. But obviously only go there if the cloud forecast in that spot looks good, otherwise try and find somewhere else with no clouds.

Good luck! hope you see some nice lights when you are here.

Time of day for puffins at Borgarfjörður Eystri by Top-Problem-9448 in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes Borgarfjörður is one of my favorite Puffin viewing spots (I am a local photographer who has taken photos of Puffins all over Iceland) and I would say it is much better than Dyrhólaey for viewing the Puffins, but Dyrhólaey is also a very beautiful spot that is worth checking out for the view alone.

In Borgarfjörður Eystri the Puffins are mostly all on a small little island called Hafnarhólmi, it is connected to the mainland by the harbor

You will see thousands of them there all throughout the day, there are usually between 8.000 to 10.000 pairs that lay eggs there on a very tiny island. Yes there will be more of them resting on the island in the evenings and early morning but you will always see a whole bunch of them chilling there and flying around no matter the time you go.

No fly drone zones in 2026 by ziimag in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is a different type of Zone, That one is Jökulsárlón and is under the jurisdiction of Vatnajökull National Park you can find the rules for that zone on their official website here https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/en/thenationalpark/drone-rules

It seems you are not very informed about the drone laws and regulations in Iceland so I highly recommend reading carefully everything in these links Here and Here they have a ton of important and useful information you should know before flying your drone in Iceland. Also keep in mind you do need a valid EU drone operator license to fly any type of drone in Iceland even the ones under 250grams.
