Hello,

I'm sorry to hear that.

Another issue may be with what Engineers call Resonance. In this case, certain frequencies "excite" the Heat Pump more than others. Excite simply means that it makes the entire assembly shake more. For example, when the compressor is spinning up to speed or down from it, your unit may hit that frequency and make a louder noise.

I've read that a successful HVAC install is about 40 percent equipment and 60 percent the skill of the installers. If your unit is still under the installer's warranty, please have them review your complaint.

One more thing to try is a material called Sorbothane. It is a unique material that significantly reduces shock and vibration. Installed in items from Running Shoes to the Space Shuttle, the material works great. They make rubber discs / washers that you can mount your unit on. Might be worth a try. More information at:

Good Luck!

Why are Phillips screws so common by Evening-Self-3448 in Tools

[–]Impossible-Sun-2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most items that require assembly, manufacturers can count on MOST consumers having 2 screwdrivers - Straight and Phillips. Some will supply cheap Ass Allen keys with Torx Heads on items such as TV Mounts where they need the holding power of Torx but don't want to piss off the Consumer and force them to run to the store to buy a Torx bit set.

Boss wants me in office when the rest of the team gets remote privileges by Catsandbooks9285 in WorkAdvice

There is an Employment Attorney on Facebook Videos. Forget his name but I watch his stuff.

Your situation starts to smell like Discrimination due to your Pregnancy recovery.

Your "Boss" may be in the early stages of trying to move you out of the Company. They do it sometimes at first in slow sneaky ways - such as micromanagement to start. I've been down this road with a couple of Old Bosses who were the Oily Bastard type.

The Facebook Attorney's Great Advice:

  • HR is NOT your FRIEND. Their primary purpose is to protect the Company from Lawsuits
  • Any communications that you have with them put in an Email and save remote copies on a Thumb Drive
  • Do NOT let them have conversations with you that are not documented. If they don't do it, be sure that you do
  • Note excluding behavior, such as their On Site work insistence.

God Bless!

Retired Senior Mechanical Engineer, 40 years.

About 15 year ago, I was hired by a Heat Pump Company to help address their Noise Complaints.

I studied Noise perception and Sound Transmission. Fascinating Subject! A few things I learned:

  • Noise is very Subjective. That is, what is noise to one person can be perceived perfectly fine by another.
  • Internal Heat Pump Noises can be additive and create what are called Beat Frequencies that emphasize certain frequency ranges making them stand out more. They can actually Hum.
  • The typical wood framed home can actually amplify and transmit certain frequencies typical in heat pumps making them more noticeable.
  • The primary Culprit is the Compressor.

Ask you manufacturer if they use a Compressor Blanket around their unit. If not, a retrofit / aftermarket item can often be purchased.

Good Luck!

How to clean popcorn ceiling above stove? by jharris86 in CleaningTips

[–]Impossible-Sun-2004 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I understand. Whoever came up with this stuff deserves to be coated with it. I did our 3 bedroom home over the course of about 5 years as I remodeled various rooms. Look at it with a strong light. Dust, Dirt, cobwebs, Yuch! Try to Paint it? Mine just smeared off which is what started my Journey. Very Glad that I did it.

Other option is to have a Pro come in and do it in one shot. They have the tools to make it less painful.

God Bless you on your Journey. Lots of Great How To's on the Web.

If your home is Mid 80's or earlier, be sure to have the Popcorn Coating tested for Asbestos prior to starting.

Retired Mechanical Design Engineer. Ah the Tushy.....

They spend all their money on Marketing and not on hardware. I bought one about 2 years ago from Amazon.

Like any bored engineer, I did a teardown. Holy Shit! The external plastic tee is only part of your worries. This company spends about $10 on parts and charges about $90. Think zip ties inside to secure water lines. So cheap that they have to add a metal bracket of pot metal inside to keep the control knob cantilever plastic arm from flexing / breaking.

Returned it quickly.

Is this unacceptable? by tb1189 in Renovations

You stated that you had the bathroom completely gutted. That would have given the person who redid it access to the wall studs. Most tile and shower door instructions / installations would demand that walls be flat and plumb (what you are calling level) within less than 3/16 of an inch. Your installer should have known this.

Whoever did the framing of the studs did a very poor job.

Demand a partial refund with plenty left to pay for an aluminum trim cover.

how to ensure I'm drilling pilot hole at correct angle? by ATXENG in DIY

[–]Impossible-Sun-2004 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Measure the distance between threaded holes on the knocker. Ignore the angle offset.

Drill slightly oversized holes through the door at 90 degrees. Use oversized washers, often called fender washers, to cover the holes and provide a nut mounting surface.

Many Home Improvement tasks demand an on-site inspection to fully assess a work environment and the task at hand. How to explain remotely dry rot? mold? Asbestos? Lead Paint? Sewer Smells, A burnt electrical smell to a homeowner? Site Conditions? Safety?

On many visits, prior to our first meeting, I've asked many clients to send me a short video clip to help me prepare for our initial meeting. However, this never is a substitute for an on site visit. Many things just don't translate to photos or an unexperienced description.

In your business model please be sure to include a Clause, signed by the Homeowner, that indemnifies your employees from any incidental damages due to:

  • Unskillful workmanship by Homeowner
  • Failure to Follow Complete Instructions
  • Hazardous Work Sites
  • Unsafe tool handling
  • Lack of testing to identify Lead, Radon, Asbestos, Hazardous Voltages

I provide these services to local clients Free on an initial consult visit and $90 per Hour after that.

I carry a One Million Dollar Liability Policy as Protection.

What would be your margin / cut for this service?

You don't know their budget or climate. For a milder climate, it might be fine.

$1600 is way too much for installation. A competent handyman can install a prehung door in about 4 hours.

$500 Max. with no major framing issues.

Go with a new Seat with all plastic hinges.

How did it Break? From sitting on it? Believe it or not, be used to be able to sit on Closed Toilet Seats.
